    Temperature controlled storage

Good day! I have a problem. 18-months ago I used to brew 20-30 gallons of all grain ales and mead every week. My lady and I had a huge apartment that had tons of storage. Fortunately we bought our first house, unfortunately I have absolutely no room to store my brew in. My last storage was a...

    Regulator and tap... ancient!

A friend gave me a gas regulator and an attached tap. Posted are pictures of the amazing devices. They appear quite old. Mainly I notice they don't use the same schema I'm used to, though, I'm really not used to much. The regulator is attached to the tap via a hose. Shouldn't they be two...

    Vodka soak

I'm soaking some rose pedals in vodka and water right now. Has anyone ever added flavored vodka to mead? I'm wondering if it'll hurt anything. I'm making a 5-gallong batch of rose mead. Thanks! Trails & Ales again! -Johnny

    Agave research

Has anyone ever used agave nectar for wine/mead making? I've used it for the last few years and think it is amazing! Floral agave wines make me a very happy man. I'm looking for documentation regarding the fermentation and sugar make-up of agave. Anyone seen any?! Thank you! Trails & Ales...

    Yeast strain look-up

Does anyone know where I could obtain a printable file, PDF or what not, of yeast characterisics. Something I could keep in my brewers log, to review, stare and drool over now and again. I was on Wyeasts website but all their strains have individual sites that I couldn't print very easily...

    Glacial silt brewing

Happy Spring everyone! How many minerals can yeast tolerate? I'm going to brew an ale this Summer while working on Mt. Rainier using the mountain's glacial runoff. I don't know the chemistry of the water but it's cloudy with minerals. At some points the water looks identical to skim milk...

    Fruit/vegetable sugar contents

Is there a reference out there that contains fruit and vegetable sugar percentages? I'm interested in making more non-traditional wines but don't know how much sugar is in whatever I'm harvesting at the moment. Thanks for any information! Johnny Long

    Fruit grinder

I'm planning to build a pedal powered fruit grinder and have a question with the drum. What are the preferred types of drums? I've seen screws drilled into a round piece of wood that effectively scrap the fruit to pulp. Are there other techniques? This is not a project I plan to spend...

    Force carbing bottles

I'm getting into force carb kegging. After I charge up a corney keg and let it sit for a few weeks can I bottle the beer? Or should I just bottle w/ priming sugar as I rack to the corney?

    Super low efficiency

So I put my new MLT to use! It worked very well but my efficiency sucked. I measured a gravity of 1.014 at 124 degrees... so 1.025ish. Supposed to be 1.060. 5# german munich 4# wheat 1# crystal 40 some rice hulls Mashed in ~3.1 gallons water at 155 for 5 minutes then splashed some cold...

    More MLT sparge questions

So I've built a CPVC contraption that will act as my fly sparge. I want to drill a hole in the top of my cooler and connect the 3/4" CPVC to a hose from my HLT. That way I don't have to open the lid to sparge. Very exciting stuff. My issue is sealing the cooler around the CPVC. What can I...

    Hlt > Mlt

So I have the normal, clear, easily bendable tubing from my LHBS. Can I use that to transfer my striking water to my MLT? Or do I need a special type of tubing? Thanks!

    Braided supply hose or copper

My current MLT is a small cooler using a copper drain manifold. I'm looking to upgrade but I'm not sure whether to build one with a braided stainless steel supply hose or use copper again. What are some pro's and con's of each? Thanks for the help!

    Cost of CO2 or Nitro

So I have a kegerator and I want to start kegging. After I buy a corney keg how much am I looking to invest in CO2? Also, can I buy Nitro to carbonate my beers instead of CO2? Is there a good place to buy used CO2 canisters? A place in town was selling full CO2 canisters for $200. These...

    Propane tanks in the sun

Are propane tanks dangerous when exposed to full sunlight? It's about 80 degrees and sunny here, good day to brew. Am I in any danger brewing without shade cover? Thanks for saving my life or not!

    Auto Siphon

I just bought an auto-siphon device and unfortunately it doesn't fit in my 1-gallon growlers. My LHBS doesn't supply others. Are there any online I could buy that are less girthy? Thanks!

    First Yeast Starter

I want to make a yeast starter of Red Star Montrachet dry yeast. I plan to pitch the starter into three separate gallons of cider. How many cups of juice should I add to the starter vessel? I'm planning on three cups cider, corn sugar and some yeast nutrients pitched with 1 packet...

    Dark Cherry Cider

Anyone ever made a cider with a combination of dark cherry juice and apple juice? Or just made a straight dark cherry hard cider? My co-op had some quarts of Dark Cherry juice on sale so I picked up a few.
