Cleaning a carboy - To scrub, or not to scrub

This is what I do. Who has time for brushing and scrubbing, let the oxyclean do the work for you!

    Belgian Tripel extract

For the darker colour, like others have said, try to add most of your extract at the end of the boil, or else it will generally be darker. For the alcohol taste definitely let it age and see. The tripel I made was around 9%, so it won't be quite the same, but it was just like you are describing...

Making a blood orange Hefeweizen and need help

I had good luck following this recipe for a blood orange wit where you boil the flesh/zest and add it right into the primary, https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=243503

    Beer sitting on the trub

Check out the experiment that brulosophy did you compare lots of trub in the primary vs a little amount. It seems like it does make a difference, but it depends on the results you are after. http://brulosophy.com/2014/06/02/the-great-trub-exbeeriment-results-are-in/

    Maturing vs Stale

Like others said, it depends on the beer and the style. Any wheat beers i have made are best young, so once they have a few weeks in primary and a few in bottles to carb up i will drink them right away and they noticably drop off in taste after a a few months in the bottle. I made a...

Swing tops, plastic gaskit, no carbonation?

I would say this is the best advice. I always store them open and not clamped so that the rubber can spring back. If it's always clamped down it's always compressed and the longer it is compressed the less likely it is to spring back to shape.

    Fermenter Head Space

You could use one of the carboy caps with two hose connections on your secondary and have a blowoff tube that runs from your primary to the secondary, which would purge out any oxygen during your primary fermentation. Then have an airlock on the second hole of the secondary to make sure there is...

My FIRST Hefeweizen. Supply List and Tips?

I have made and enjoyed a few extract wheat beers and will give you my very non expert opinion/tips on my experience so far. What do you normally like to drink for wheats? Try to find out what yeast strain they use or what commercially available comes close. Everyone talks about wyeast 3068...

Fruit and Spice Beer Blood Orange Belgian Wit

I wouldn't age it on purpose. Most wheats are best young and don't age as well as most beers. This recipe in particular i found as it aged the orange flavour fades, and i found it to get more and more bitter the longer i had it. I don't know if this was a result of maybe getting too much of the...

Double Expired Coopers Pilsner Brew Journal

The darker brown ripples in the foam isn't anything to worry about. I think it's just dry edges when the light bubbles break. I would skip the secondary unless you plan on a long term bulk aging, it's just another chance of infection or oxidation. Google yeast washing, there are a few...

Coopers kits(5) Pilsner Five Years Expired

If it were me i would buy 5 different yeasts and make an expirement of it to see the effects of different yeasts.

    Rehydrating Yeast

I've put the unused half in a ziplock bag back into the fridge and used it a month or two later. I probably wouldn't do this with a big batch of beer just in case. But for the cost of 1 or 2 gallons of apple juice i don't feel so bad if something happened to it.

    Rehydrating Yeast

You could always go 1.5 packs and use the other .5 pack to make a gallon or two of cider.

Best way to add DME during boil

Sometimes in a bag, sometimes in a bowl, depends on the size of the bag. I tend to add it in 1 pound of dme at a time, try to dump it as quick as reasonably possible so it doesn't get too gunked up on the bowl or bag, but if a little bit sticks to the bag and doesn't make it in, don't sweat it...

Having carbonation problems with PET Bottles

FG is stable, and co2 volumes were fine for the glass bottles that were bottled at the same time, from the same bucket, using the same bottling wand.

Having carbonation problems with PET Bottles

Yes i have been using a bottling wand and try to get it as close to the top as possible without spilling over. I have been trying to twits the caps on as tight as possible, and they actually seem to bulge a little on the sides from the threads, is it maybe too tight and ruining the seal?

Having carbonation problems with PET Bottles

I need some help from the experts, and anyone who uses the PET bottles for bottling their beer. As i come by them i am mostly using grolsh bottles now when i bottle my beers, but from time to time i run out and have some of the brown plastic bottles that serve as a backup What i have been...

    Strawberry Rhubarb

This could be interesting, and would give me something besides pies to use our rhubarb in. Tagging this thread. I've been sitting here wondering what kind of beer i'd like strawberry and rhubarb in, and what comes to my mind is a belgian, maybe a tripple, but something that's not going to...

    Canadian Supplier of Hop Rhizomes?

I know hops can be poisonous if eaten by cats and dogs, so i imagine most wild animals can tell enough to stay away from them. It might be worth trying to plant a hedge of hops around your garden and see if it does anything to keep other critters away.

    US-05 vs WY1056

I have never noticed headaches from 05 specifically, but there are a few beers that are popular here locally that i can't drink more than 1 or 2 of without getting a headache, and these were all commercial beers, so accidently mixing in yest from the bottle weren't the issue. I wasn't too...
