    Copper Hops Tags

I made up some neat, relatively permanent copper tags for my hops using copper sheeting I bought from a local metal supply. The copper cost me $8.40, but the sheet's original purpose was to space the coils of my immersion chiller (this is what I did with the scrap). I got this idea from...

Another HERMS Designed on the Clock

Harley03 and I were spurred into discussion by blackheart's thread. We thought we could develop a design that used fewer valves. I sketched something up and after going back and forth several times and getting additional input from PunchDrunk we managed to trim two valves (which I proceeded to...

    Businessbrewers Lend Me Your Consciences

I've never been good with personal ethical decisions, so here goes: About 8 months ago my hiring manager made a deal with my current manager to take an additional headcount reduction (to cut loose a low performer) with the caviat that I would be transferred after 6 months. My current position...

    Water Profile Testing (Well)

Has anyone on a well had their water tested? I looked at the water quality report for my township, figuring it would be close enough, but they listed HUGE ranges and didn't distinguish between the qualities of the different municipal wells (there is one rather close to my house). Any ideas...

    Are YOU feeling the hops?

NO I'M NOT FEELING THE DAMN HOPS, INBEV! The latest Budweiser commercial shows two "wine connoisseurs" choosing Bud over wine and asking each other if they are "feeling the hops." You can't feel the hops, you can't smell the hops, you can't taste the hops. IT'S AN AMERICAN LAGER! This...

    GearBeer's Overengineered Hop Trellis

With my hops coming along in the basement I started the construction on my trellis this weekend. I started by laying out the basic shape with 8' landscaping timbers. I staked out two isosceles triangles to ensure even loading on the guy wires before digging the base holes. 48" deep...

Why do general contractors suck so badly?

So, after *checks calendar* 5 months of stop and go progress on the two garages (one attached and one detached) I'm having built I got a visit from the siding subcontractor today. Apparently the general contractor has not payed him for my job or, at least, 3 other jobs. (The same goes for the...

    Car Cover Holiday Ale

Here is my initial production of my spiced holiday ale label. I threw this together in about 5 minutes on Sunday morning because I needed it for an early family Christmas. My own initial critiques: Font Sucks Can't see the car, and not just because of the cover Gearhead dude is fuzzy...

    Gearhead Brewery Logo

Here is the first iteration of my brewery logo. It's a little rough and some of the letters don't line up, but it reflects my idea pretty well. It's much cleaner when shrunk to avatar size. Thoughts: I'm not a fan of the font. I just used the PowerPoint default. I'd like to hear some...

    AHHHH! What is it?!?!

This is growing from Willamette #2, it doesn't look like its sister. Any ideas? Willamette #1

    Dead Sprouts

I bought 4 Willamette rhzomes off eBay about 2 weeks ago. When they arrived 3 of them had 1-3 inch white sprouts on them. I planted 3 of them in my yard a week ago and left one in the fridge for my coworker who is currently on vacation. I received 2 more (Kent Golding and Brewer's Gold) in the...

    Research/Industrial Style CFC

This project was inspired by Bobby_M's Counterflow Chiller Tutorial. Bobby's design is an example of a shell and tube heat exchanger. My main problem with the design is that the shell and tube (hose and refrigeration copper) are both pliable and, thus, subject to the effects of gravity. The...

    Trellis Orientation

How do you folks orient your trel... (trellises? trellisi?)? I've got a pretty open back yard so I could do either. I'm assuming it would be best to take advantage of the southern exposure.

    Can You Start Hops Late

I missed the planting window this year and was going to leave it till next year but I was chatting with my coworker today (a fellow homebrewer) and we started wondering what the harm would be in planting rhysomes late. I understand they don't yield much the first year anyway, wouldn't planting...

    Low Gravity at Secondary

My gravity at transfer to secondary is 1.005. The measured OG was 1.050. I remember reading, I think in Palmer's book, that ~3/4 of the fermentation should occur in the primary. 1.005 is low, right? Is it a problem?

    Airlock Idiocy

So I'm sitting at my desk at work and I just realized that I didn't put water in the airlock of my first brew (yeast pitched ~2:00 Saturday). Are there potential problems from this? Should I run home (love the flextime!) and put water in it? I looked last night (got home at 1 AM from doing taxes...

    Hop Ring

I brewed my first batch today, an Altbier extract brew. During the boil some of the hops tended to form a ring around the brewpot. I extended the bitter hop brewtime to compensate (I opened the top and stirred them back in every 5 mins or so) but I'm not sure that this is the right strategy...

Hello from the palm of Michigan

:mug: I'm a fresh SE Michigan resident and now that I'm getting settled in my new house I've decided to start doing some research for an eventual brewing setup. I'll need more money before then, right now most of it is going here:
