    Ballast points sculpin IPA

Where do you shop? I normally go to the homebrewer in el cajon.

    Ballast points sculpin IPA

Finished this beer and kegged. Went out and bought sculpin to compare against. This is pretty close, and makes a really good IPA either way, but there are some differences that are not quite nailed. These could totally be a result of actual brew process rather than ingredients, but here are my...

    Who prefers bottling over kegging?

Bottling is not bad, and I don't think anyone is trying to say it is; and in some cases it has advantages over kegging. I think we can all agree that both kegging and bottling have benefits. What I am saying is that a keg system allows you to bottle beer, thus giving you all the benefits of both...

    Sweet Stout Stuck?

I bottled mine at 1.03 and it certainly needed a bit of ageing, but otherwise came out fine after a few weeks. If you add lactose your beer is going to have a higher FG by design, and that number seemed to work fine.

    Who prefers bottling over kegging?

There seems to be a trend here, from what I can see there are two types of people in the world: People who have not kegged and therefor believe bottling is perfectly fine People who have kegged and know how much less hassle it is I am seeing a lot of phrases like "it's easy" with...

    Questions about shipping homebrew...

I've shipped before. I wouldn't use USPS as it's illegal flat out. UPS and fedex from my understanding was more grey area. As for the actual packaging, I would make sure and put your beer bottles in ziplock bags, that way if they break or leak, the liquid won't go everywhere. After that...

    Infected?

Looks totally fine. I've never had an infection, but smell is kind of useless I think. Some really tasty beer has smelled god awful during fermentation. From what I have seen taste is the only really good way to determine infection, unless you have literal mold growing on your beer.

    Who prefers bottling over kegging?

Startup cost is certainly a factor, once you have the stuff it's pretty cheap. I would guess around .50/gal. Cleaning the keg and the lines is not an issue though. Once it's empty just fill it up with soapy water, let it run through the lines, rinse and repeat with sanitizer. The whole...

    Who prefers bottling over kegging?

If you forget about time to drink, and money, there is no reason to bottle as a primary way to carb your beer. If nothing else it's a huge investment in time and energy to wash and sanitize all those bottles and then fill and cap them. I've always kegged, my first beer ever made went...

How do you tell a guy his beer SUCKS

Assuming you are giving them to a good group of people you may be suffering from a bit of denial if everyone hates the beer you make. I've certainly had picky people not like some kinds based on taste, but I would say on the whole most people really like them. You may want to ask for more...

Fruit beer... how long in secondary?

Even if there is no max time for the fruit to rot since it will be sitting in alcohol, I imagine there is a point where the fruit has no more flavor to give. My guess is it's long before 6 months, in fact you have probably started to lose fruit flavor after that long.

Newbie Q's. Fermentation time & Evaporation

For your average alcohol beer, you are looking at 1-2 weeks. You can also take gravity readings, when it stops dropping you are done. You will lose a significant amount of beer to evaporation, how big that number is depends on a lot of things, but you should plan for at least a gallon...

adding body with lactose post fermentation

I just finished a milk chocolate stout using lactose. I can attest to the sweetness being closer to powered coffee creamer. It works well for my chocolate stout, but I would be hesitant to use it with other beer styles.

Does anyone else think Sam Adam's beer sucks

Yep going to have to flatly disagree. While all of their beers are not rock stars they have a decent quality core product and a good number of their seasonal ales are good too. They also get super bonus points for having excellent bottles for your own brew. They are dark brown, non twist...

How do you tell a guy his beer SUCKS

Just be honest. There is no need to sugar coat things if he's your friend and asking for feedback. Maybe he actually does suck at brewing and should be doing something else, it's not the end of the world. He won't be able to make that decision unless you give him real feedback and the...

    noob question. bottle bucket

As others have said I would cold crash and then move to bottle bucket, you want the cleanest possible beer going into your bottles. Cold crashing drops all the floaties to the bottom, where you can avoid sucking them up.

    Getting labels off of bottles

Yeah it seems like the smaller the brewery the more glue they use, and the stronger it is. Most of the big names seem to have streamlined their profits all the way down to the glue that is used. Which is great for us as it means the labels slide right off. Personally if they don't just...
