Should I move to a new MLT ???

Hi, Got some cash (not much) to spend on some new brew stuff. I was thinking about moving from my rectangular cooler that always leaves a quart or so of wort in the bottom due to the placement of the factory drain. My manifold setup uses 2 45* fittings to get the bazooka screens down on the...

    pre-chill filtering ???

Hi, Folks.... I read in Papazian's or Palmer's book (I forget which), that for best results, one should remove the hot break and any hop residue (I use pellets, so there is a lot) from the hot wort before running it thru your chiller. Can anyone toss an idea my way ?? Thanks growlers full, Joe

All Grain Flavor & Alcohol content

Hi Folks, I moved to all-grain and have had 5 batches turn out ok. I am happy about that. However, I have a question. I use a SMASH recipe. 10 lbs 2 row, hops and yeast. I shoot for the lower end of the temperature range IE 150 degrees. I read that this will result in a lower alcohol...

    First All Grain...

I am attempting my first all grain this weekend. I will be following Bobby_M's two kettle tutorial. My recipe will be 11 lbs Breiss American two row pre-crushed malt for a five gallon batch. My question is: Is this all I will need to make basic beer (beside hops and yeast)? Joe

    What do I Have ???

Happy Thanksgiving to All.... I tried my first all grain Brew In A Bag today. Followed Specialkaye's method as close as I could. I don't think the thermometer supplied with MY cooker is accurate as it needs to be for this type of use. I will get a GOOD one before next brew day !!! Also, I...

    Keg Life

Hi folks, I have finally saved enough to buy an entry level single keg system. If I do, how long on average can I expect beer to last once introduced to the keg. Days, Weeks, Months ??? Joe

    Wine tastes like vinegar ?

I Made a batch of Zin Blush wine from a Spagnols kit. I brew beer, so I decided to try wine. I followed the directions to the letter.... I sterilized everything that came in contact with the wine. The wine tasted ok at bottling time although it was a little rough around the edges. That was 12...

Yet another did I ruin my Beer

I read the "Did I ruin my beer" sticky, and this one isn't covered.... I was given some hops. I do not know what type they are. I made a batch of light lager from a kit. No hops are included so I decided to try some. Not knowing any better, I grabbed 10 or 15 and coarsely ground them and...

    Freezing wine???

Hi, I am in the process of making a Spagnols red zin kit. The guy that runs the HBS in my area says to run the racked wine down to 8 degrees F for a day, thaw, then bottle. This I'm told is to clarify and remove the tannins by having them settle out during thawing..... Since this is my first...

    "Back sweetening"

With regard to The "Should I add Potassium Sorbate" Thread below, what is the best sweetener to use in a Spagnols white zin kit ? No sweetener or clue was included in the instructions. My wife's batch is ready to be processed this weekend and she'd like it just a little sweeter..... Thanks...

    Finishing in a Corny....

I used the search function but either the answer to my question was not there or I overlooked it. I can usually find the answers I need. I currently bottle 5 gallons at a time from beer kits. I LOVE the fresh taste and lack of additives in my home made beer, and at this time I am quite...

    Please Help...

Hi, folks, I was given 24 Grolsch bottles and an old John Bull kit by a neighbor that learned I was a home brewer. I can't tell the age of the can, so I said to myself wth, I'll give it a try. If it works, out of courtesy I'd give 1/2 the batch to him. That was about 4pm ET yesterday. As of...

    Newbie Qs about Wine Making

Hi, A question about wine making from someone completely ignorant of the process. I currently brew beer from canned Cooper's kits. Lazy, I know but it fits my schedule. The women in my life, wife, (can someone decode SWMBO ?) freinds wives, daughter etc. all know I brew my own beer...

    Bottles

Hi, New guy here. I am using the Cooper's starter kit. I am between batches, so I am low on bottles. May I use 1 liter soda bottles ? Seems they can handle the pressure as I've seen these things rock hard when shaken warm. Joe
