    Quit smoking today

Congratulations! I smoked for 12 years and last weekend was 2 years smoke free. It can be done! I went cold turkey and after about 3-4 days it was all mental. Some recommendations...drink lots of water and keep checking this thread. I'm sure there are a lot of us here who have been there and...

    Who is drunk right now?

I'm a golf nut so I took tomorrow and Friday off to watch the Masters Tournament. Needless to say, it's going down pretty easy tonight.

    bottle sizes for bottling

Doesn't really make a difference. To me, it's just more to clean and sanitize if you use smaller bottles. Personally, I use 22oz bottles or kegs. Priming should remain the same regardless of bottle size.

    Hop Growing In Central Texas

I am in Pflugerville as well. I planted Cascade, Mt. Hood and Nugget. Out of the three the Mt Hood is doing the best, the nugget seems to be doing the worst. I am no veteran, all 3 are 1st year, but I figured I would throw in my 2 cents.

Hop shoots have broken the soil

My Nuggets from freshops.com popped up too. I Have about 10 shoots coming up, 1 of them is about 2.5" tall now. I share your concern with the Central Texas summer, but I figure it's worth a shot.

    Bitter...what did I do wrong?

In that case you should be fine with time. Now understand, I am no expert or anything but the reason I asked if you utilized a full boil vs. a partial boil (FYI) is boiling the full volume increases the hop utilization due to the lower boil gravity, thereby increasing the bittering ability of...

    Bitter...what did I do wrong?

Did you only boil 2-3 gallons and then add 'plain' water to the fermenter to bring your volume up to 5 gallons?

    Bitter...what did I do wrong?

Did you do a full or partial boil?

    Cylindrical or Rectangular MLT?

Thanks for the responses...Seems like you can have success with either style, and each have their pluses and minuses. I think I may splurge and go with the cylindrical (even though they are pretty pricey) it will fit better in the space I have been allowed by SWMBO! Cheers!

    Cylindrical or Rectangular MLT?

I am not sure if this should be with the equipment forum (if so feel free to move it) I'm trying to put together my equipment to make the move to AG. I know there has been some discussion regarding the best SIZE for a 'cooler' style MLT, however, does anyone have any...

    Dont salt the beer!

I was always under the impression that the salt was used to take carbonation out of the beer, as well as a flavor enhancer. Since is causes so more bubbling it is releasing gas at a faster rate and therefore flattening the beer to make it easier to drink, or at least less filling. Lime was...

    Secondary Fermenter?

I usually use a secondary as well for all batches. It seems to help reduce the amount of spent yeast and whatnot once I get to the bottom of the keg. From what I understand though, and I may be wrong, chill haze is generally caused by an insufficient cold break. Who knows, using a...

    AHS Guinness kit

I am local to AHS and have used them for all of my kits...I have no complaints about any of the recipes that I have tried and they are great guys to call if you run into a problem or have a question. Some of the other guys might be able to tell you if this recipe would be better all grain...

    It's been a good week!

Congrats on the new addition...enjoy it and it keeps getting better and better. As for when you will have time to brew...I have a 2 year old and 4 month old twins and I manage to make it happen...you will too. And just think, pretty soon you will have an apprentice!

    when to plant

From reading through the posts here it sounds like you really should not expect too much from the plant the 1st and 2nd year anyway. Potting them might allow them to get going but still offer some flexibility while you settle in.
