    Double-thermoelectric ferm chamber

After ordering and before receiveing my cooler I googled for days on topics like efficiency, insulation, thermal leakage, etc. I am an IT engineer, so physics topics may get over my head. But I did the math using suggestions from smarter people and I got nothing useful out of it in the end. But...

    Double-thermoelectric ferm chamber

If I was to upgrade my current air-cooling situation I would probably use something like that. The chinese one with my kit is rather sucky, but it works. So anything with a bit more quality is probaby an upgrade.

These are done using two 5 Amp peltiers.

    Double-thermoelectric ferm chamber

I have now used this for three fermentations. Empirical data for me is as follows: With my specific container, 2*5A(12V) peltiers, and about 20L(5.5 gallons) of wort. During high krausen (most heat generated) I can keep the wort ~3C(~5F) below ambient. During this the cooler is on for almost...

    Double-thermoelectric ferm chamber

I got my own results verified by a third party. The box lets in about 0.16Watts by conduction. By glancing around HBT/web it seems that it would basically be a miracle if the yeast would produce anything close to or over a single Watt at their peak. 1.005 is heat capacity of air around...

Most annoying response when you tell someone you're a homebrewer?

Here in Estonia we have something called "homebeer" (translation for homebrew). It is an ancient/local kind of beer what peasants and old people have made for centuries. Most of the components are non-specific(eg. bakers yeast, homecooked malt) and it is usually fermented without an airlock(air...

    Double-thermoelectric ferm chamber

Thanks. I am also finishing up my wort-chiller, so I can chill the wort to the correct temperature to begin with, so the peltiers wouldn't have a hard time in the beginning. They should be able to deal with fermentation waste heat easily.

    Double-thermoelectric ferm chamber

In Estonia the tempereatures are rarely suitable for fermentation. In summer it is usually to hot and in winter times the heating systems cause it to be too hot. So I decided to build my own fermentation chamber. I read many threads and articles and blog posts about them, and I decided I was...

    Post your infection

Seems to be Brett on a Imperial IPA. Not worried though, it will probably turn out great.

    Pellicle Photo Collection

Cute, but not really suitable for an Imperial IPA.

    Is this Brett?

Hello, This is my tenth (AG) brew. It's an Imperial IPA with a nice 8.4ABV/71 IBU. For some reason it came much higher OG(82 VS 70) and a bit lower FG(17 VS 20) than expected. I have had similar infections like this a couple of times(probably my plastic fermenter or just bad luck), but this...

    messed up my beer tonight

With one of those rolled-metal-measuring tapes(don't know how it is in English). I put one end in the pot and read the cm/mm from there. After that I do the calculations. A millimeter here or there is about 0.5 liters. I used a measuring stick for a short-while, but it was really hard to get...

    Hydrometer sample fermented?

To illustrate the point even further, I have left my spent-grain bag open a couple of times. One bag sat for two days and it was clearly fermenting. The bag was much warmer than the environment and it smelled like it was fermenting too. Luckily my beer was also fermenting nicely :)

    messed up my beer tonight

I measured my boiling-rig by pouring 5Liters of water (4 times) and every time I measured how high the water was in centimeters. For example I got a consistent result that 20Liters equals 16.4cm. So now I measure my wort height and calculate the amount by (20/16.4 * wortHeight = X liters). This...
