    Experience with half batches?

Due to issues outside my control I won't be able to do an outdoor brew for several weeks. In order to get brewing I am contemplating doing a half batch on my stove top (can't fit my regular AG boil kettle on my stovetop or I'd do the whole thing). I am contemplating cutting the recipie in half...

Want to trade smoker for brewing equipment

I have a 24" modified Horizon off-set smoker on a trailer that I would like to trade for brewing equipment. Here is a link to a video taken of the smoker hours after I bought it in 2008. I have used this smoker for competition BBQ cooking for two years. In that time I beat Myron Mixon in a...

    BJCP woes

I am in shock. I spent the last several days sending emails and making phone calls and every BJCP exam within 5 hours of me is full for 2011! Maybe I'm missing something because I'm not a part of any organized brewing club, but getting a place in an exam seems like half the challenge!! Either...

    Apologies to Revvy

I have always been suspicious of the current trend in brewing that leaving beer in a primary for extended periods will IMPROVE beer flavor because the yeast "clean up" during that time. I have said as much in several exchanges with Revvy. I have my reasons to doubt this but I have stated them...

    Blichmann burners

I have been using the standard turkey fryer burners for my AG brews. I have an opportunity to pick up some of the Blichmann burners cheap and wonder how they compare to a standard burner. My biggest hope is that they are in fact safer because they have a mechanism to hold the brew pot in place...

    big temp fluctuation

I brewed two extract kits and started fermenting in an environment that was about 68* I though I had the temp under control but I realize that somewhere about a week into things the temp in the basement fell - and my space heater which I use to keep the temps constant wasn't working properly...

    storing in a keg

I have no real desire to have more than 2 kegs flowing at any given time. But I love to brew lots of stuff. I have half a mind to buy some more korney kegs and simply store the fully fermented beer in the keg until I'm ready to drink (anywhere from 1-5 months). Then I am planning on hooking them...

    keg froze - problem?

I had a keg full of rootbeer that I made for my kids. The rootbeer never got carbonated so I decided to throw it out. Low and behold the top layer of the rootbeer was frozen so I guess that was why it never got charged. So I filled it with a hard cider and I can't get the stuff to carbonate. Not...

first time - some gaffs but fun!

I am mashing my first AG right now. I have a polarware(?) 10 gallon MLT with a false bottom. Because I lose a gallon of my mashing water due to the false bottom my LHBS told me to mash with 5.5 gals of water - though Beer Alchemy says 4.06. Through a mix-up I added 6 gallons total to my mash...

    marking brew kettles

I just bought a new 10 gal. brew kettle and another kettle to help with sparge water. I wonder how some of you mark the kettle so that you know the volumes you are dealing with? Do you etch the inside? Something inside me is recoiling at the possibility of screwing up this new piece of equipment.

Questions on the eve of my first AG

I am brewing AG for the first time tomorrow. I am a little unclear on how much water to use for: 1. Mashing 2. Sparge I am brewing Hoppiness is an IPA from Jamil's book. Says pre-boil volume is 7 gallons. However, I am unclear about how much of that should be from the first mash and how...

    storing milled grains

I was planning on brewing Jamil's APA tomorrow but something has come up and I may need to hold off until friday. I had my LHBS mill 12.75 lbs American two-row, .75 lb Munich malt. I am storing it in my brew kettle in a cabinet in my garage ~80*. Will my grains be o.k. if I store them until...

First time AG - water and aeration question

I have been using bottled water for my extract brews - knowing that the minerals from the water are left over after the water is extracted. So no worries. But now that I am doing AG - should I worry about bottled water and the lack of minerals that me be filtered out? Aeration (sp?) - I don't...

Anyone in the Quad Cities (Iowa/Illinois)?

I have been extract brewing for a year. I would love to try all-grain but wonder if someone in the QCA is willing to show me the ropes. I can pay for the grain bill and the hops - you keep the beer. :mug:

Adding sugar to primary, part 2

Didn't want to jack the other thread with a specific question - here's mine. I am brewing a stout kit from NB and my OG was crazy - 1.020. Would it be o.k. to add some more sugar (a week into ferment) to kick the gravity up to the point that the beer will be worth drinking? (who needs a 2%...

    getting wort to pitching temp

Because I have small children I have to find ways to brew with some flexibility. on my last several brews I have transferred the wort to my ale pail and added water - then I just cover the pail and leave it set for several hours while I attend to the family. By the time I come back to the beer...

    Perry Cider recipes?

I am trying a bunch of ciders trying to find a flavor profile I would like to emulate. I haven't had a lot of luck but tonight I bought - and loved - Ace Hard Perry Cider. Any idea how to emulate this wonderful drink? (I did a recipe search but I am wondering about coming close to this...

    Thoughts on Northern Brewer

I have begun buying kits from Northern Brewer. As of now I have purchased 9 kits through them. I switched to NB when the beer I was making from my LHBS tasted "off" almost every time I brewed with their ingredients. What a difference. I suspect that the quality of ingredients - and the fact that...

    Trip to Dublin

I'm heading to Dublin in August. Besides the Guiness plant what else should a beer brewer look for in Dublin?

    oxy clean question

I notice a lot of you swear by oxy clean. I have been using bleach to get the funk out of my buckets but think it's time to use something that may not have adverse effects on my brewing. The oxy clean I have found at Target is in the laundry section and has "stain remover" on its label. Is that...
