Does krausen height have anything to do with healthy fermentation?

26 hours into fermentation and the highest my krausen got was 1.5 inches. For past brews, it was always about 3-5 inches high at this point. Using a big starter of Conan yeast at 66-68F. The airlock is bubbling steadily every second.

    Yeast Starter Process Help

I used Mrmalty's yeast pitch rate calculator to determine how much Gigayeast Vermont Ale yeast I would need for a 1.074 IPA. I hope this attenuates down to 1.012-ish. The calculator suggested 1.2 liters of starter with the 2 packs, dated 12/29/15. Each pack says it contains 200 billion cells...

Which fermentation schedule for an IIPA racked to secondary?

Choose one and explain why it's better. Using Conan Yeast... I know people will say a secondary rack is not necessary, but I'm doing it for this big beer, which has a 7 oz dryhop and a yeast starter w/2 vials. Fermentation Schedule 1: -64 F for 7 days. -Let rise to 68-70 F and add a...

Please help me to determine what is going wrong here, and which route to take. Goal: Brewing Heady Topper, a Double IPA with extremely high hardness - The target water profile illustrates Na & Cl to both be under 40 mg/L, virtually no magnesium, negative 114 Alkalinity, a starting water pH of...

    Water Profile Help (American IIPA)

I am attempting the Heady Topper IIPA clone which requires a very high, 750 ppm hardness, along with the use of gypsum, calcium chloride, and 85% lactic acid. The mash pH for this beer was suggested by the head brewer to be between 5.1 - 5.3. My starting water volume is 8 gallons. My...

    Malt choices for American IPAs

Anyone else turned off by rich, toasty, caramel, biscuity malts used in IPA grists? I'm at the point where you can give me 90-100% American 2-row and I will be satisfied. Rich Malt Flavor ≠ Fresh, Bright Hops

    Brainstorming a new IIPA recipe

How do you think this IIPA will turn out? I rarely dabble with Pils malt, German specialty malts, and non-American hops for IIPAs. I want something with a unique grist, but not overly malty or distracting. I'm a big fan of resiny, dank, marijuana type hops but without much residual sweetness...

    Found a Smartphone

I found a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, build 4.2.1 in pretty good condition located on the steps of my apartment complex. No one claimed it in the lost and found for 2 weeks, so I kept it under the assumption that it was previously owned by a visitor or a delivery man, and not a resident. The...

Rubbermaid 5-Gallon Water Cooler for $21.88

Is this a suitable mash tun for all-grain brewing? I'm mini-mashing an average of 6 lbs. of grain in my kettle now and looking to upgrade. It seems that this cooler will only be able to handle 12 lbs. of grain at 1.3 liters per lb. but at least it will hold my mash temperature better...

Fried Pecan Chicken & Bacon Cornbread Waffles w/Spicy Honey Mustard & Maple Syrup

This recipe is awesome and I wanted to share it with HBT. I tried my best to write it up, but I tend not to follow strict recipes when cooking. Basically, I took a classic and added an interesting spin to it. Hope you enjoy the idea! It would be great with a nice Marzen like Ayinger, which you...

    Reverse Osmosis systems are expensive

After some research, I have noticed that under-sink reverse osmosis systems cost $150-400 on average for regular home use. How much quality is being sacrificed by going with the cheaper options? Is the pressure tank included in this price? How often do filters need to be replaced? Is there...

Nail Polish Remover flavor in IPA. What is it?

Let me start off by saying that I have enjoyed my homebrewed IPAs very much. However, I have noticed something detracting when I taste them side-by-side with other commercial IPAs. That is, I can sense a nail polish remover type of flavor in my beers. I am attributing it to poor yeast...

    Hoppy Brown Ale Recipe Critique

I was browsing recipes online and was inspired to brew a hoppy brown ale that claims to have a balance of hop bitterness and malt sweetness. I would like it to have a wave of dank hop aroma and a rich, but not sweet, slightly roasty dark malt flavor. This will be a partial mash beer. Let me...
