    mold part deux

yeah its the american pale ale. it tasted alright when i tried siphoning off the mold. if i wasnt so sleepy, i'd rephrase that so it didnt sound like i tried the mold. anyway, it was a little vinegary tasting, not a lot, but certainly a little more tart than my first ever brew (not a lot to...

    mold part deux

ok, i posted a few days back on a small mold contamination I got in my secondary. a small white patch (3 cm across). I tried siphoning it off (skimming the film off is impossible as it's in my glass carboy) and thought I'd succeeded. apparently I succeeded in spreading the mold to other surface...

making a starter from a commercial beer

hey guys so I last night attempted to make a starter yeast culture from a bottle of Chimay (Blue). All I did was miz 1/2 cup DME with 2 cups water, boiled it for 10mins, let it cool to 70F and poured it straight in the recently opened and almost completely finished bottle of Chimay (thinking...

    Conical Fermenter Questions

you might want to try duct-taping the saran wrap down too - it tends to lift off with a little gas pressure.....

    Time after bottling

yeah right. I couldnt wait longer than 1 week before sampling my first batch and have just tried the second bottle of it now, 9 days after bottling. It poured a nice thick head (which retained!) and was slightly more carbonated. It might need longer than the 2 weeks though as it started with an...

    mold :(

this coming from Mr Piddle beer himself :) glad yours turned out ok in the end! the official opening of my first ever batch is next week saturday. stupidly I have invited some friends around, it'll probably taste like soap or something worse, like nats piddle.

    labels

hey lads so I have made some extremely cool labels for my beers. ok, so they are crappy, but they are labels. any advice on how to put them on the bottles? do you just print them out on label paper and stick em on?

    mold :(

i agree that it was likely the oak chips and the answer to the steaming question is no, I stupidly didnt. They came in an airtight bag which I assumed meant they were sterile. I emailed the store I got them from and they said that even though they arent sterile, they are usually fine to use...

    mold :(

hahaha, mate if I took a piss in the secondary it'd still taste better than bud. thanks for the sucking off idea (maybe I should rephrase that?), I'll give that a go and see how it tastes (I'm going to stop now before I get in trouble). cheers....

    mold :(

evening lads and ladies so my first batch went beautifully - one more week in the bottles and it'll be ready. I tried a pint of it whilst bottling and fell in love with my own beer :) it went so smoothly, something was bound to go wrong in the second batch. I'd brewed and primary fermented...

    Bubbling?

told you so :) my first batch was the same - that little bit of extra aeration by swirling made all the difference. mine was not doing anything for the first 48hrs, then I got some advice on here to swirl it, i did, took a nap and when I woke up it was bubbling away with no stopping it! it...

    Bubbling?

I had the same problem recently - my first ever batch as well. It didnt start until after 48hrs! All it actually took to get it going was giving the primary a good swirl to fully oxygenate the wort. give that a try, I bet you it'll be bubbling in under 6 hrs time.
