    Miller Lite aluminum bottles

We started buying these for fishing trips because you could screw the cap back on and glass wasn't allowed. They work great and hold 16 oz. anyone reused this to bottle their homebrew? I would think as long as your seal is good they would work fine?

    Different priming rates

On my next two batches that are fermenting I want to fill one of my tap a drafts for each beer, then put the rest in bottle. Tap a draft calls for a lower priming rate than bottles. How do I do both and do it right? I usually just dump the bag of sugar from the kit in hone priming bucket...

OG 8 points higher than supposed to be

I just brewed the CDA last night and my OG was 1.066 @ 74*F, so the corrected OG was 1.067. The instruction sheet said to expect around 1.059. Am I still alright? This is my second brew, so I don't know what the difference means. Will I want to look for a number a litter higher than the...

    Expecting an infection

So I was brewing last night was using the wort chiller. Right when it reached 80, the wort chiller sprung a leak at the hose connection and starting spraying tap water into my wort. I quickly shut it down. I am expecting an infection because, well I live in Mexico and the tap water is, lets...

    Williams Carboy with Spigot

So I just ordered a secondary fermenter. I went with the Williams Vintage 5 gal with a spigot. Since my whole set up has spigots from brew pot, to fermenter, to bottling bucket, I thought it only made sense to have my secondary with a spigot. Anyone else have one...

    swing top bottle bombs?

My beer was bottled on 11/26, all in 1/2 liter swing tops. A buddy just had all 48 of his 12 ozs go off after 2 weeks in the bottle. I assume, swing tops can take more pressure? Also, when am I in the clear? I dont expect any issues, but his bombs had me worried a little. I bottled...

    Bottling from secondary Fermentor?

I have the Williams siphonless setup (every bucket has a spigot). I am about to order a 5 gal carboy with a spigot to use as a secondary fermenter. Once a beer is in secondary, do you need to rack to a bottling bucket or just bottle from the secondary fermentor? The reason I ask is the...

    Bottle sanitizer

When using the bottle sanitizer sprayer, do you use full strength starsan or can I use the 1oz to 5 gal mix?

Looking for a Dark IPA extract kit

My first batch (Williams Brown Ale) will be bottled tonight, so I am looking for my next batch. I want to go with a Dark IPA. However, I am having a hard time (probably b/c I'm a newbie) finding a good extract kit. Ideally, I'd like one with grains to steep (expand my horizons a hair, haha)...

Tweaking fermenting timeframe due to elevation

I can only assume that elevation is having a decent effect on my fermenting. It took two full days before the air lock started bubbling. I talked to another homebrewer here in Mexico City and he warned me of the lag time. So, it sounds like that is common. My question, should I extend my...

    When to check OG?

I am a little confused when you should take the OG reading. Right after you fill your fermenter and before you pitch the yeast? right after you pitch yeast? When?

    Cooling fermenter

I read the Home Beermaking book by Moore that came with my Williams kit and he mentions that a tip to cool the fermenter from 1-5* is to set in a water tub and wrap a towel around the fermenter to cool it by evaporation. My question, will this cause a problem with my spigot on my fermenter...

    williams sanitizer

So I just got my Williams kit and was planning to brew on Sat. However, I read on the sanitizer bag that you need to rinse equipment before use. http://www.williamsbrewing.com/BREWERS-EDGE-OXYGEN-CLEANSER-P3402C58.aspx Problem is, water here in Mexico is not the best. As in, I dont drink...

    Cheat Sheet for Extract Kits?

I was browsing the brew catalogs for my next extract kit purchase as well as reading the brew books (joy and How to) and had a few questions. Is there a cheat sheet for the different beer types and what is necessary? For example, which beers ferment best in 75* temps, which ones need...

DME in kits or just LME?

Quick question, are there kits with DME? We have a liquid restriction for our mail and I want to see what my alternative is if LME wont make it through. If there are not DME kits, I assume I would have to go off of recipes to know what to order?

    40 qt on gas stove?

OK, so I am thinking of going with the Williams kit that includes the 40 qt pot with spigot. http://www.williamsbrewing.com/COMPLETE-HOME-BREWERY-WITH-40-QUART-BREWKETTLE-C257.aspx My only concern is will the 40 qt work OK on a gas kitchen stove? For now, i will only be doing partial...

    Brew pot with spigot?

I'm am planning on extract brewing. Is a spigot on the brew pot worth the extra cost? Don't you get more aeration by pouring into the fermenting bucket than from a spigot?

    Elevation

I read Palmers book and am waiting on the Joys book to arrive. I havent found any information on the effects of elevation on brewing. I am in Mexico City which is about 7500 feet above msl. It takes longer to boil and you are supposed to bake at different temps, but was curious if it would...
