    Lager Fermentation Question

I'm fermenting a lager for the second time, and have jus finished my diacetyl rest. Is there any harm in the beer sitting at 63 degrees for a week before i rack and begin lagering?

    Hop Bits in Draft Beer!

I cleaned the keg with PBW and flushed it with clean water before filling it. What could it be if not hops? I know the PBW, water rinse and sanitizer did not stir it up, so I can only assume its something in the beer I just racked. I may just try gelatin and see if that works, even if I end...

    Hop Bits in Draft Beer!

At first, the dip tube had some of the bits in it. They are green, leafy things (hence assumed hops.) After I blew the tube out with CO2 and tried using the hop bag to "filter", I'm still getting some of these floating leaves in the glass. It didn't seem like there was a lot of them coming out...

    Hop Bits in Draft Beer!

In several of the beers I've kegged, I've ended up with small floating hop bits/leaves in the glass. I know I suck up some from the kettle when transferring into the fermenter, but it seems like they never settle out or get left behind. Does anyone else have this problem?? I tried cold...

    Pilsner Urquell Homebrew Contest

Mischief: I see your in Sayreville, do you know where your water comes from and the stats? I'm in South Jersey, and my water comes from the Potomac Raritan Aquifer and is really soft and close to pilsen water profile. I just brewed a czech pilsner that came out very well, and I'm looking at this...

    Pilsner Urquell Homebrew Contest

Did anyone hear about this? http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/pilsner-urquell-unveils-master-home-brewer-competition-119402589.html After having brewed my first lager, this sounds like an interesting challenge. Its gotta be tough to judge 50 czech pilsners side by side and come up...

Wyeast 1968 Fermentation Measured with Refractometer

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the spreadsheet I'm using is from morebeer.com, and does this conversion. So, to keep the units the same, I started at 12 Plato OG, and am now reading 5.7. Using the spreadsheet to correct that number, gives me a SG of 2.1 Plato. This afternoon I'll probably take...

Wyeast 1968 Fermentation Measured with Refractometer

This is the second brew I've done with my new refractometer. The OG measured 12 Plato ( or Brix?), for a OG of 1.048 according to the refractbeer spreadsheet. I checked again after 1 day, and got 1.030, again according to the spreadsheet. Today, the third day after fermentation began, I measured...

    Wilamette Single Hop Late Additions

I'm planning a series of single hop pale ales, because I have a ton of hops from the Midwest Supply sale. The first one, because the pack is open, is Willamette. What do you guys think about this recipe? I'm also trying larger late additions, hoping to really get the flavor and aroma from the...

    Yeast Starter for Multiple Brews

Thanks Kammle, that sounds like the simplest way to do it. All 3 batches will be very similar gravity, so I don't think it matters.

    Yeast Starter for Multiple Brews

Thanks for the replies. I'm planning to brew the 3 batches over the course of the week, Tues, Weds and Fri. Can I make the 3L starter, and pitch 1/3 of it into the first batch, and then just re-cover it and let it keep going until the next day? And do the same thing for the final batch? Or...

    Yeast Starter for Multiple Brews

I've never made a yeast starter before, having brewed only ales with pretty moderate gravity. However, this week I'm planning on brewing 2-3 batches. I'm doing pale ales with different hop additions, so the yeast can be the same across the board. My plan is to make a starter now, and use...

    Kold Draft Kegerator??

This is my first post, but I've been lurking the forum for a while getting ready to set up my kegging system. In the process of looking for a fridge/freezer to convert, a relative gave me this used keg/tap box. Not really sure where it came from. The brand is Kold Draft, which seems to be a...

Odd Flavor in India Pale ale

This is my first brew, so I'm having trouble identifying this flavor. Its not unpleasant, but very strong and somewhat sweet. It's a high grav India Pale Ale, with simcoe hops for the boil and whole cascades for dry hopping. I also noticed the taste much more subtely in Simcoe IPA by...

    First Time IPA

I'm brewing an extract IPA. I had some krausen coming through the hydrolock for the first 48 hrs, but it has trailed off and mellowed out. Today, I opened the primary to add some Cascades for dry hopping. I noticed that there is a pretty large amount of solid crap floating right on top. It...
