    PH up for my pool

While dosing my pool chemicals this evening, I was adding a little pH up and was looking at the ingredients on the bottle and it listed the only ingredient as "100% potassium carbonate". I think everyone see's where I'm going with this. Opinions? By the way, I then checked my latest batch...

Divide by 4 or by 5?

This might be my first senior moment (age 49) but, if I'm scaling a 5 gal recipe that has about a gallon of honey and 4 gallons of water, do I divide by 4 or 5? Thanks, Greg

    Adding Yeast to Carbonate??

I brewed a Belgian Tripel from Midwest HBS back in April. It has been in secondary for about 7 months. I'm ready to bottle but am concerned that there won't be any active yeast to carbonate it in the bottle. What are my options? Thanks, Greg

DeuS Brut Des Flandres Belgian Ale

I tried a bottle of this a few days ago. Great fruity taste at the beginning followed by an interesting alcohol flavor to end. Almost like drinking a cocktail. 11.5% abv. Here is a short description from Wiki: DeuS (Brut Des Flandres) is a premium Belgian beer manufactured in Buggenhout...

    Another Quick Bulk Aging/Sparkling Question

Since I have 5 1 gal carboys bulk aging is it resigned to being still mead? I was thinking of making one or two gallons sparkling but I'm guessing that the yeast will be dead by then. Do I have alternatives? Thanks, Greg

    Bulk Aging Question

Right up front i'm asking...please be kind. My question is: When bulk aging instead of bottling is there a point where you remove the airlock and seal the carboy? Thanks, Greg

EZ Cap (Grolsch) 16oz Bottle @ Midwest

Can anyone tell me why these bottles are so cheap at Midwest? I did the math and they are less than $20 a case (12) including shipping. Anywhere else they are maybe $20 - $30, then add the shipping. Even at my LHBS they are $29 a case. Thanks, Greg

    Egg Fruit and Chico Fruit

Just returned from a few days visiting family in Hawaii. Picked up and brought back some egg fruit and Chico. The egg fruit I tried, I remember liking but can't for the life of me remember what it tasted like. The chico I tried with the skin on and tasted somewhat like brown sugar. My question...

    Question about Yeast

I'm planning to mix up a 5 gallon batch of must. Then I wanted to divide the must into separate 2 and 3 gallons containers and use a different yeast in each container to ferment. Do I need to adjust the amount of yeast I use in each, from say a 5 gram foil pack. Do I need to rehydrate and put...

First Attempt At Mead...'lil Advice Please

I've been brewing beer for about a year now and I would like to try a mead. I've had mead a couple of times but it was years ago. I can't even remember if it was still or sparkling. What I would like to do is acquire 5 one gallon carboys and make 4 different one gallon batches so I might be...

    Capping a Champagne Bottle

I wanted to bottle in champagne bottles and got about a hundred for free off of craigslist. Cleaned them up and not knowing what size the mouth was, I tried capping one. No go with the regular size caps. So I go out and get the larger caps and a new bell housing for the red baron capper. I flip...

    Paranoid...maybe just a little

Pitched my first batch of ESB on saturday at 6:00pm. Temp in basement 68 degrees. Started seeing a bubble every 3-4 seconds 24 hours later. 24 hours after that, no more bubbles (or so it appears). Just left it alone for a few days and today I took a gravity of 1.015. Of course being a noob I...

    Kettle with/without Spigot

Income tax is back! Time to buy my starter kit. I've decided to buy a 7.5 gallon kettle from Midwest. Do I have them drill the hole(s) for a spigot (and maybe a temp gauge)? Do the benefits out weigh the cost? And is it something I'm going to wish I had further down the road? Greg

Hello All, I haven't capped a single bottle yet because I've decided to do this right from the beginning. When I start brewing it will be from my basement which I have yet to finish. I'm looking for some advise on equipment (gas or electric stove, dishwasher, etc.) and design for the kitchen...
