Comparison of mash tun insulation methods

It would be awesome to try this same experiment but with a constant mash re-circulation running as that causes temps to drop more rapidly.

    My Grainfather Mash & Boil

I did originally to measure the temp sensor resistance. I ended up cutting the sensor off wire and connecting it up to the new sensor with space connectors so I could take it apart. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PTUBH8A/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 This is the sensor I bought. It was...

    My Grainfather Mash & Boil

I did brew a nut brown ale on Sunday. The system worked great! Temps were stable throughout the mash, no stuck mash this time with the mash wand. I even had the recirculation on full volume. I hit my gravity numbers also for 75% efficiency. Here are some stats from the brew day. I started...

    My Grainfather Mash & Boil

I made a post in the wanted section of the forum and also posted my interest in the grainfather thread. My goal was to buy a used controller from someone who upgraded to the connect.

    My Grainfather Mash & Boil

Thanks for all the positive vibes! I just did a test run of the system before brew day on Sunday. Luckily no leaks! Heating up to mash temp took just 23 minutes. The pump seemed to work well and I built a mash recirculation "wand" using pex tubing and fittings with holes drilled in the...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

His massive swing was without recirculation. The 6 degree hysteresis is impossible to avoid however so even without temp overshoot, the unit still won't cycle back on until 6 degrees below your set temperate. No amount of insulation or recirculation can change the programming in the controller.

    My Grainfather Mash & Boil

Hey all, I have wanted to move to all electric brewing since I first started home brewing in October 2014 but money constraints has always kept me from making the jump. I always kept my eye on the grainfather and the unibrau systems. I was excited when the brewers edge mash and boil hit the...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

Weezy, 1. Yes I recirculate my mash through the grain bed. 2. My set temp is 150 and temp fluctuated between 144 and 150. 3. Yes this fluctuation occurs on the control readout and on my temp probe in the middle of the grain bed.

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

My problem is with the controller not holding a tight enough mash temperature. I set my strike temp to 156, it heats and gets to 156. I mash in and temp drops to my desired mash temp of 150. I set the controller to maintain a mash temp of 150 but due to the 6 degree hysteresis, the controller...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

I do constant mash recirculation and measure the middle of the mash in the basket with a fluke temperature meter and a wire probe and the top of the mash with an instant read and they were the same as the unit's temp probe. As mentioned I had no overshoot with the recirculation running. I'm just...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

Not quite that simple. I took mine out because I'm putting a used grainfather controller on it which is programmable. Used controllers from the grainfather can be found for cheap now that everyone is upgrading to the connect. I did have to rewire the heating elements though. I will have pictures...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

Well the hysteresis of 6 degrees really sucks on this unit. If I am trying to do a medium body mash at 152 degrees, the heater doesn't kick on until 146. I have a pump on mine and I don't ever overshoot my temps but with the reflectix on it, it spends more time out of my desired mash temp than...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

For informational purposes only, here is what is inside of the control unit. This board has the transformer for the logic board, the relays and collects temp probe readings. Interestingly, the unit has a relay for each of the heating elements. I believed at first that the 600 watt element...

    Grainfather!!

Has anyone opened up the connect to see what is inside? I'm interested in seeing a picture of the internals.

    Robobrew in US

I was born and grew up in the British Caribbean which used 240V 50Hz also. We used a lot of appliances from the US which was rated at 120V 60Hz but we used a step down transformer that dropped our voltage to 120V 50hz. The only issue was had was with timers and clocks. Most timers and clocks use...

    Guess on Picobrew's Kickstarter?

It's an awesome price point if you buy it at the kickstarter price. It's still going to be a $550 machine and $550 for a machine that requires you to buy rfid packs to use is still way too expensive.

Brewers Edge - Mash and Boil system $300

Okay so I think it was in here that someone was asking about a kettle screen or Dip tube etc. I brewers for the first time this weekend and I definitely won't accept almost a gallon of kettle loss due to the valve system that they chose for this electric brewery. I mentioned that I had...

This is my first time even looking at the crowd funding page for this. They seem to be way off from their original delivery dates.

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

So after two days fermenting at 66 degrees and bubbling away nicely... It had an airlock on it when this happened. Picture is after I put a blow off tube. Never had one do a delay blow out like that lol.

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

Okay so I'm adding to the very detailed brewday Vabeer posted about. I did my first brew with the mash and boil yesterday. It was a German Pilsner. Have never used rice hulls before except when making a wheat beer in my old BIAB setup and with recirculation, I too compacted the grain bed and...
