Normal for burr formation at this time? St.Louis, MO

So both of my second year cascades are at the top of my 12' trellis and have now started throwing side arms and covering themselves in burrs. Seems like they didn't start this till a little later last year. My centennial plant is only about 8-10' tall and it has no side arms or burrs.

Cut them down to the crown today!

Went out to check on my plants today and man were they going to town! One cascade had shoots over 8" tall already and the others had shoots up to 4" long so I cut all plants down to the crown. It's been raining like cats and dogs the past couple days so they should throw new ones in the days to...

    Post-boil Ph higher than pre-boil?

So I brewed a Buffalo Sweat Clone today and mash Ph was 5.5 10min into mash and 5.4 pre-boil. I did a no sparge full volume mash. So I added 1tsp Gypsum to the kettle with hopes it would lower the Ph a little. Starting volume was 6.75gal and post boil volume was 5.5gal and Ph was 5.8. Not...

    34/70 in a Stout?

I currently have a Schwarzbier fermenting with 34/70 and my wife just bought me a Buffalo Sweat clone kit so I was thinking that when I'm ready to keg the Schwarzbier I'll brew the Buffalo Sweat and dump it on the 34/70 cake. Good idea or bad?

    Kettle Thermometer

Does anyone use kettle thermometers with out issues? I just bought a new kettle and I added on a thermometer with a 2in probe because it was basically free with the Black Friday sale. I don't want to rip my bag.

Looking @ New Kettles. Need input

Like the title says I'm looking at getting a new kettle. I'm about ready to punch the order button on a 10gal SS Brewtech @ Morebeer.com. It's $179.99 w/free shipping. I brew BIAB and would like to keep the cost under $200. I want tri-clad bottom and a kettle with a SS valve on it. No need for...

    Co2 to scrub oxygen?

I just kegged a batch of pale ale and my racking cane was giving me the fits with sucking a LOT of air an I'm sure it aerated my beer as it was going in the keg. So in a last ditch effort to save the beer I purged the headspace and then inverted the keg an attached a picnic tap and repeatedly...

What's wrong with my new growth??

Just got home from a awesome week of vacation out in Colorado to find that all of the new growth (side arms) on my Centennial plant looks off. The leaves are a bit more yellow than they look in the pictures. The two Cascades that are in the same raised bed have no discoloration similar to what...

Bad Day for Sweetwater Brewing Co

Wonder what the monetary loss is on this one? Thieves steal nearly 80,000 beers from local brewery http://www.kmov.com/story/32272875/thieves-steal-nearly-70000-beers-from-local-brewery Someone's gonna have one hell of a hangover is all I'm saying

Solstice is 4 weeks away. How much growth to expect

My tallest plant is 6' and my shortest is about 18" tall. How much growth can one expect out of first year rhizomes between now and when the Solstice arrives? As I understand it I don't want to feed any Nitrogen after the Solstice to allow the plant to flower.

    Signs of too much water

We have been having a lot of rain this past week or two and I noticed today when I checked on my hops that the upper newest leaves on all plants are turning lime green/yellow and that any new shoots have bright yellow leaves. Is this a sign of too much water? They are planted in a raised bed...

    Set temperature for beer refrigerator

I currently have my beer fridge set @35F but I find that I enjoy my beers a bit more after they have warmed up a few degrees. The problem I have is that I also store all my luquid yeast harvests in here too. How warm can I set my temp controller and not have to worry about my yeast ? Is 40F to...

    Kama Citra with Wyeast 3711???

I have a pack of 3711 and I also have a Kama Citra Kit from Northern Brewer so I'm thinking about adding some Vienna and/or wheat to it and brewing it as a Farmhouse IPA? Anyone have any experience with this or any input/opinions?

    Wee Heavy Ye Ole Bagpipes

SCOTTISH EXPORT ALE (can't edit post title) This is a beer I brewed just for St.Louis MicroFest Homebrew Competition this year. This beer scored a 44 and went on to mini-BOS. I'm very proud of this beer and all that have tried it love it! So I thought I would share it with you. The recipe...

    How to lower soil ph

I thought my hops were growing a little slow so I bought a soil test kit. Soil is a mixture of compost and top soil from bags. Not the expensive stuff. Like $2 a bag. 1cuft bag. Anywho the test for N, P, and K all came back in the Med-high range and the Ph came back high. In the 8.0 range...

    Fertilizer

Currently I'm using Alaska Fish Emulsion 5-1-1 fertilizer for my hops. I used a mix of topsoil and compost for my beds and turned some bone meal prior to planting. I'm only using 1/3 of the recommended amount of fert per gal but plan to step it up once the plants get to growing more. They're...

    Straw mulch depth?

So I have my bed ready for my rhizomes (arriving in the next day or two) and I just ran some chicken wire around it and put about 6" of straw on top of the dirt. I plan on cutting sections from a round gallon jug to put over the rhizomes to form a doughnut to keep the straw away from any growth...

    Farmhouse IPA help

I'm looking to brew a Farmhouse IPA next using wyeast 3711 for the yeast and Citra, Mosaic and Galaxy for the hops. This will be a 5gal batch and I plan on purchasing 4oz of each hop. What I don't have is a good idea of what to do for a base on this beer. I'm thinking: Pilsner 75% Vienna 10%...
