    First All Grain Batch

I’ve had a similar look to my blue moon clone. It was explained to me that it was break matter (aka protein). My guess, in your case, is that it’s just the protein from all that lactose. I bet it settles out.

    Grain Milling Techniques

So I have finally acquired a grain mill. I have always just spent an extra 30-40 minutes at the store grinding my grains before purchasing them while my wife and/or daughter waited on me... well I think my wife was fed up with this because this year she got me my very own mill for Christmas...

    Blue Moon Clone Experiment

Welp... I got no replies so I talked with a friend at work. He wanted to see what would happen if I steeped more orange and coriander in my priming sugar mix. So I did. We'll see...

    Blue Moon Clone Experiment

So I tried this the other day and took a gravity read. Gravity was down to 1019. It tasted ok.. Nothing like Blue Moon obviously, but drinkable. It tasted a lot like a farmhouse ale with a bit milder yeast factor, but I could definitely taste the yeast(could have still just been in...

    Blue Moon Clone Experiment

Never mind, I read a different Blue Moon CLone. This link is way more helpful! Also, I loved the ebook from John Palmer. All of these links were very insightful. Thanks! :mug:

    Blue Moon Clone Experiment

Yeah, I started reading that thread and got lazy... It's really long. And while I love how much I am learning, I am pretty disappointed in myself for not already knowing that DME would be more concentrated since I just read Joy of Home Brewing cover to cover and he goes into great detail about...

    Confession Time

Had no idea that DME was more potent than LME and tried using it as a one for one substitute in my Blue Moon Clone (I'm making it for my wife not myself). End result... My intended 1060 OG was actually 1080. Gonna be one big Blue Moon!

    Blue Moon Clone Experiment

Also, I accidentally added LME into Brew Pal instead of DME. When I change it to DME, the estimated gravity goes to 1074 which is closer than Brew Pal usually gets me.

    Blue Moon Clone Experiment

So I might know what I did. I started off brewing with LME and hated the mess, stickiness and difficulty so I switched to DME. I have always assumed that LME and DME we equal pound for pound but I am starting to doubt that now. I was just reading a dogfish clone recipe that called for 9.5 pounds...

    Blue Moon Clone Experiment

Ba-brewer, the wort was chilled and I came out to 5.25 gallons. I went over a little on purpose since it seemed like a strong recipe. Also, what is break material?

    Blue Moon Clone Experiment

They were quick oats. The coagulated stuff settled though. Also, it's fermenting like crazy! Almost had a full on blow off this morning. Went to check it and wort was bubbling out of my air lock so I changed over to my blow off tube.

Also for my flaked oats I uses regular old oat meal.

    Blue Moon Clone Experiment

So I tried out a Blue Moon clone today that I found online. They had an all grain option and an extract option which being new to the brew world I opted for extract. 1# white wheat 1# 2 row .75# flaked oats 6.6 # wheat lme 1 oz hallertau @ 60 3oz orange peels 1.5 tsp coriander Partial mash...

    Apollo Hops!

So I think that the soapy flavor is the Chloromine (or whatever that chlorine containing chemical in my water is) because it always seems to go away after time. I also used some Campden tablets on my last brew and that terrible flavor went away. As for the actual flavor of the Apollo hops...

    Confession Time

I have to admit.. It took me my first two brews to realize that 3 pounds of extract was not enough to make a real brew. I just assumed that this was an adequate amount since that's how they sold it.

Brown Sugar - Chocolate Stout Question

We're all bottled up! FG landed at 1016 so right about where I wanted it. It tasted great too. It was fairly chocolatey but not overpowering and the BP came through just enough. It tastes almost like dark chocolate. I passed on the nibs experiment. Id like to some time but I am really new at...

Brown Sugar - Chocolate Stout Question

So I'm all done for today. I ended with a nice even 1060 for my OG. I did however end up with about 6 gallons. This was my first full boil and I forgot to account for my sparge water so lesson learned there. I also had to boil for 90 minutes to try and get my volume down once I realized what I...

Brown Sugar - Chocolate Stout Question

Getting ready to start. Water is working its way up to 150- 160 range and then I'll be steeping .5 lbs of Pale Chocolate and .25 lbs of Black Patent. Then I'll be adding 6 Lbs of dark DME and 1 oz of Northern brewer. 1 oz of Fuggles at 10 minutes along with a clearing aid. We shall see...

Brown Sugar - Chocolate Stout Question

Good points. I was starting to feel defeated because my last two beers finished much weaker than I had wanted, however, swinging the pendulum too far back the other way is not ideal either. So maybe conservative is the way to go. What do we say to 6 pounds of DME, the brown sugar, and then using...

Brown Sugar - Chocolate Stout Question

So apparently I am a noob and an idiot. I don't even have Crystal 60. I have CaraAroma. So I am wondering what to make my recipe now... What do you guys think about 1 lbs Pale Chocolate 8 oz CaraAroma 4 oz Black Patent Extract: 9 lbs of Dark DME Hops: 1 oz Northern Brewer (60...
