    Best line from a song

Not chorus Not a verse (or a stanza) Best line I'll start. So often times it happens, we live our lives in chains, and we never even know we have the key. Go.

    Throwback Tuesday. Because, neurons.

I wish I understood how my brain worked. I'm just scanning emails and get this, and of course, I immediately trigger back to all the fun we had with Mell. you still use hops in your beer? The email was about, ahem, True Beer.

    28 cones, give or take

Maybe the growing walnut shades it too much. Maybe not enough or too much water. Maybe not enough or too much fertilizer Whatever the reason, I've had more hangnails this season than I have hop cones on my Cascade plants. ALtho I must admit I planted Cascade, Tettnang and Liberty way back years...

    Anchor closing?!

I had read they were not making the Xmas ale any more, and also that they were stopping distribution nationwide, but this seems to say "closing", like, for good. https://www.sfchronicle.com/food/wine/article/anchor-steam-18192913.php

Can you actually *buy* a Raspberry Pi these days?

I just looked a couple places and the $30/$60 RPi4 or the $10 RpiZero are sold out or insanely priced. What's a tinkerer to do?

A question of sulfur with WY1968

Made a Mosse Drool clone, used second overbuild WY1968, getting a LOT of sulfur smell from the blow off. This is the 10th time I've made this recipe and I don't have any notes on prior version for sulfur. Process is pretty much the same as well. I hate to have to break out the sanitized...

What would the interwebz do? (flaked oats subbed with....?)

About to order and they're temporarily out of flaked oats. The two I think are most similar that are in stock are torrified wheat & flaked barley. The recipes I'm using them in are a blue moon clone and a NEIPA session wheat, both use 8-9% flaked oats in the grist. Which would you sub, or just...

    Rethinking pH sample "time"

I take a sample from the mash at 30 minutes. I take it in a large 60ml syringe, for no evaporation effect. But I wait until it has cooled to measure the pH, sometimes 2-3hr later. I was blithely going along this route, checking pH w/ different calculators and adjusting next time I made the...

John Guest PTC - is there a MTBF I don't know about?

Mean time between failure Duty cycle How many times can I push to connect, remove to clean, change tube, change my mind, alter tube length, etc? I ask because i've now had two John Guest fittings break - a quarter of the collar, springy, clampy inner flangeity thingy go breaky break. Perhaps...

5/16 Flare to 1/4 flare. How?

I've inherited a double regulator with multiple ports that seems to be 5/16 flare, based on OD of male threads 0.494 (close enough to 0.500) and ID of female thread at 0.442, close enough to 29/64 or 0.453) to match 5/16" flare I cannot seem to locate and easy to convert from 5/16 MFL to 8mm...

Can you clean a rubber stopper?

I have two, one gallon jugs, used for starters. After each starter-with-overbuild, I homemade PBW soak, StarSan, and keep then on the shelf with a little StarSan in them to just cover the stir bar left in there, also stoppered with an S-airlock. I end up using one all the time and just looked at...

John Guest PTC connector cracked. How tight is tight enough? Opinions solicited.

I have not completely overhauled everything I have to PTC. I end up switching the handful of PTC connectors I have around, whether to feed gas, transfer beer, whatever. Did I crank one one of the MFL joints too tightly? It cracked and leaks, gas or liquid. Luckily I do have a couple spares.

    "Add Ca(HCO3)2" -- um, how?

I was reading on pH and Kveik, here, and one example recipe said add 100gm Ca(HCO3)2 per 10bbl. I tried looking up Ca(HCO3)2 and find it is a term that " does not refer to a known solid compound ". Is it just an aqueous solution used by breweries?

    SRM went kinda green?

Made a Kolsch I've made before 6 times. Went a little lighter on OG, 1.040 instead of 1.050, using GigaYeast 021 for those light white wine esters, overbuild #5. Same grist as always, Dingemanns Pils and Briess White Wheat, this time 5#, 2.5#, respectively. Taste is a little too light but...

Kids, an amusing reason we don't drink and brew

Made my tried and true altbier recipe yesterday. Made it more than two dozen times before, everything was going great. I got a bit cocky, and started hydrating a bit too early in the process (Jack's Abby Blood Orange Wheat, times, um, let's just say, "n"). Long story longer, I measured OG with...

Ferment in Keg PSA: Always check yer hoses, kids

Last ferment in keg, I could not find a leak. The gas post of fermkeg was piped to liquid post of eventual serving keg to use fermentation gas to purge serving keg. Then gas post servekeg to jug-o-StarSan, where I never saw bubbles. Couldn't find the leak. That was a pale ale. This time I am...

The case of the disappearing fermentation gas

I'll try General, but this could be Fermentation or Kegging. I'm doing 4.5gal Yoopers Pale in a keg with a Williams TopDraw. This is the 3rd time for this recipe and setup. I am taking gas out to liquid in on a 2.5, gas out of that to liquid in of another 2.5, then gas out to jug-o-starsan...

    Not yellow snow....yellow phosphoric acid?

Bought a big ole bottle of 85% phosphoric acid. I have a smaller bottle, formerly lactic acid, cleaned carefully, for syringing small amounts during brew days. The large full bottle on the right is still nice a clear. The smaller bottle has been repeatedly opened, 2-3 a month, for a couple...
