    GABF Activities

I'm just a month away from my first GABF experience and I'm wanting to maximize the fun! I know there are lots of great breweries and bars to visit, but I also know that GABF comes with a lot of cool beer events, dinners, and other activities. The problem is....I can't find any of them. I've...

Water profile suggestions for American IPA

Hey everyone! I need some suggestions. I am doing an all-grain American IPA (OG 1.064, IBU 76). I've never messed with water before, so I want to just use spring water purchased from Wal-Mart as a base. Any thoughts on minerals I should add to meet the needs of my beer style?:ban:

    Exploding Dunkel

I checked on my fermenting dunkelweizen and the airlock and bung blew off the top. It had been at least 24 hours since I had last checked it and it's been fermenting for three days. Obviously there's some concern here...what are my options?

    Long term dry hopping

Hey Everyone! Got a barleywine I'm about to transfer to the secondary and I need to dry hop it. My question is.....if I plan to keep this beer in the secondary for an extended period of time (like a year or better) can I leave the dry hop addition in there for that long or should I do a...

wort temp using a plate chiller

Hey everyone! I was using my plate chiller at Big Brew Day yesterday and someone asked me how I checked the temperature of my wort when I was tranferring it into my carboy. I never really thought about it, but he brought up a good question. Do any of you have a method to checking your wort...

    Gassed up

Greetings! I'm still having some difficulty with the nuances of proper carbonating in the keg. How do you gas up your kegs (what PSI, for how long) to get your beer to the right carbonation level?

    What level are you?

So I was doing an inventory of equipment in my garage and noticed how I've advanced my craft over the past two years. It got me thinking....what qualifies someone as a novice brewer, an intermediate brewer, and an advanced brewer? Is it all-grain brewing? Constructing your own brewing...

    Sour Style

Hey everyone! I'm interested in brewing a Sour Beer, but I don't know where to begin. Any suggestions?:D

    Seasonal Brewing

Hey everyone! I once saw a list of beer styles that are recommended to be brewed according to the months. In other words, "brew this style of beer during this month so it will be ready by this month". Does anyone know what I'm talking about and where I can find it??

    Do You Secondary??

Hey everyone! I've always done a secondary fermentation to improve clarity and reduce the amount of sediment, but I was wondering as I've moved heavier and heavier into kegging....is it worth it? So I'm wondering if you still use a secondary if you are kegging? I know there is an exception...

    Inconsistent carbonation

I have five kegs hooked up to my CO2. Two of them I kegged about two weeks ago and the carbonation is pretty weak. I've tried increasing the pressure from 14 to around 18, but this causes my other kegs to become overcarbonated. What am I missing?

    Hydrometers stink!

My frustration with hydrometers continues to grow. I know there has to be a better and more accurate way to take an original and final gravity reading. What are you using?

    Blichmann Beer Gun

I was reading an old posting about the Blichmann Beer Gun and I was wondering if anyone was still using it or found a better type of counter pressure filler? I've had problems with good carbonation and head retention and I was thinking that a beer gun might help solve that problem. Even as we...

    Bottling Carbonation and Head Retention

I know that these are two topics that have been brought up before, but I'm going to start a new thread anyway because I'm so frustrated! I've been brewing for a year now and have never really had any consistent success with good carbonation and head retention with the beers I bottle. Just...

    Hops ruining my keg

I recently kegged an IPA, but haven't gotten that great hops aroma I'm used to. After about two weeks in the keg, I decided to add a 1/2 ounce of Cascade pellets to the keg. Looking back, I should've put them in a hop sack, but what's done is done. It's been a week and my beer is green and...

    URGENT: Blown my top!

I've got a PM Wheat in the primary. It's been in there for about 3 days now. It has foamed up through the airlock! What do I need to do in this situation?

    Help for Central OK brewers

Any Oklahoma brewers, young and old, in or around the central Oklahoma area need to check out the brew shop in Moore called Learn to Brew. The proprietor, Chris, has brewed professionally and offers regular classes. I've been to his beginners class, all-grain class, and sensory analysis class...

    My big sack

I've completed two partial mashes so far, but haven't had a chance to taste the finished product yet. Rather than adding the grains directly to the water and having to strain them later I use a giant mesh steeping sack and sparge by placing the sack on top of a collander and pouring the sparge...

    Brewing Etiquette

I brew with two other guys on a weekly basis. The three of us are the primary financial supporters, taking turns buying supplies and sharing the cost of equipment. But we have several visitors who come by on a not-so-regular basis. We always have plenty of beer and food on hand. The normal...

    Lime it up

Has anyone tried adding limes to their brew either during the boil or in the secondary? I've got an Amber Cerveza that I'm looking to add a little flavor to and I thought lime would be a good compliment if anyone has a method they've used before.:D
