    Rhizomes?

I don't believe there is any way to tell variety until they produce hops. I would keep it as a hobby and either plant them, give them away, or make them compost. My hop garden is getting overrun with new plants popping up everywhere, I have come to terms with pulling up the extras an adding...

    "Disaster" Averted.....Please Read to Learn!

Thanks for posting that. It might have been why my numbers did not make sense for an oatmeal stout I made in feb.

    Wort chiller build.

For what it's worth. I soldered two 90 degree copper fitting on to my wort chiller. Just incase the hoses leaked water (ie h2o getting past the hose clamps) the h2o would drip onto the ground and not flow into the kettle. When I first built my chiller I bent a 90 in the tubing, then thought it...

Should I have more faith in Beersmith?

Just wanted to second this. I did my 1st all-grain with my new setup. Also 1st time using BS for a brew. BS said to heat strike h2o to 166. I had most of my h2o in the tun at 155. I kept removing heating and adding till I got to 166. I doughed in and mixed. After covering and waiting...

    bottleing time question?

I made my 1st batch last summer. Used wine yeast. I did not use any campden or finishing additives. I let it age at about 60-65 degrees for almost 3 months in a carboy. I did not add any priming sugar as I wanted a still mead. No bottle bombs here. It tastes great after aging almost a...

My neighbors kid ruined my hops!

Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, hop for a hop (brake his legs so he can't hop). Sorry, I couldn't resist.

    Yes, another AG first-timer

Congrads on your 1st AG batch. I finally took the AG plunge last thursday. I too was impressed how easy it was. I got 1.044 w/ about 6.0 or 6.5 gals. My biggest mistake was not stiring the mash enough at the begining and realized I had hot and cold spots. My porter is now it the...

1.020 in secondary, time to bottle?

Mind if I add my .02.... I ferment in the primary until the bubbles commence to about 2 a minute (about 3 to 4 days). Then I leave it in the secondary for 1 week. I read this guideline in a homebrew book. I have always done my secondary fermentation this way. Perhaps I should go by the sg...

    Hello from Maine

Opp's sorry I miss read your post. Oakhill bevrage in scarborough has a bunch of micobrews and exotic brews. They also have homebrewing supplies in a limited selection. Though not savy on the HB front, the owner is very welcoming. Look for them behind McDonalds off RT1 at Oakhill corner in...

What Sanitisers and Cleaners are used.

I have always used bleach to sanitize my brewing equipment. Star san has got my attention. Can I really fill my fermenter (6.5 gal. plastic bucket) with star san, wait a bit dump it out, and fill with wort? No rinse and no drying? It just sounds too good to be true.

Extract addition in last 15min of boil?

I'm a newbie here, but I have several batches under my belt. Is the only reason for a short boil (15 minutes) to prevent darkening?? Since I brew mostly porters and stouts I'm not worried about color. Or should I be? Does the camaliziation (<<is that a real word) cause anything more than a...
