    Poetry that includes beer

My wife is gone, my girl is gone, my books are loaned, my clothes are worn, I gave away a car; and all that happened years ago. Mind & matter, love & space are frail as foam on beer. —Gary Snyder Please add some more…. :mug:

    Another LHBS gone

High gravity brewing in Tulsa is closed for good. In addition to supplies, they also had a small brewery and a winery and they produced The Wort Hog electric brewing systems. Just another example that the homebrewing hobby is still shrinking I suppose. :tank:

    $12 dry yeast for beer?

Just noticed in my email, N. Brewer now has White Labs dry Cal Ale yeast, but it’s $12. If you were in sales, what would you say to a brewer to persuade them to spend more for this yeast compared to all the other dry yeast choices out there. I used to use all WL liquid yeast, but the cost has...

    RIP Ashmead

When I first got into cider making, I hunted down all the orchards within a half days drive, looking for heirloom varieties that would make a hard cider better than the usual eating apples everyone grows. Then, close to home, a very large orchard started selling Ashmead’s Kernal Apples. I used...

    Hacking Picobrew appliances

From time to time I see old Picobrew appliances for sale cheap. There are online resources about setting up your own server using a rasberryPi device and writing some code, but I'm thinking of going more low rent and just installing electrical switches to turn it into a manually operated...

Great cider for blending with Bud Light

ABInbev was offering $15 rebates, so I took 'em up on it and ended up with two 18 packs for $3.50 after rebate. Bud Light is kinda tasteless but I've found some great ciders that should blend with the Bud very nicely...

Anything new re: Invert vs not inverted sugar use?

So after many years away, I returned to the Homebrew network podcasts and found Jamil is still there and on a recent podcast he was discussing Gale's Prize Old Ale. Invert #1 or #3 is used, and I decided to hunt around and find if there was anything new about using invert sugar vs/other...

    Cost of Drinking Conundrum

Since COVID, I've been swamped with work and my brewing time has been reduced but I have more money to spend. I've also been trying to cut back on drinking and carbs for health reasons, so a few weeks ago, I bought a 24 pack of 16oz Miller lite and was some what shocked at the $33 out the door...

    Using Black walnuts/Nocino

So every year I have to clean up masses of black walnuts in my yard, and I've always wondered what they could be used for. Years ago I tried eating some and the walnut meat is very difficult to get out and is very bitter. So then I came across a beverage called Nocino and am including the link...

    Let's brew the Queen's beer!

The Queen had passed to a better place, but we're stuck here, so perhaps we should brew the Queen's Best Bitter and IPA and enjoy life while we can! The two beers were brewed under contract at local commercial brewery and sold in the gift shop of one of the Royal estates. The best bitter is 4.3%...

No boil Brew in a Keg-20 min. brewday

I'm super busy in the summertime and have little time or energy for a full brewday, and sometimes turn to extract to get a fresh beer done. So here comes Dr. Hans with a brew in a keg extract method: I guess you could call it BIAK..... -Add DME to (sanitized) keg -Add boiling water put lid on...

Never thought about "creator" of light beer

Turns out the creator didn't even drink beer. Interesting read; for homebrewers trying to cut some calories, using enzymes is a technique taken for granted, but the process apparently didn't exist until the 1960's: Joseph Owades created light beer, forever changing the way America drinks

    Chicken flavored Beer

Having morning coffee and surfing the internet, I came across this: 15. Cock ale Peter Isotalo We’ve already introduced you to the delights of stuffed sheep’s penis, but cock ale is not another genitalia-based dish. In fact, as the name suggests, it’s a drink. Basically, take some standard...

    Beach Body Beers

Since Thanksgiving I've splurged, eating junk, drinking high calorie/high ABV beers and not getting very much exercise. First day of spring is today, so its time to cut back. I've brewed some low-cal/low-carb/low ABV beers before, but most I didn't really like that much. I know, if I want...

    AHA 2022 in Pittsburgh

Its driving distance for me this year, but with the registration fee, hotel, parking, food, its likely going to be at least $1000 or more if I stay for 2 nights. I've never been and I'll probably never go, the cost/benefit just doesn't add up for me. I suppose if there was an active local...

    Letting Wort settle before Boiling

So yesterday I started a brew and I knew in advance I wouldn't have time to finish. I'm doing a 3 gallon BIAB all grain dark mild with 25% oat malt. I mashed with 2 gallons, did a 1 gallon cold water dunk sparge, let in cool in the snow and 20F outside temp then poured it into a carboy to keep...
