    Pests that chew hop cones

    The ones I had were Hop Loopers. I used some Bonide Garden Dust or Bonide Capt. Jack's (both are "organic"), put a Tbsp of powder in a hand spritzer with some water, and used the jet to spray the plants. Took care of the Loopers, but probably a lot of other bugs as well. This reminds me I...

    Single Infusion, Medium Body, Batch Sparge Issues

    I would definitely start looking for losses in wort along the way, then either correct for them in the water/grist or try to change the process to reclaim some of it. I only lose about 2-3% points after the mash. (unless the recipe has a lot of hops, since I use mostly whole leaf and they...

    Heatstick = awesome!

    No worries. I searched a while to find info when I was building mine.... They don't exactly advertise it as such. I have lots of experience with aquarium silicone and it peels off everything. This rtv red doesn't even scrape off with a razor.

    Heatstick = awesome!

    You are very IN-correct... Permatex red rtv is NSF/ANSI St. 51 certified. http://www.devcon.com/userfiles/file/mb-06_nsf_2011_high_rez.pdf

    Heatstick = awesome!

    I noticed that the teflon tape sorta melts after boiling. However, the rtv red gasket maker is still intact (even on the flat parts where silicone usually peels right off). I am going to take mine apart and use the gasket maker on all of the threads and on top of all the compression rings.

    Guide to Making a Frozen Yeast Bank

    Looks expensive to fix...save the $50, wait a few more weeks for the canning stuff to go on sale, then get a pressure canner. You can run pints/quarts of 1.020 and 1.040 wort for starters and dozens of vials all together in pint jars with tinfoil over the top. (The lids on the vials need to...

    Guide to Making a Frozen Yeast Bank

    You could always remove liquid from the vials and replace it with yeast slurry from the baby food jar. My vials are all about 1/4 yeast after they settle.

    GVH Drying Method

    I just harvested Centennials in the middle of last week. My Cascades are just starting to look like I should be checking them daily....still a few days out for them right now. I have to go to my sister-in-law's to check some Glaciers she has for "decoration" on a pergola....on my...

    GVH Drying Method

    What year are these plants? It takes about three seasons to really have the best production quality/quantity. Did you pick them at the peak of 'ripeness'? Home growers have the luxury of waiting an extra week before harvesting which allows for peak flavor maturation. I let mine grow until...

    Pests that chew hop cones

    It wasn't all of the cones, but I wouldn't have wanted it to be many more. It was late in the season and they only messed with Centennial, so I didn't do anything except pull the pupae/caterpillars I found and fed them to my bluegills. The half that wasn't chewed developed normally.... So...

    Pests that chew hop cones

    I had the same thing this year. They were hop loopers. Are any of them sorta filled in with webbing/cocoon and wrapped to a leaf or another cone?

    How do u clean a keggle?

    Ditto, BKF mixed with hot water....and a scotch brite green scrubby. Where chemical gloves, and don't breathe from inside the keg. From then on, I fill the keg after a brew session with water/oxyclean and run the pump to circulate it for a while while I clean other stuff. Quick scrub on the...

    Drilling in the side of mini fridge

    I traded a newer one for an older (larger) one that had coolant grate on the outside in the back and a small icebox chamber inside. I didn't hit anything when I drilled a hole for my thermistor, but maybe I got lucky.

    GVH Drying Method

    It would take a really warm and dry room, and a long time (say a week or more) to get them over-dry. I just dry them for a couple days until they are really light and call it good. I can't remember if we covered it in this thread or I read it somewhere else, but the commercial guys need to...
