Think I have my first contamination.

Racked today, 25 days in primary. There was still some remaining floating chunks but not much. Smelled of alcohol, more than I would expect. Guessing the coopers didn't finish. Maybe should have left it. See how it tastes in a week or so. Thanks for the insights. Leaned a lot.

Think I have my first contamination.

Thx, DS. That makes a lot of sense. Gonna try to rack over today (24 days in primary). If it hasn't finished fermenting I'm assuming the yeast had issues in addition to this aeration issue.

Think I have my first contamination.

Thanks for the info. That makes a lot of sense. Does anyone have a take on this aeration issues? Do you brewers do it? Pretty sure it was increasing the chances of gunk in my airlock but does it impact fermentation times?

Think I have my first contamination.

18 days in and it seems to be clearing up some but still has some krausen on top. In the past I had been aerating by tossing the batch back and forth between the brew pot and fermentor five times as suggested by the Palmer book I have. Only did it once this time thinking the extra foam this...

Think I have my first contamination.

Wow! Optimism. I've moved all ten batches after two weeks and haven't seen this before. I upgraded to a freezer and controller recently and lowered temps to 65 but pulled another batch two days ago that was good at two weeks. Nottingham vs coopers maybe (hopefully).

Think I have my first contamination.

Well, 10 batches in and I think I lost one. This is a wheat beer using coopers dry at 16 days. At 14 it looked like the krausen just may not have settled. The bubbles in the pic appeared more recently. Doesn't smell great but idk. Trash?

    Keg Force Carbing Methods Illustrated

I set and forget at 12 psi and the keg gets very drinkable at 5 days, 7 and I'm digging in. The temp of your fridge is not the same as the temp of your beer. Put a glass if water in the fridge and test it with a liquid thermometer.

    Co2 T split = foam?

I've been using the chart below which suggests 45 and 40 degrees should both carb fine at 12 psi. I certainly wouldn't expect it so over carbed that co2 would be in the line. Am I missing something? http://www.kegerators.com/carbonation-table.php

    Co2 T split = foam?

Thanks, guys. Since moving to the new keg alls been good. The keg getting low plus the temp change due to adding a second keg may have done it but the temp change was minimal (5 degrees or so) and I'm aware of the increased foam as a keg lowers but this was ridiculous (like 16oz of pure foam)...

    Co2 T split = foam?

On a side note, loving this hobby but lots to learn. Really appreciate the help.

    Co2 T split = foam?

Things were working well at five feet which is what some calculations were suggesting (just over 6 really) and what my local brew shop said. Might try 10 tho. Thx. Noticed a space of air in the beer line by the connect. Might be the issue. What would cause that? Just moved to a new keg of brew...

    Co2 T split = foam?

A second pour is reading just under 40 so the second keg seems to be dropping the temp 5 degrees. According the force carb chart I'm using 12 psi should still put the carbonation at a reasonable level.

    Co2 T split = foam?

Hmmmmmm. Very interesting. I'll do some testing. Thx

    Co2 T split = foam?

Balanced my kegerator to nice results (5 ft beer line, copper tube covering line in tower, 45 degrees at second pour and 12 psi). Seemed all good. Recently I split my co2 line with a plastic T split to get a second keg carbing, planning on getting a dual tap at some point. Now I'm getting a lot...

Temp readings - chilling and serving

Been think about getting a wart chiller. Passed for now due to the price but, yeah, looks like a great DIY project. Good call. As for the probe, I haven't seen it in the unit. Should it be visible? I'll do some research. Checked a couple 2nd pours. Right around 42 right now. Good enough for me...

Temp readings - chilling and serving

Thx for the reply. As a noob I'm surely overly concerned with contamination. Tried stirring while chilling a couple days ago, just used my stirring spoon figuring it had been well boiled. Went great. WAY quicker to pitch temp. Used less than 20lbs of ice as opposed to close to 40lbs (close ice...

Temp readings - chilling and serving

I noticed during my last brew that my thermometer measures significant lower against the side then in the middle of my wort when in the ice bath (which is where it wants to sit when the lid is fully covering). Makes sense, I just hadn't thought about it and was therefore pitching at a low temp...

    Beer in airlock

Hello! So for my first brew attempt I added half the water, boiled, to the fermentor at the beginning then added the wart and tossed it back and forth several times as suggested by the Palmer book I'm using. I ended up with too much and the fermenter nearly exploded! Beer out the airlock...

    Keg Force Carbing Methods Illustrated

I have a nostalgia krs2100. Might fit a 5lb tank at an angle on the back ledge and 2 cornys but I'm leaning towards no. Anyone know? Rather not drill if I can avoid it.

    Keg Force Carbing Methods Illustrated

I was able to find co2 yesterday after all! $30 to swap out a 2.5lb tank can't be my best option going forward tho. My first batch, an ipa, tasted good! Racked and brewed a porter. Rolling! Think I'll need to rig a bigger co2 outside my kegerator to get this 2 keg plan setup for long term use...
