    Aerate before secondary

    Sounds ominous...

    Aerate before secondary

Thanks for the great info. This leaves me with the question of "what the champagne yeast is for?"

    Aerate before secondary

The "instructions" indicate that after the initial fermentation, the wort should transfered to a second vessel at which point the champagne yeast is added. My understanding of yeast and fermentation is that it is an aerobic process yet the "instructions" did not say to aerate. I am still seeing...

    Aerate before secondary

Hi, I am brewing Midwest's Bigfoot's Barleywine and just pitched to secondary with the champagne yeast. Should I have aerated before transfering to the secondary vessel? It's been three days and I have not seen any yeats action. Thanks for any advice!

    What are you drinking now?

    An old faithful Summit EPA.

How much beer do you drink daily?

I usually average about 3 to 6 each day. I enjoy the hoppy malty flavors and it's a great relaxor for a stressful day.

    To condition or not?

Very good point - one (as a noob) I hadn't considered. Thank you.

    To condition or not?

In the same spot as you. First brew and now it's time to go secondary or wait it out in primary vessel. I see the benefit to go with a secondary in that it 1. frees up your primary, and 2. Clarifies the brew. Negatives would be additional aeration and contamination. For my first batch, I...

Great post! I too just bought Midwest's Irish Red Ale but haven't yet begun. Timely info, Cheers!

    Temperature sticker and other ponderances

Thank you for the rapid responses! I know they probably sounded pretty obvious.

    Temperature sticker and other ponderances

A few questions from the nOOb: 1. Whats the thermometer sticker for that came with the equipment? Where does it go (plastic bucket or carboy)? Horizontal or vertical? 2. My kit says to take an OG reading but doesn't say anything beyond that. What do I need that for? I think I should be...

    Anxiety

Thank you, thank you all. Perhaps a bit of perspective is in order, I agree. Home brewing looks like a lot of fun and the rewards, I expect, are truely gratifying. I will take all your recommendations to heart and sally forth. My first kit is an off season Irish Red Ale. I will post how it...

    Anxiety

Hi, first post. Have any other newbies bought a brew kit and then felt overwelmed by the process? That's kinda where I am at right now. The fear of the unknown is a bit daunting and I am worried about making my first brew. My "fear" is that I will get started, the kettle will boil over or I...
