Red Hook Autumn Ale Clone Recipe

I contacted Redhook as well and they gave me bupkis. Oh well. My beer ended up pretty tasty, although certainly not a clone. If I were to brew it again - which I most likely will - I'll cut down on the Crystal 75. My beer was way too dark and had too much of that dark fruit flavor the high...

Red Hook Autumn Ale Clone Recipe

Redbeard - did you ever hear back from Redhook? I'm a big fan of this beer, but I couldn't find it anywhere this year. I decided I would attempt to clone it without first looking up any recipes or emailing the brewery. So I remembered what I could, worked off of the stats on their website...

    Kegging for Dummies

It's been sitting at 500psi all day in my 40F fridge. Thanks again guys!

    Kegging for Dummies

It's been sitting at 500 for a few hours now so I think it has stabilized. Thank you both for reassuring a worried homebrewer. I had used some dish soap, water, and a sponge to check for leaks earlier. Is there a better leak detector?

    Kegging for Dummies

I was just gifted a brand new 3 gallon ball-lock cornie keg kit as a wedding gift from a very generous fellow homebrewer. I hadn't planned on getting into kegging for a while, but he has forced my hand :). I've read through some docs online and some of the stickies on here, but I don't think any...

    Salvaging Moldy Wine

Thank you to everyone who replied and I apologize for the very belated response. Things have been hectic lately. I ended up racking the 5 gallons of wine to a 5 gallon carboy. I didn't have my 5 gallon here when I racked it the first time into a 6.5 gallon carboy. This was my first batch of...

    Salvaging Moldy Wine

I'm about a month into my first wine kit. I've been homebrewing beer for about a year and a half with no infected batches so I'm quite confident in my sanitation. However, after racking this wine into a secondary and degassing it with a wine whip, I have mold. Lots of it. At least I'm 99%...

    SS Braid Efficiency

What kind of efficiencies are all you SS braid users getting? I have a round, 5-gallon cooler I use for 2.5 gallon batches. It looks like a standard 12 inch braid will be a little too big for my cooler. I imagine this will cause the end of the braid to bend or kink - will this affect efficiency?

    The Wal-Mart Challenge

This could end up being an incredibly newb question, but would a bucket from the paint department be safe for brewing? I used one from Home Depot once and when I went to rack the beer to a secondary it had a white skin on the surface. An actual skin. I didn't dump the beer (mostly out of...

    The Wal-Mart Challenge

Heh. With unmanned self checkouts and the exits guarded by 90 year old men in wheel chairs, I'm not sure if you can call that a challenge..... .... but yes. This is the wrong thread. ;)

    The Wal-Mart Challenge

I was not aware of the GaP Challenge. The (currently) 17 pages of posts should definitely give me a leg up on my competition. I haven't finished going through the thread yet, but it looks like my friend's challenge is slightly different. He specified a big box retailer such as Wal-Mart (we...

    The Wal-Mart Challenge

Over a few homebrews, one of my fellow brewers propositioned me with the Wal-Mart Challenge. If anything, it has got me thinking, so I thought I would share it with the community. The idea behind the Wal-Mart Challenge is to pick a big box retailer, such as Wal-Mart, Target, CostCo, etc., and...

    Gelatin in the Bottle

I bottled my first batch of mead last night. It had been sitting in the secondary for over 4 months and was still pretty hazy. I would have kept it in the secondary longer, but I'm moving soon and I would rather move bottles than a full carboy. To speed up clarification, I threw in a little bit...

    Plastic Tube Safety

I just started doing partial mashes, following Chris Colby's countertop method []Brew Your Own (BYO), the How-To Homebrew Beer Magazine. Didn't think of hot-side aeration on my first batch so I just let it fly out of the spigot into the kettle. This time I want to do things a little more...

First timer - looking to do 2.5 gallon batches

Err... I may have misspoke. I reduce the steeping grains to about 75% of what they were. So if the recipe calls for 1# of crystal malt, I use 0.75#. Hops go the same way. An ounce of Cascade can be reduced to 0.75oz without ill effect. I've never been disappointed with doing that. But then...

    Altering Recipe Kits

I've used invert sugar in a chocolate stout before and it worked great as a gravity booster. It doesn't affect flavor very much and you can use a small amount to good effect. Lyle's Golden Syrup is a good example of this. Treacle, molasses, or honey can be used too, but these will have some...

First timer - looking to do 2.5 gallon batches

Smaller batches are great - especially if you live in a small apartment like I do. They allow you to use a smaller kettle on the stove and a smaller carboy. You will invest the same amount of time making a half batch as you do a full batch. Almost everything in a 5 gallon recipe can be cut in...

    Yeast's Influence on SG

Yeah it was an extract recipe. 9# of LME, about 2# of specialty grains, and 1# of lactose. Definitely designed to be a sweet stout. I planned on this being a big beer, but not *that* big. So I'm going to say you're right on the misread. Thanks
