    Sour beer?

So my first brew was a mr beer kit pale ale in January. It tasted worse than anything ive had in my life. Forgot I still had a case of it from 6 months ago. Just popped one open to try before empytying to reuse bottles. Holy **** am I drinking cider? Sour apples through the roof. It legit tastes...

    Galactic Punch IIPA

Brewed this finishing up some extra grains I had laying around with some galaxy hops and hop extract for the first time. Double IPA, smells great, can't wait. Using BIAB. Yeast starter taste

So I decided to taste a yeast starter for the first time. Cold crashed a WLP001 yeast starter with just an extra light dme. went to decant and tried. it's slightly acidic/sour. Is this how it should taste or do I have something bacterial going on here? Looks normal.

    Infected Beer?

I know, another person with another infection question. It's a pliny clone been in primary for 10 days, just opened to take a first gravity reading, hit target gravity. Is this an infection, or leftover krausen/yeast?

    When do you ramp up?

I hear a lot about people ramping up ferm temp to clean things up. I've got a Pliny clone that calls for 2 weeks primary, followed by 2 weeks of dry hopping. (Prob only going to do 1). Haven't taken a reading but fermentation has died down and it's been 8 days. Used WLP001 and have kept it at...

    Steeping/Whirlpool effect on boil IBU's

In beersmith, if I add 2 oz of Galaxy hops the last 5 minutes of a boil, for my 6 gallon batch I get a total of 14.1 IBUs from that addition. If i decide to do a 30 minute steep/whirlpool at flameout with 2 oz Galaxy, it says I'll get 27 IBU's from these. So I'm a bit confused. The 5 minute...

    Water science and Beer

I just moved into a house that has over $10,000 worth of equipment treating the well water. It has water radon mitigation systems (both bubble up and carbon) has a water softner, a tank for removing iron, and a reverse osmosis system....I need to get a water test/report but do you think its even...

    Temp Control

I purchased the Johnson Controls A419 module for fermnenting in my basement. The temperature down there can swing from 55-70 this time of year. (windows, park under garage etc). I bought the Johnson thinking it could both heat and cool, but I only see one power cable to plug into. I was...

    Aerating your wort

Moved from Extract to BIAB and tried to upgrade most factors in the process. Yeast starter/stir plate, Ferm chamber, Aeration system etc. Finished brewing/Chilling my 6 gallon batch, dumped into fermenter, went to Aerate. Aerator I built didn't work, FML. Also managed to spill a good portion of...

    Volcano Starter

So I made a 2L starter yesterday, while I was sleeping, the tinfoil blew off, and it looks like it errupted all down the side of my flask. There was a puddle of thick white goo all around the bottom of my flask and on the workbench, which Im guessing is yeast. I was hoping to brew today, but...

    Hose from Kettle to Fermenter

Just got a new kettle and I'm pumped to start BIAB. The ball valve did not come with a hose to transfer to fermenter, so i need to pick one up. I see clear vinyl tubing at home depot etc. Is this ok? Does it need to be food grade or anything? I know plastics matter in carboys etc, don't know if...

    Thermometer a problem?

Just got my 15 gallon megapot last night to start BIAB finally. I noticed the Thermometer probe sticks a few inches into the kettle. Is this a problem for BIAB? Anyone have any issues or am I over thinking it?

    Can Hop Boil Bags Melt?

I just ordered a Wilserbrewer BIAB Bag, as well as the hop sock and hop boil bag. I'm a bit concerned about using a hop boil bag. Will it burn/melt to the pot while I'm boiling? I'm about to do a BIAB for the first time and worried about direct heat causing a problem for the hop boil bag and or...

    cold crash and carbonation

So I'm thinking of cold crashing my pliny clone before dry hoping. Can cold crashing cause carbonation problems or make it take a lot longer due to low yeast? Will it carb faster if no cold crashing is done?

    Fermentation chamber question

I just bought the Johnson controls digital temp controller so that I can ferment in our freezer. I know fermentation can raise wort temp above room temp, so can I put the controllers temp probe directly into the wort/carboy since I care more about that temp than the ambient temp in the freezer...

    hopshot

I know Northern Brewer sells it. Anybody else sell this stuff? Maybe by a different name?

    Avoiding grassy taste

So the two ipas ive brewed had a grassy taste, the zombie dust clone on here included. Used pellet hops, dry hopped for 7 days both batches. I want to make a pliny clone, which I think has 12 oz, and I'm scared of getting that grassy off flavor again. Ive had hundreds of different commercial...

    Normal bottling volume

So what is normal bottling volume for a five gallon recipe? I've done two now and bottling volume was under four gallons for each :( . I did rack to secondary and back to bottling bucket, losing some there.

    Soapy Beer

I brewed a 5 gallon IPA for my first beer last month. The OG was 1.06. Final gravity was 1.012. I didn't correctly account for boiloff or trub loss, and bottling volume was about 4 gallons. I under pitched a single smackpack of wyeast when the wort hit 70 degrees and fermentation was a steady...

    does cold crashing hurt carbonation?

I keep reading about people cold crashing before bottling and with the amount I dry hop it sounds interesting. But isn't pulling the yeast out of suspension a bad thing right before bottling? Don't we need the yeast in order to carbonate/bottle condition?
