    WTF? Rosin in a beer?

A friend found a beer recipe that his dad had from perhaps the 70's or before. Im tempted to try and make a small batch of it just to try (I'm sure it will be unique to say the least). However it doesnt have any hops in it and i believe it uses rosin as a substitute. Im assuming it is talking...

Figuring out hop amout of diffent strengths

I have been "winging it" with my hop calculations. What is the formula for figure out the correct amount of hops of a different strength? For example: recipe calls for 1oz of 5% aa hops and I bought hops at 6%. How much do I need? I know I learned this in high school but damn if I can remember...

    dry hopping BierMuncher's Centennial Blonde?

Just wondering if anyone has done it? I have 2, 1/5oz bags of hops left over at the end and it seems a waste to let them go. anyone done it and with what? I'm going to be making some for our next "staff meeting" at the bosses lake house, and thought it would be tasty.

    Bad Zymurgy, bad!

So I just discovered why reading Zymurgy when you brew is a bad thing. I was waiting for my boil to finish and I was reading about the toasted hops beer and I noticed something. This is an APA in here, I’m making an APA. This is a very similar to the recipe that I’m using too. I have a lot of...

    Oaking my cider help

So it’s getting that time of year here when I need to make cider and lots of it. I want to try some new techniques this year. After listing to the cider podcast (the sober one) on the Jamil show I want to try lagering my cider this year with red star montrachet yeast. I also want to try oaking...

I knew I kept her around for a reason

So yester day I’m limping around the house nursing some very sore legs and arm. (I was hit by a car, nothing broken, but very sore.) I’m half complaining about how it’s a pain to go down the stairs to get a beer in the basement. Instead of saying something along the lines of “well you don’t have...

    Any one brew the Tafelbier?

I was thinking about making this and was just wondering if any one has made it and how it turned out. Sounds like a good lawnmower beer with a Belgian twist.

Help with Ideas for a chocolate stout

So I need a little help with a chocolate stout that I want to make. I want it to be bigger, higher ABV stout. Not very sweet and that can do well with some good long aging. Any ideas for a good recipe? The chocolate is something that I think I could just add to a good stout. Thanks.

    Hops and chickens

Just wondering if anyone knows if hops are toxic to chickens like they are to dogs? I’m planning on growing some and just wanted to know if I’m going to have to keep them away from the plants. (aside from avoiding the general eating destruction.)

Racking and Dry hoping too soon?

So I’m making a SNPA clone I got off of BYO. It says to rack and dry hop at 3 days. This just seems way too early to me to rack a beer. I’m thinking that I will just toss them in then and let it sit for 2-3 weeks with the hops in. Any thoughts on this?

I have some Belgian yeast left over from my last batch and I need some help thinking of something to make with it. I want something that would be light enough in flavor to showcase the yeast flavor. (This is so I can get a better idea of it.) Also I would like to make something that will not...

    Brewing in the rain

I was supposed to go to the last autocross race of the clubs season. However its pouring rain out, and my car sucks in the rain. So I’m making beer instead. Not having any covered out door areas makes this much harder. But in the spirit of home brewing creativeness and making do, I pulled the...

    DME in a cider?

I was just thinking about my next batches of cider and i was wondering if anyone has used DME instead of sugar. The thought to this was that the DME would replace the sugar for extra fermentables and would add nutrients for the yeast. But I was not sure if it would effect the flavor much. Any...

    Naturally fermented cider

Just wondering if anyone has tried this. And if they did how did it turn out? I’m going to give it a go this fall just for fun. My plan is to get the cider fresh out of the mill/orchard and go with the natural yeast in the air there.

Strawberry blond is a surprise hit

So I have taken a few bottles of a strawberry blond that I made to the last two parties that I have gone to. I only brought a few thinking that it was going to be more of a novelty beer. It has gone over so well. My friends wife (who doesn’t like beer very much) wants to pay me to make her a...
