Sounds... expensive. And unpredictable. You'd probably boil away most of the alcohol. Something wonky would happen with your existing hops and the utilization of your additional hops.
These are showing up a lot of places, for a lot less than $55.

A decent Kleen Kanteen would probably work just as well, though it won't be insulated.
My barleywine picked up some great vanilla flavors from the barrel and just a hint of rum in only 7 days. Now for a nice long bulk age out of the barrel.
I used one of these to override a burned out control panel on a keg fridge, so yes it's possible. I had to wire up the fan separately though. What raouliii says, I believe, is correct.
