Just bottled my first brew! (hints and tips)

I just bottled up my first batch...only issue was the racking cane and getting the siphon started and I'm not really too into my springless bottling wand. I set out to make a 5 gallon(40 pint) batch of a wheat beer. I used John Bull hopped wheat extract and some unhopped malt extract and Danstar...

Just bottled my first brew! (hints and tips)

I saw MANY plastic tray liners(usually just a biohazard bag laid on the tray under the tools) that had been put through the autoclaves and sent back to us. Those got instantly trashed. I got to work with the equipment in the our microbiology labs and WOW, big difference in quality. Ours blew...

Just bottled my first brew! (hints and tips)

I've had some education on the sterlizer/sanitizer topic at a previous job. I ran 3 different autoclaves and none of them were "sterilizers". This was for surgical instruments(the hospitals did use an actual sterilizers(most of the time) but yeah...many autoclaves are only really killing some of...

    Tasted my first homebrew

I've got my first brew still in the primary(been in since thursday of last week) and I'm already planning on a stout, an IPA, and a amber cerveza. I'm thinking about using the tax stimulus check to pick up a better bottle with the spigot, an auto siphon, and check lowe's for a quality plastic...

    quick question

yeah I know that...my question on that was the fact that he said it might be nearly done after 3 days. I was intending on giving it 2 weeks in the primary to just let it chill and do its thing. no reason to rush if it'll come out better given a bit more time. moving it to the garage brought it...

    quick question

shouldn't it have taken a little longer to be close to being complete being on the lower end of the temp range? I know you can't go 100% by the book as far as time is concerned with things like this but everything I've read has suggested 9-14 days for fermentation of a wheat. I will have to give...

    quick question

I've had my first batch in the primary for about 3 days and after 8 hours it had quite a bit of airlock activity. I made a John Bull pre-hopped wheat/John Bull wheat syrup batch with a Windsor yeast. I believe the yeast's temp range was 64-73-ish and the activity was taking place when the...

    Fermentation Bucket Odor

The water/bleach solution is what I was going to suggest. If that doesn't work, you can find ale pails and better bottles pretty cheap online.

    getting ready for 1st brew

Yeah, I was going to add 4-4 1/2 oz to the bottling bucket prior to bottling. Got everything in sanitization right now.

    getting ready for 1st brew

primary for 3 weeks...not days. yeah, I have a hydrometer, thermometer, auto siphon...I'm set on equipment...for now(hope to keg once I get into it a bit more) I wasn't going to use all of the corn sugar...I believe it is calling for around 4 oz.(my dad use to brew Mr. Beer...he had a 7.5...

    getting ready for 1st brew

I've got my ale pails and ingredients lined up. I've got a pre-hopped John Bull wheat beer kit 1.8kg and the no hop John Bull wheat syrup 1.6kg. I've got an approximate 1lb of corn sugar and the yeast I'm going to use is Windsor yeast. I've started the sanitization process and I've taken some...

    new from Indiana

Thanks for the welcomes. I will also be checking out the store in Elkhart since it is a bit closer and it also gives another reason to head to midwest gun range for some full auto action. Yeah, Francie is a pretty cool chick. I was in there for my John Bull pre-hopped wheat and other stuff...

    new from Indiana

I'm from the Plymouth area and I've spent some time in Warsaw. I'm getting ready to start my first batch of beer. I've got a wheat beer planned. For those that are from or familiar with Fort Wayne, I picked up some supplies at Brewer's Art Supply. I had an old Mr. Beer(7.5 gallon) that decided...

    equipment question

I had an old Mr. Beer 7.5 gallon fermentor but I guess that it was getting a bit too old. The fermentor got bumped over and it looked like the airlock must've taken a hit. The lid and the airlock broke. I'm wondering what would be better to pick up from one of the LHBS shops...

    John Bull Blueberry Wheat

yeah, the one can is pre-hopped. picked the stuff up at a LHMS and asked twice to make sure it was everything I needed but I'd rather ask again and make sure 100%.

    John Bull Blueberry Wheat

I picked up a can of the John Bull Wheat and the John Bull Wheat Syrup. I also picked up sanitizers and my corn sugar(approximate 1lb). Also some Windsor's Brewers Yeast. I picked up a bottle of blueberry extract and I'm planning on adding that to the last half of the batch before bottling. Also...

Seal/Label Generator - An Easy Way to Make Labels

Don't know what kinds of music you guys are into but the Dropkick Murphys are one of my favorite bands. Kind of where I pulled some of the inspiration for these labels. They're an Irish punk band that is big on the working class and beer/whisky/having a good time.(only thing I'm not real sure of...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

How long are they usually good for? I want to say its been a good 2 years since he messed with any homebrew. Might just keep the boosters and throw them in for some cider. I think the Coopers might be the way to go(if I can come up with some sort of recipes). I'm also looking at some stuff on...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

I've got a 6 gallon Mr. Beer kit and a Whispering Wheat Weizenbier and Octoberfest Vienna Lager(boosters with both). I found this stuff while helping clear out my parents basement and my dad doesn't use it anymore. The cans I've got are for the 2 gallon kit. I'm not really sure if I should pick...
