Tried lots of new stuff today!

I brewed a 10 gallon batch of Edwort's Haus Pale ale today. Used my new pasta mill to crush(worked great). Used the brew in a bag method with direct fire to my mash. Had just added a weldless thermometer and sight glass to my keggle. Everything went really smooth. I like the biab method. Only...

Edwort's Haus pale ale grain substitue

I milled my grain today for a 10 gallon batch of Ed's pale ale that I'm brewing on sunday. I bought a bunch of different grains the other day but I forgot to get vienna malt. I milled munich in it's place for the recipe. How will this affect the flavor profile of the beer?

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

I was using mine today to crush 21 lbs of malt and decided I had to rough the rollers up some more. When I was using the drill bit on it, the bit broke. The sharp, broken end of the bit roughed the rollers up much better than before it broke. The mill worked great! The rollers really pulled the...

    Dip tube

    Glad you got it fixed.

    Dip tube

That's the set up I have, but I threaded a brass coupler to the internal threads of the bulkhead and then used the compression fitting to attach the dip tube. Sorry I can't get a pic right now. I really don't think it matters how it is attached as long as it is air tight. As soon as the fluid...

    Dip tube

I've got teflon tape on all my connections on the outside of the brewpot. My dip tube and elbow is soldered. I've got a compression fitting where the dip tube hooks up to the inside of my weldless bulkhead. I would try a few gallons more to get it started. With a small volume of liquid , I don't...

dmbnpj, did you get it to work?

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

I just tried mine out. I textured the rollers with the drill bit method. It worked really well. I had a couple of grains that bounced around some before being pulled through, but I was really happy with the results. The crush looked really good. I bought some bulk grains yesterday so now I can...

    Weight scales for AG.

the escali weighs in lbs/oz and kg/grams. I just did my first one gallon batch, trying out a new recipe, and it was great for weighing small amounts of hops. You can weigh up to 11 pounds or as little as 1 gram.

    Dip tube

I just made one for my keggle last weekend. It sounds like you have a leak, maybe where your dip tube is connected to the inside of your valve. One other thing, when I tested mine, I put at least a full 5 gallons of water in and then started the drain. I don't know if more liquid starts the...

I always brew the same styles. Do I really need to ever buy more yeast? or...

There's a brewstrong podcast about repitching yeast that has a lot of good info.

    EUREKA! I'm totally stoked!!!!

Go to Mrmalty.com to read about pitching rates. He recommends that you generally do a starter with liquid yeast strains to increase cell count and health. For dry yeast, a 10 or 11 gram pack is usually enough for most beers.

    Dead mouse in carboy

I had a dead mouse in my carboy a couple of years ago. Clean, bleach, rinse, no problems. The first batch after that did have me kind of nervous, but I'm still here and all the beer has been good. P.S. My mouse was still pretty much intact and had kind of started to turn to jello!

    EUREKA! I'm totally stoked!!!!

Congrats on the brew! Dark beers help hide off flavors but it sounds like your improvements to your system are helping with the quality of your brews. The factors that HOOTER mentioned make a huge difference on quality. Now that I've gotten control of ferment temp, yeast pitching rates and good...

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

You guy's are brilliant! I can not afford a mill right now and I'm really stoked about this. I saw some knurled handles on some dumbells at a sporting goods store and was gonna try to make one out of them, but I really liked the ideas on this thread and really appreciate everyone's efforts to...

    Hydrometer optional?

At first I thought I didn't need to use mine. I just gave my beers plenty of time in primary. I've never had a bottle bomb or gusher. But when I learned what gravity readings were actually telling me about my beer and it's progress, I started using it every time. I check my gravity for all grain...

    soldering question

I soldered everything yesterday. After the first joint I kinda got the hang of it. It isn't beautiful but everything works great.

    soldering question

Thanks for all the help, I will solder everything this weekend.

    soldering question

I'm not actually going to be doing anything to the stainless, just need to solder the copper that will be immersed in the keggle. So basically, is the solder I have going to be food safe in a boiling pot of wort?

    soldering question

I found an old thread that talked about using solder that was like 95% silver for use on a keggle. I want to solder a copper dip tube and immersion chiller. The solder I have is Oatley safe flo silver lead free. Hazardous ingredients listed are bismuth, copper, silver, tin. Is this safe to use...
