    sight glass material

I've added a sight glass to my boil keggle; my concern, however, is if the material I used will melt under high temp. The sight glass I ordered from Northernbrewer back in the day for my HLT appeared to be a cut racking cane, so I did the same with my DIY boil keggle sight glass. The HLT one...

SS Braid for a hop stopper?

Anyone use a SS braid as a hop stopper in their boil kettle? I was thinking of making a loop around a copper-T connecter with oetiker clamps. Maybe the filter would be too strict and easily clog? Anyone? Anybody?

Just had my keggles welded ...

Just had 2 keggles welded with 4 connections (1/2" couplings for ball-valves and 1/8" couplings for sight glasses) for a grand total of $45. Only thing is...dude guy didn't clean up the welds so there's a lot of heat-stress visible around them. I used a SS wire brush to clean the outsides then...

For those of you who use a water filter...

I've used a Whirlpool WHCF-DWHV whole house water filtration system for my past two brews along with their 2 micron charcoal filter that removes sediment and chlorine. I know some of you use similar setups and I was wondering if you store the filter filled or drained with water? In normal...

    I built a wigwam.

Here's my interpretation of a hop garden. I need insight: did I do good? Will my hops explode? What if I have to go the bathroom ... who will watch my hops to see if they're growing while I'm gone? The portion to the left is 6 feet square, with hops all spaced about 3.5 feet apart...

I don't know how to keg because I'm so stupid.

I just kegged my first batch tonight and I feel like a new woman. My question is this: to achieve 2.7 volumes of CO2 at 50 degrees Fahrenheit I need about 20 PSI. OK. For serving I read ~ 9-10 PSI. Alright. Query: How long do I keep the keg at 20 PSI? Should I bleed pressure and refill...

Best Beer around Panama City Beach?

Yeah...you heard me. PCB. We're going for the uber-lame spring break trip, complete with airbrush T-shirts and hussies as far as the eye can see. Only thing is, I can't bring myself to drink anything sub-par. I want to drink RIS all day in the hot sun--I want to sweat malt. Anyone know of...

Building your IC into the keggle.

Any unforseen problems building my IC into the keggle? I like the idea of having it a permanent fixture that doesn't need to be removed and subsequently seperately cleaned. I know the acidity of the wort does slowly dissolve copper, but I'm assuming the rate and only moderately acidic pH...

    Build your own bulkhead fitting...help?

I found a local plumbing store that had 1/2" nipples and couplings for WAAAY cheaper than what I've been paying via northernbrewer (of course). I only now need the o-rings, stainless washers, and lock nut. I'm building this: http://www.northernbrewer.com/pics/fullsize/kk-bulkhead.jpg And...

    Solder or pipe thread?

I'm putting together a distribution manifold for a march pump, one that would allow me to send/receive fluid from any vessel with a few valve changes. Would you rather go solder or pipe-thread? Compression fittings would be nice...but at 12 duckets each from home-depot for 1/2" I think that'll...

    What would you do?

Delimma: I'm making my debut into AG brewing as soon as I gather all the equipment (just finished my cooler-MLT). I need a bigger brew kettle. My plan was to order a 10-gal megapot with all the trimmings (thermometer, SS valve; $204). However I found an old sanke keg in our garage and...

    Critique my MLT

Just slapped it together last night. I'm switching to AG as soon as my 10-gal megapot comes in the mail. Any obvious problems? You can't see in the photos but the bottom of the copper piping has holes drilled. I'm most concerned about the height of the drainage spiggot from the...

    Anyone heard of/use Trubclear?

My LHBS pointed me toward a product called Trubclear that supposedly works even better than irish moss at clarification. I can't find any website for a manufacturer and haven't found any previous mention on the forums. Anyone know anything about it? How much to use/when?

sterilizing dry hop additions in the oven?

I've not usually attempted any sterilization of my dry hop additions in the past; however, I'm about to add a handful of oven-sterilized oak chips to a DFH 90-min IPA when I rack it to secondary. Bad idea to throw the hops in the oven, too? Is the dry heat a problem?

Who really sees a thick krausen in their starters?

I've recently started making starters for all my beers. Everything I read says the best time to pitch is when you have a thick krausen showing heavy active fermentation. However, I've never actually had a starter produce a krausen any thicker than maybe 1 mm around the very periphery of my...

    Spigot on a primary

After a number of apple-esque brews thanks to likely infection I've become rediculously paranoid about sanitation and limiting exposure of my batches to only the plastic and glass of 1° and 2° fermenters. I usually patiently wait until day 7 of 1° to take a terminal gravity reading ... right as...

A little chemistry on a new wort chiller

My first post--be gentle. A friend of mine donated about 30' of 3/8" copper tubing he found in the shed of a house he bought. It looked as though it had never been used and was in good shape. I took it home, introduced it to steel wool, wound it around a paint can and--voila--wort chiller...
