    Belgian Water Adjustment

Target Beer: Belgian Golden Strong Ale Through searching, I was able to find the following recipie (from Brew Like a Monk) for Chimay water: Ca 70 Mg 7 Na 7 SO4 21 CL 21 HCO3 216 Attached, you will see my plan. It comes pretty close for most of them, but I am concerned about...

    Beer Gas (Nitro) Questions

I am (finally) getting this set up. I have the stout faucet, N2 regulator, and a keg of porter that could use a bit more mouthfeel. When talking to the local suppliers, only one will sell be a smaller than HUGE container. (I have a 40# bottle, but have to get a new hydrostatic test on it)...

    Mash Thickness & Stepping

while diving just a little deeper into my brewing knowledge, I was reading the HBT wikis on mashing. There seems to be conflicting information. I have used mashes varying from 1:1 to 1.50:1. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/wiki/index.php/Understanding_Attenuation#wort_production water to...

    Bottling for Comp

My first competition is coming up in about 3 weeks. I will be bottling an APA and a Porter, using a BM "beer gun". I have used this in the past, and tried bottles that were several months old with good retention. Anyone with experience, can I bottle this now for a 8/16 judging. Local, so...

    Tap Locks

Well, the time has come. I noticed that my last keg of Haus Ale seemed to go much quicker. I found out this morning that SWMBO's kid ( 16) , was chatting with some friends " Come on over, we'll hit Larry's beer". So, I need to secure these until I can get him away from his mom long...

Almost got a buzz this morning...

I have a modified chest freezer fermenter with 2 5 gal batches in it right now. I was in the garage, and thought I heard water running! Figured it out - it was the beer fermenting into the blowoff ! I opened the lid and the alcohol smell just about blew me away:drunk: One of the beers...

How do you get leak free ( Cooler HLT ) ?

For those who have a cooler HLT with a water heater element, how do you get "leak free" ? I've tried many different options, some with success others without. McMaster Carr Nut Bargin Fittings Nut

    Repurposing a Chest Freezer

I have a chest freezer that SWMBO has deemed unfit to be part of the household. It is functional and being used as a fermenter (with temp control), but survived a fire, so it ain't purty :) It has been granted a 4 week reprieve while I finish the work in the garage/workshop, but has to move...

    Too Chilled Brew

One of the wires to my therm on my Love controller broke sometime last evening. This apparently causes the controller to close the contacts, which brought my deep freeze fermentation chamber to a chilly 20* F this morning  I don't know what the temp of the beer is, but neither the 1/2...

    Yeast Starter Split

I have a 1L Wyeast 1056 on the stir plate now, and was thinking of adding a second brew to my weekend. Should I just make that a 2L and split it or let it settle out and split it into two vessels?

    Corrected water profile.

I think I have learned more in the past 2 weeks than I did with 2 years of chemistry! I am trying to modify my Louisville water to match the common Burton-On-Trent profile using BrewWater. We have decent water here . This is the first time that I have attempted to modify water, other than...

    False Bottom MLT

Ok, I have my snazzy new FB from Jay ( Niiiice !) and was trying to figure out how to install it in my 10gal Igloo. Yeah, I get the "Remove the top" part :) Any pics on how to connect up the FB to the valve? What about some kind of stand offs ? Larry

    Yeast Cake & Conical

This is my first brew with my MiniBrew conical, and it has finished fermenting and ready to keg. I will be following up with another batch of the same beer immediately. Here's what I *think* I need to do, assuming that everything happens the same day: Keg the beer in the ferm. Dump the...

    First wine, move to secondary

I started a Shiraz wine kit on 4/1. The directions are to wait ~ a week and rack it off. It is still quite actively fermenting (every 30 secs or so a bubble). Do I rack it off now? My intuition from beer says to let it slow down a bunch before moving it off.

    False Bottom in eKeggle

Does anyone out here have a False Bottom in their electric keggle? I was thinking that it would have to be placed just above the element and that the dip tube would be below the false bottom. This should work right?

    First Kit, Ol' Homebrewer

Ok, I have been doing beer for awhile, and wanted to try my hand at a wine kit. I read the directions with a Vinters Reserve Shiraz kit, and have a spare 6 gal carboy , and everything else but the bottles and a corker.. After the primary ferm & secondary ferm are complete, does the wine...

    Jockey Box

I am preparing to build a jockey box and had some questions for the group. I have a 40 qt cooler that has been repurposed. It will have two taps. I have a bunch of 3/16 line. I also have about 20' of 3/8 copper. I have read some articles that indicate to start with a 6' piece of 3/16...

    HERMS Temperature Measurement

I am in the process of building my Pol inspired electric heated cooler based HERMS :) I understand that the PID should use the output of the HEX to determine the heat. My questions are 1) how do you place the probe to get this ? A "T" inline with a thermocouple? 2) During the cycle...

    N2 & a Porter

I have been thinking about putting a stout faucet in my soon to be kegerator. I understand the beer gas and [most of] the pros and cons. So, if I have a keg that has been undergoing force carb ( 2 days at 30 ), what do I need to do to move this to beer gas for a nice pour?
