CFC length for 10 gallon batches

What length CFC should I use for 10 gallon batches? Is 25' good? I had been doing no-chill for over a year, then went back to chilling and remembered why I hate my plate-chiller (yes, I used hopbags and whirlpooled).

    "Buzz" in element or ssr

Just started today, but when doing my boil at 70%, I hear a buzz everytime the SSR turns the element on. Not sure where it's coming from. Element is a 4500watt from HD and the SSR is from Auber. Any ideas?

    Help choosing a SS conical

So, I'm in the market for a conical -- 2 actually. I do 10 gallon batches, but I'd probably split it between 2 conicals so I could move them from brew area to cooler. I'd also want to bottle straight from them. I don't think I could pick up a full 14 gallon conical. I'm looking at...

Calculating Lintner of a grain bill

So, if I understand correctly, a grain needs to have above 35 °Lintner to self-convert. Also, when using adjuncts, you need to raise the diastatic power of everything in the mash above this - ie, 1 pound of a 150 °Lintner 2-row plus 2 pounds of rice will have an effective diastatic power of 50...

10 gallon batches - boiling all electric

I've decided to move up to 10 gallon batches. I'm already all electric. I currently boil -- 7 gallons -- with a 4500W element that looks like this: I can get 5500W elements at local hardware store that look the same. Is 4500W good enough, or should I move up to a 5500W? According to...

    Brett Stout

I wound up with an extra vial of Brett L and wanted to try a stout. Any good recipes?

    Ghetto Converted BIAB RIMS

My rig started as a 3 tier RIMS system. I now primarily BIAB and no chill. Here's some pics from today's brew day: This is the front of the all electric system during the mash: Recirculating. I now use a steamer basket (from a turkey fryer) with a 5 gallon paint strainer bag. This is...

    Suggest some recipes

So, I'm looking for some recipe suggestions. I like almost all kinds of beer, partial to Belgian-ish beers. But, I brew and drink everything - stouts, IPA's, wheat beers, porters, ambers, etc. I buy hops and base grain in bulk. I usually buy specialty grains as needed. I still do a good...

    Steam injection boiling anyone?

I know several folks use steam for mash temperature control. Has anyone tried using steam injection for boiling? Reference : http://hbd.org/brewery/library/SteInjCS1295.html Not sure how pragmatic it would be, but when has that stopped any of us?

Quick question: use whirfloc in a lambic?

Mashing right now. A real simple all-brett "lambic." Got to thinking, I know some brewers like for the wort to have a high protein content. Isn't that what whirlfloc helps to clear? Just wondering if would make a difference if I left the whirlfloc out? I add it to all my other beers. Thanks

    Maximum Brew-in-a-bag effeciency

After seeing various discussions on BIAB, I decided to attempt to calculate the maximum efficiency possible for BIAB ( brew in a bag). I used the info I gained from http://braukaiser.com/wiki/index.php?title=Troubleshooting_Brewhouse_Efficiency I had a conversation with Kai and he said my...

Am I cursed? Dead white labs again?

So, I must be cursed. my 5th (yes 5th) apparent dead vial of white labs. Yes, all with starters. On last few I've taken gravity readings and had no change after 24 hours. With Wyeast smack packs, my starters are done after 24 hours. I've done dozens of batches with Wyeast and never had a...

    Colonna Capper/Corker

Just bottle my second batch with this capper/corker. I bought it after an article I read about corking belgians (my lambic is still aging, so I haven't tried that yet.) This is so much easier than using my old hand capper. I highly recommend it.

Using a small cooler for portable "cask" ale?

I saw these at NB: But, they are clear and wouldn't hold temperature very well. I also looked at tap-a-draft with the "insulated cover" but that's expensive. I just want a way to carry a gallon or three of beer over to friends houses for cook-outs, etc. Mostly very "middle-of-the-road"...

    Storing bulk DME

A found a few threads about storing bulk DME and most people say theirs comes in a box with a double bag inside and they just store in it. my 50# of DME came in a large bag (I'm assuming with an inner bag). Any ideas how to store? I was thinking I may could but this bag into like a storage...

    Brett only orval "clone"?

I've seen several orval clones and was just thinking how would it taste if it were all brett, no "brewers" yeast. Not really looking to clone an orval, but using the base "clone" recipe for an all brett beer. Thoughts? it tastes good in my head, but so have several other things that didn't...

    Brew in a bag rig

I think someone else was doing something similar to this, but couldn't find it in search. And yes, I realize if I went through all of this trouble I could just build a "normal" rig, but when has that stopped any of us... I was thinking of a single vessel, recirculating, all electric, brew...

    Adding dark grains to sparge

I read somewhere and I can't remember where, that some folks add there darker grains to the sparge rather than to the mash. In effect, just steeping them. (I used search here, but didn't find anything terribly useful.) Anyone do this? I have extremely soft water, but like darker beers - and...
