    Beet 120V Element/Controller?

I bought a spike kettle a while ago with an extra 1.5” TC port I had intended on using for an electric element to help stabilize mash temps. Just wanted to know if anyone has a recommendation for an element/controller combo for this purpose? Not really trying to boil but if it helps to reduce...

    Second pour foam

Wondering if anyone else has this issue? I have 6 ft of 3/16” ultra barrier silver tubing and a 630SS perlick faucet. My pressure is currently on the low side, 10psi. I pour off about 4oz prior to my first pour of the night then the first pour is perfect. Second pour is super foamy, about half...

    1st year hop harvest potency

First year chinook in eastern Washington state, wondering if they are approaching harvest or if I should give them more time? I planted the rhizomes late, around the end of May so they may be a bit premature. I picked one and rubbed it in my hands... it didn't have a lot of aroma and was...

    Lacto vs Campden

Will adding Campden tablet (very small piece) in my mash water have a negative effect on my lacto when doing a sour mash??

    Split batch ideas?

I have ~3.5 gallons of wildflower mead in primary I would like to transfer to 3 separate jugs for experimental batches. It had an OG of 1.122 and I used 71-B and it finished out around 1.015. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for what to do with them? I figured it would be fall...

    New School Pitching Rate

I just made 3.5 gal of 1.122 OG mead and when I went to get my yeast the guy at the shop convinced me to only get one 5g package of 71-B. This is my 5th batch and I wasn't sure if I had used a bigger pack before but he said that would be more than enough. Reading back on "The Complete Meadmaker"...

    1.040 Hefe

First extract brew in a while, tried the blood orange Hefe yesterday and missed my pitch temp and was out of ice so I used cool water to bring it to 72F. Sadly that took me down to 1.040 OG. Should I try boiling a pound of DME in a quart of water and adding that to primary or leave it alone? I'm...

    Kegerator: edgestar vs igloo

Been in the market for a kegerator/fermentation chamber for a while now and right now there is a 6 cu ft igloo kegerator at Home Depot for $298. I'm aware that the taps etc that come with it are garbage but if the unit itself is solid that could make it worthwhile. Ive also seen an edgestar...

Brown yeast in vial, good to use?

    "Hiding" off-flavors

I just finished brewing a clone of "Bad Santa" a few weeks ago and I'm not too impressed with the hydrometer samples I've tasted thus far. You can see the recipe on BYO's website if you want... It's a 1.075 OG beer and I let it go for 15 days in primary at 65-68, the Irish ale yeast really tore...

    Lager-like Ale?

Ok I'm trying to make something in the realm of a Bohemian Pilsner but I don't have the ability to lager. I have a cool brew fermentation bag and I have been able to keep that around 60F no problem. I was thinking about using a kolsch or alt yeast with a BoPils grain/hop bill. I've never tried...

    Typical Homebrew off flavor

I recently brought a friend to my homebrew club meeting and he pointed out an interesting flavor present in every beer there, including my own. It was a slight acidic or astringent character that was present in the aroma as well as the finish of the beers. It seemed to be most detectable through...

    The Latest from OMMEGANG

Has anyone tried the "Cooperstown Ale" from OMMEGANG? It's simply amazing! It's a Belgian blonde and I am going to try to replicate it but need some advice. On the bottle it says brewed with barley, wheat, and oats. Also says brewed with American and noble hops. I emailed Phil Leinhart and the...

    Metal flakes in corny

I recently bought a lot of 4 used corny kegs and after using some PBW on them, I have been finding metal flakes floating in the solution. Anybody else experience this?

    Vintners Harvest Fruit Purée

I'm trying to make a blackberry melomel in the style of B Nektars "Black Fang" which is only 6% ABV. I'm trying to make enough to get a full 3 gal carboy for aging, this will probably be my aging vessel AFTER secondary conditioning with the Vintners Harvest Blackberry purée. I have 5 pounds of...

    Help! Took apart regulator!

Huge mistake trying to transfer this late at night and took the face off my regulator where the valve connects to the main part (?) and can't get it to work right! Anyone accidentally disassemble a taprite before?? Heeeeelllppp P!

    Basic Draft System, now what?

So I recently splurged on a basic draft system with 5# co2 tank, regulator, hoses w/picnic tap and 4 (3gal) pin lock cornys (thanks to AIH deal). My question is what is the best way to use this system efficiently? I have a mini fridge dedicated to beer, should I cram the tank and a keg or two in...

    Is that CO2? Wow!

So my first batch of mead has a bit over 24 hrs since I pitched the yeast. I added my second sna addition about 7-8 hrs ago and thought I'd give the cap a punch (mango melomel) and when I leaned into the bucket to take a whiff I bout fell on my ass with a strong burning sensation from the fumes...

    Fruits affect on gravity

I just finished my first mead, which was a mango melomel. I used 5# of tupelo honey, 2# of wildflower honey, 4# of dole frozen mango chunks and 2.5 gal of publix spring water. I was hoping for a higher OG, mine came out to 1.076 and I am wondering if the sugars in the fruit will add to the...

    blending honey

Has anyone blended different types of honey? I know blending hops or malt can give you a more complex character in beer, will the same idea translate over to mead? If so, what are some complementing types of honey? I was thinking wildflower and tupelo but I am open to suggestions.
