Just got a FREE 20 gal brewpot

.. As the title suggests, I was gifted a VERY heavy duty (like 1/4" wall thickness) aluminum 20 gallon brew pot. It has a built in drain. It needs a good scrub, but otherwise is awesome. I'm a stovetop brewer, and right now I'm just doing extract batches. I have (3) 6.5 gallon fermenters and...

    brewing in the 3rd world...

Hey, I've been chatting online with a guy who is in Mali with the Peace Corps. He's been brewing some mango wine with some success, but is interested in brewing beer. Of course, they don't have barley and don't have the same equipment we do. Can anyone help me with techinques/recipes for these...

    aluminum pot as bottling bucket?

Ok, I recently made two 6 gallon batches of beer in 6.5 gallon carboys. I now need to bottle both of these batches. Unfortunately, the only thing I have that is bigger than 6 gallons (to use as a bottling bucket) is my 8 gallon aluminum brew pot. Can I use the brew pot as a bottling bucket...

    Moving to Ithaca NY

Hi all - I'm a fairly experienced AG brewer in Seattle WA - moving in a couple of weeks to Ithaca, NY. Anyone here live in Ithaca? Mostly, I could use some advice about where to buy supplies in the Ithaca area - I can't seem to find ANY LHBS's in the area...?? On the other hand, I'm excited...

    50 gallon system?

OK, I'll admit, I've been fantasizing lately - been looking at these 55 gallon brewpots: http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/brewing-equipment/brew-kettles/boilermaker-brew-kettles/boilermaker-55-gallon-brew-kettle.html I wonder, if one were to purchase one of these, how the heck would...

beer smith boil versus aroma hops

OK, noted that in brew smith I can tell it that the hops are "boil" versus "aroma". If I'm adding hops at 5 min - they are obviously aroma hops, but are *also* being boiled for 5 minutes. If I tell brewsmith that they are aroma hops, it does not include them in the IBU calculation. However, I'd...

first time with wort chiller - no fermentation at 24 hours??

Ok, I've been brewing for a long time, but have never used a wort chiller. I built one for myself, and used it this weekend for an extract batch. It was AWESOME, the wort cooled to 85 deg in about 15 min. I topped off the wort with about 2 gallons of cold water, then pitched the yeast. I...

    hazy beers?

Ok, I've had 3 batches that are hazy, not clearing. It isn't chill haze, because it's hazy warm or cold. It does not affect the flavor, at least that I can tell. 1) EdWorts Rye IPA 2) EdWorts Haus Pale Ale 3) EdWorts Haus Pale Ale again... The *only* thing I've changed in my technique...

    safbrew T-58?

so, I bought a pack of Safbrew T-58 from my LHBS. Described as: "A specialty ale yeast selected for its estery, somewhat peppery and spicy flavor. This yeast forms a solid sediment at the end of secondary fermentation, and is therefore widely used for bottle and cask conditioning." I can't...

    temperature problems

I do all grain, with a 5 gallon rubbermaid container for my mash tun. I use beersmith to help me figure my temps. I have a nifty digital thermometer with a remote sensor, so I can get good temps. However, lately I realized that I wasn't really sparging correctly. Beersmith was leading me...

    Equipment Failure Pale Ale

#1 - on the way home with my 1980 Honda CB900C - the motor started cutting in and out on the freeway. I ended up stranded on the exit ramp from the freeway, uphill with a solid line of cars behind me - rush hour. ** problem solved by replacing the blown (hopefully due to age) main fuse with...

    sitting around the house

It's Sunday, I live in the Pacific Northwest, I'm sitting around the house drinking homebrew and watching the rain fall. Now, what could be better than that? :ban:

    basmati rice - cereal mash?

SO...a while back I bought about 25# of Basmati rice, because SWMBO prefers basmati & we eat lots of rice round the place... now SWMBO has decided that basmati is unhealthy, and brown rice rules the roost at our house. I still have about 20# of basmati. Clearly, it MUST be turned into...

    how to pour?

Ok, this is a stupid question, but is perplexing me. I've been bottling more in large bottles - 22 - 25 oz, including champagne bottles. But, my glasses are 12 oz, and so, I pour 1 beer, set down the bottle, and pour another, either right then, or later. When the bottle gets set down...

    yeast problem?

Ok, I brewed a batch of edwort's Rye IPA last night. I bottled another batch while I was brewing, and saved the yeast cake with about 1/4" of beer on top of it. The wort went on top of the yeast cake. (nottingham) This morning, nothing. not even the slightest sign of fermentation. I went...

    ginger beer?

SWMBO loves jamacian ginger beer (Non alcoholic). I've got some good recipies for the brew, but technique (mostly, how to carbonate) has me stumped. I don't have kegging equipment (although this might be a good excuse to get it, LOL)... does some smart person have an idea out there about how...

    flaked corn question

Ok, I'm thinking of brewing a light hybrid beer & biermuncher's cream ale looks interesting: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f62/cream-three-crops-cream-ale-66503/ it uses flaked corn. where do I buy flaked corn from? homebrew shop or grocery store? if my LHBS doesn't have it, can I...

    beer for charity

Just a note to ya'll. We do an annual charity auction at my office for United Way. This year I donated 12 champagne bottles of appelwein & also the "home brew experience" where I go to the lucky winner's house and brew them an extract batch (not ready to take AG on the road...) Well, the...

max grain bill in 5 gal cooler?

Just a quick question - how big of a grain bill can I do in a 5 gallon rubbermaid cooler? I'm looking at a recipe that takes 13 pounds of grain, but the most I've done in my cooler is 11 pounds. 11 was getting close to full, but there was still a bit of space. Hoping I can do 13 or even 14 (??)
