    Marking Bottles Without Labels

I use the sharpie on the cap for my personal drinking. When I give some to friends though, that doesn't work so well. I found a post here that suggested using milk to stick on the labels. It really works. I print out some basic labels on plain paper, dip the back side of the label in the milk...

Pulled pork jack fruit tastes just like real pig! Had some once, didn’t know it wasn’t pork. The fruit taste like juicy fruit gum, only better. The seeds can be boiled and and have a slight pinto bean taste. Well worth trying, just make sure you have some friends over to help eat the stuff!! A...

    What are you drinking now?

I'm drinking Sprite, but my wife is drinking Tapped Apple's Lemon Chill-O. First time my wife has gone out since our car was rolled on the freeway six weeks ago. Figured it was my turn to have a Sprite and let her have a drink.

    Black sediment in primary

Did you sanitize your bottles and equipment? That’s looks a bit like mold. I have had something similar happen with beer in bottles that were not completely sanitized.

Dry yeast does not require rehydration and also does not require aeration

Well.....this is certainly eye opening information. I used to just pitch my dry yeast in the wort, but as I started doing more research and gaining more experience, switched to rehydrating the yeast. Skipping this step leaves one less thing to keep track of on brew day. I am still on the fence...

    Getting back to brewing

When brewing with extracts, the water will have the biggest impact on how your beer tastes. I only brew with extracts due to time limitations ( one day I may convince SWMBO to free up some cash for an all in one system ). Since you don’t have to worry about mash efficiency, or any of the other...

    Homebrew too strong

Wow....that can be so disappointing. I understand the alcohol taste on the front end. I have had that happen to me on a couple of batches. I tend to brew extract, so i can’t comment on the mash process. With extract brewing, that alcohol taste is from the fermentation process. First step is to...

    Root Beer *hard*

Most likely to kill off the yeast and stop the fermentation process. You don't want any bottle bombs! I wish I known about it when making my last batch of rootbeer. There are some threads on pasteurization in the cider forums that explain various methods of stove top pasteurization.

Has brewing changed your drinking habits at all?

My drinking habits while out to dinner or with friends has certainly changed. Before I would drink what ever was offered, now if it's Budwieser or an IPA ( no offense to you IPA drinkers, I'm just not a huge fan of them), I politely refuse and drink something else. If I'm out to dinner and my...

Can it be Seen as Unprofessional to Brew Beer?

I think it all depends on how you present it. Talking about the high alcohol content of your latest stout, and how smooth and easy to drink it was may get you some sideways looks. Talking about your stumbles with water quality and how it's impacting head retention, or the pro and cons of various...

    Refractometer Vs Hydrometer

I had the same issue come up recently. I was brewing NB Dragons Silk extract kit with an original gravity of 1.080 and a final gravity of 1.018 target. After two weeks of it sitting at 1.045 using my refractometer to measure the gravity, I called NB. I've been using extract kits for a few...

    Extract brewing is FAKE brewing

I've been reading this thread all day! It's both funny and offensive, like a good comedian. 😂 I've been extract brewing since 2010. Due to time, money, and space constraints, ( mostly time) I'll probably keep on extract brewing for awhile. I've been looking at the Grainfather system as...

Am I better off with spring water or Brita Filtered Tap Water for AG?

I have used city water and softened water on my brews. The softened water will give a little more salt content, but I haven't noticed a difference in taste and hasn't effected the fermentation. You will however get better head retention with softened water and a slicker mouth feel to my brews...

    SWMBO doesnt like IPAs

I used to drink only IPA, when I was much younger. Now I brew ales and stouts only. My SWMBO doesn't like everything that's brewed, but as long as there is something she likes, or I am willing to buy it at the store, everyone is happy. :D I have a friend who only drinks IPA. He keeps me...

    5 Do's And Don'ts For A New Brewer

@Minky Thanks for the clarification, I will look for some of that now that I'm running low on PBW.

    5 Do's And Don'ts For A New Brewer

My wife bought me an extract brewing kit for our anniversary 5 yrs ago, and included John Palmer's How to Brew. She insisted I read the book before I started brewing, she is weird like that. It helped me to avoid a lot of newbie mistakes as well as completely overwhelm me with information...
