Texas WTS - Keezer and Grainfather (North Dallas)

ALL SOLD thanks! Needing to move across country, so selling off most of my big items makes sense for me. I'm located in Little Elm, just west of Frisco. Asking $SOLD for Grainfather (120V) which includes everything it came with (no jacket). It's only been used for about 5 brews, which went...

    Grainfather!!

So I did another batch last night, turned out well, the mash temp was held better (kicks on after only 1 degree drop in temp as expected), but with the mash element on, it continues to fall after that for another 2 degrees before stabilizing. I had to toggle the large element a few times...

    Grainfather!!

Most people may know, but in my attempt to get a bit better temp control I ran across this document to change the hysteresis: http://media.wix.com/ugd/e8b8c7_0c7caceab63b48ffa6317ba31ae2d1db.pdf I had been thinking about changing over to Celsius to see if it was more accurate. But 0.5C...

    Grainfather!!

Same for me, I was hoping for better accuracy, I'll probably mod mine with an Arduino at some point as it's hard to beat the cost. Haven't tried sorry, thinking about it could you just tilt the grain container lifting up only one side and keeping 2 feet on the mounts? Should help with spilling...

    Grainfather!!

I pump, once full I seal it up, tip it to sanitize the top of the keg with hot wort (similar to no-chill cubes). Then I put it on CO2 and purge like a normal keg to get rid of the air. I don't know if it affects the process after that. I think normal no-chill plastic cubes they squeeze out...

    Grainfather!!

I just got my Grainfather and did a brew yesterday. Overall it went well, though left me fairly tired as I brewed on my countertop instead of the floor to keep my curious 2 yo daughter from it and having to police that all day. I needed a step stool, and really the worst time was sparging using...

Andre's Original Secret Rootbeer (from scratch) - No Kegging or Yeast Required

Sorry I haven't seen the updates here. Birch oil is hard to find, the source I have closed down, and I still have a big bottle left! You can substitute wintergreen oil as I think chemically they are about 99% the same. The same active ingredient is in both. Gum arabic is pretty easy to...

Stainless 1/4'' MFL pin lock disconnects?

Looks perfect, where did you find it for sale? I need one of these as well for transferring hot wort. Ball lock looks easy to find as you noted, and while I can find one with a barb inlet for about $50, hoping to get MFL so I can transfer to ball lock or pin lock as I need. Thanks!

Andre's Original Secret Rootbeer (from scratch) - No Kegging or Yeast Required

The recipe when I make it doesn't have a strong clove or cinnamon flavor, but it's there. Overwhelmingly wintergreen is the main component. I've changed out brands and types over the years...it doesn't seem to make a difference, but I always get 100% natural essential oils from reputable places...

Andre's Original Secret Rootbeer (from scratch) - No Kegging or Yeast Required

Yeah I see what you mean, although I suppose the perceived flavor is probably very dependant on the type, efficiency and amount of emulsifier you have. My source of gum arabic or perhaps in general could be that a higher strength is needed to have a similar perceived flavor. Certainly from a...

Andre's Original Secret Rootbeer (from scratch) - No Kegging or Yeast Required

Well let's see...first of all, I don't want this to come across as harsh, the internet doesn't do a good job of reflecting tone, so my intention with my response is to inform others as best as I can, and show where I came up with my amounts (other than adjusted to taste). And not to show that...

Andre's Original Secret Rootbeer (from scratch) - No Kegging or Yeast Required

Most of the cost here is initial in the oils. To get started with this number it is around $100 from what I last remember. Per batch cost, the highest is the sugar, oils per batch along with the gum arabic are probably in the neighborhood of about $1 or so. I've now switched to Sucanat...

    Root beer from scratch

Have you guys seen my recipe? Not exactly positive what you call "from scratch" but my experience with herbal only root beers is that they lack a bit of flavor, no matter how much you use. I believe boiling only gets out a certain amount of the goodies before the oils are volatilized and gone...

    Metabisulfite in Soda?

I'd skip the carboy and hot fill your keg. This way if you heat it hot enough, you can reasonably be sure that no bacteria or wild yeast is living inside. Just turn it upside down for a few minutes after filling and sealing. After that I give it a good ~35psi shot of CO2 and purge. But...

Leaking Carbonator Cap - Better Alternatives?

if the rubber O-ring that's given with the carbonator cap isn't holding pressure, usually a bit of keg lube will do the job (I believe it's just DOW food grade grease) alternatively the O-ring may need to be replaced if not, or maybe the ball lock connector is dirty inside and can't seal well?

    Essential/Volatile Oils in Soda?

Yeah too bad about the ginger oil. I think some plants oil distillation is a lot easier. Fresh ginger isn't so consistent, but I think it tastes good! Good luck on the other oils

Leaking Carbonator Cap - Better Alternatives?

I've noticed that better quality bottles like the plastic green Perrier bottles stand up much longer than the cheap 2L. But I think you have to remember, they are still made for single use. Something really thick like what they use for the sodastream is probably required for continual use. For...

Leaking Carbonator Cap - Better Alternatives?

I've never used it, but I've seen it around: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008071H8O/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 I would guess that you could probably put a flat rubber seal inside one like this that you could replace often if needed. It may come with one already, I'm not sure. I have noticed...

    Essential/Volatile Oils in Soda?

Have you tried to use a needle to get at the solution below the gum? My guess is that with a small drill bit or small needle, you could probably get it out without resorting to smashing the bottles. Just dissolve it in your emulsifier of choice afterwards as most of the gum will have settled...

Made a mistake - can I brew with un-millled grains

I ordered a 50lb bag that came not crushed...prompted me to buy a $30 corona mill. About 25lbs later my arm started to dread the work, so I motorized it. All it takes is the right size bolt and correct socket on the drill. I generally get about 75% efficiency with my system using this mill.
