    Stout/ porter suggestions

Hi gang. I love porters and stouts in the winter, but those around me think they are too bitter. (IPA’s are bitter to me - not these!) What I’m wanting to brew is a rich coffee flavor that my friends who think dark beers are bitter may like. I’m not sure if this should be something like...

    24hr waiting period on 5# co2 refill?

I have to drive 50 miles to get my tank filled, or drop it off at the local Airgas shop and wait a week for them to take it to the same Airgas headquarters and fill it and bring it back during their once a week run. It is inconvenient, but you have to drive 50 miles around here to see a movie...

First Lager...Beer going well, but screwed up some food

I have been wanting to build a keezer, but my wife and I needed a little extra freezer space and that was the priority. So a few months ago we bought a second refrigerator to keep kegs and bottled beer in, and used the freezer above for food. I started experimenting with the refrigerator...

Please help assess results of first AG..

When I racked my first AG to keg a couple of weeks ago, the sample had a lemon/orange peel taste...sour, but not bad. After two weeks at 11 psi of continuous gas, I pulled another sample today. The sour taste today is just as bad as it was with my original sample. It may even be worse, but...

    Slightly sour taste.....

I brewed this recipe a couple of months ago and transferred it to a keg this weekend. It had a slight sour taste to it...kind of like lemons or orange peel. I do not know if this is to be expected with recipes with corn, if it is the hops, yeast in suspension, an infection, or just because it...

Brewed First AG yesterday....how did I do?

I used Deathbrewer's Easy Stovetop AG thread as a guideline, but did a 7+ gal boil since had a large pot and was using a gas burner. My stove won't boil 3 gals. The recipe was BierMuncher's Cream of Three Crops, adjusted as follows for a 5.5 gal batch: 6# Pale Ale Malt 1# Crystal 10L 2#...

I received my grains for my first AG today...woohooo..

Sorry, I just needed to tell someone :ban: UPS man left them on the front porch and I found them right after I read the good news about SB 153. I may try to make a move on SWMBO while good things are happening! But first things first, I need to store my grains until brew day.

    Bama Blizzard...LOL!

It's a crazy day in south Alabama. People are spinning out on the sides of the roads, and buying up all of the milk and bread! Let a little snow be in the forecast here, and we go nuts! Give us an icy road, and the Nascar mindset kicks in and we have to go for a drive. This is our first real...

Need some carbed keg testing ideas....

I put 2.5 gallons of Canadian Ale in a 5 gal keg about 6 months ago as my first kegging experience. I purged the oxygen and then blasted it with 30 psf CO2 to seal it. I rolled it a few times, shot a little more gas in and then left it in the closet. A few weeks later, I hooked gas back up...

    Pale Ale & Fruit

Hi guys....been awhile. I have a True Brew Pale Ale kit which had a can of LME and 2#'s of DME, some grains, and Williamette hops. Basic kit, and I just put it into the primary. I was thinking about bottling half of it and adding fruit to the secondary on the other half. I prefer...

    4 weeks in bottles...still flat

Once I post what I think is a problem here, it usually resolves itself a few days later (as you guys always say it will). I hope this is the case here. I posted here http://https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/first-5-gal-brew-74240/index2.html#post882083 last weekend that it was taking awhile...

    The Noise Woke Me Up....

It was 2:50+/- am.......I thought it was my wife snoring at first, but then realized it wasn't her. Maybe I just thought I heard something....afterall, I was sound asleep. Then the dogs barked. So I went to check on them. One of them was digging under the privacy fence and the other was...

Another "What's in my beer?" thread...

Sorry guys, I read the other links but didn't find this problem and waited as long as I could stand to ask the question! I don't think I ruined it, or that it has mold in it, or anything like that. Just wondering since it was my first 5 gal batch if it is a procedural problem or normal...

    Help w/ Oatmeal Stout...

I have only used pure extract until now, but would like to make an Oatmeal Stout. I told my LHBS what I wanted to build and he recommended a True Brew Irish Stout kit with additional flaked oats. Kit came with (1) can of hopped LME, 2lbs of dark DME, 8 oz. of crushed crystal, 6 oz. of...

    First 5-gal brew...

I finally used up all of my MRB recipes and want to make my first 5-gal batch to enjoy during football season (or at least the first week of football season :D). Here's what I know: I do not like the IPA's, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and other pale ales, or at least the kind of hops used in...

Big Time newbie mistakes w/ my AW

I posted earlier this month that I was using liquid yeast for the first time and wasn't sure it was working (http://https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?p=595049#post595049). After three weeks, the bubbles on top have almost cleared as has the AW. I can still see lots of small bubbles...

    Liquid yeast question....

I made my first 2.5 gals of Apfelwein over the weekend and used Wyeast 3068. This was also my first time using a liquid yeast. Within an hour it was on the bottom of the carboy. I gave it a shake and got it mixed again. It is at the bottom again. I am getting a bubble in the airlock every 5...
