Cooler mash tun & low OG

I am using a small three gallon cooler for some one gallon batches. It has been a lot of fun and a great way to beat the Texas heat. I've had some low starting gravity despite using beer smith for all calculations and believe it is probably a low mash temp. What do you guys use for...

Ebay temp controller issue -- help!

So...long story short. The digital ebay temp controller only works when the temperature is hot outdoors using a garage fridge. I had the temp set to 67 and all was good. A cold front came through and the ambient air temperature went to ~45 overnight and the temp control went to heat mode; the...

Is it possible to dry hop once already kegged?

I brewed a session pale ale recipe that was well regarded but a lot of people said it needs to be dry hopped. I didn't see this until I had carb'd it but the brew has almost no hop aroma or flavor. Can I drop a steeping bag in the keg for a couple of days to rectify this or would that be a...

    Oktoberfest lagering time

I want to do an Oktoberfest this year. Realistically I probably should have started about a month ago. How long do I need to lager the brew? Theoretically, if brewed this weekend, could it be ready by mid-October?

After a year of brewing AG I'm going back to partial mash

Anyone ever make this move? There are a few reasons- 1) Inconsistency with AG quality 2) Less waste with PM vs AG (spent grains) 3) South Texas heat (this is the real reason). I brewed Austin Homebrew's House IPA AG back in May and it turned out amazing. I'm going to give some...

    Fridge temp vs yeast temp

I built the infamous HBT "ebay aquarium temperature controller" and am going to brew this weekend using my garage fridge. The Cali ale yeast calls for 68-73 degrees for optimum temperature range. What should I set the temperature controller to accounting for wort temp versus air temp...

Wolves in sheep's clothing (non-craft breweries)

Can we start a master list of non-craft breweries posing as craft? Examples include: Third Shift/Coors, Shock Top/Bud, Goose Island/Bud, etc. What else is out there? Is alaskan brewing? Leinekeugels (sp?)? You post, I will edit :) Miller/coors: Blue Moon Third Shift Batch 19 Leinenkugel...

    First time with dry yeast

I am going to brew the centennial blonde from the recipe list here and have never used dry yeast. I have to ferment at room temp (77 degrees). Should I think about switching to a white labs yeast instead? Is there a link to a how to as far as pitching dry the yeast or do I just...

    Deep cleaning a keg

I recently got a free keg from a guy on craigslist that had some old stale beer in it for about a year. After cleaning it out and sanitizing it with star-san it still smells funky. What do you all recommend for a good deep cleaning agent that will take the funk out?

A free way to prevent running off too much sparge water

I've had a few batches where I've had low OG from too much water and am not good enough at eye balling it. I took an extra spoon, filled up my kettle gallon by gallon and marked it on the spoon. I then took my trusty old angle grinder and cut out a few notches... This should help prevent...

How many batches does your propane tank last?

I've got two five gallon batches under my belt. About five hours time on the tank. Is it time to refill?

    Brewing old grains

I have a stout all-grain kit that a buddy gave me last May (2012) before he moved. It has been sitting in its plastic bag in my pantry since I haven't had the equipment to do an all grain brew. I was thinking of brewing it but was wondering if them sitting in the plastic bag for too long...

12" false bottom in sanke keggle tun

Will this work? I have one laying around and would love to not have to buy more stuff to get my mash tun up and running. Any ideas? I know it was made for a cooler but I really don't want to go that route.

Force carbonation revealed leak in keg. What now?

I woke up and my keg was making a hissing sound. I have another keg I can transfer the brew too but it sat overnight around 30psi. I think my CO2 tank is losing pressure. Should I just move it over. Dang "refurbished" kegs :(

    Keggle dip tube

I have two feet of 1/2" diameter copper tubing and plan to buy a 3 piece ball valve. Does anyone know what compression fittings I'll need to get it all put together? Do you need to use teflon tape? Thanks!

    Keezer collar glue

I just wanted to ask you all what you think is the best glue? I have read people use construction caulk like liquid nails but I have also read about people building with silicon caulk and just letting it set. What do you all recommend from experience? Cheers, Steve

    Danby DAR044

Has anyone converted this fridge to a dual corny kegerator? http://www.walmart.com/ip/Danby-Designer-Compact-Refrigerator/5893621 Costco has the stainless version for $149 right now. It doesn't have a freezer so I'm thinking it will probably work.
