    Slow bottle carbing stout

I did a Dragon's Milk stout clone - bottled in late February. 6-7 weeks later it still isn't fully carbed. There is basically no head when poured though there is some carb in the beer at this point. My question is - I bought and milled the grains several weeks before we got around to brewing...

    Turkey frying??

I've never done one before, but I have a 21 lb i'd like to fry on Monday morning. It seems most fry kettles from Academy are 7.5 gallons and hold birds up to 18 pounds. I don't have one of those so I was planning to use my 10 gallon stainless steel brew kettle on a propane fryer base and I...

    Recovery from failed pitch?

I brewed a Golden Ale on Sunday and direct pitched it with a seasonal WYeast 3739 that I had picked up last Summer and kept in the fridge since. No activity whatsoever at 65 degrees house temp. I can't get any more 3739 so my plan is to either repitch it with Dual 1214's tonight, or buy...

    How to clean rubber tubing?

I've never had a problem when washing it right after transfer, but I used my only tube for an airlock and after a few days the crud was hardened on the inside. Do you just throw away your tubing after airlocking with it? Or is there a way to clean?

what will plastic do to my beer?

I just melted off a tiny bit of the end of a plastic (fake wooden) spoon in my boil. What will that do to my beer?

    Cost cutting

What are some ways for the all-grain brewer to cut his costs on each batch? Right now I get everything from the LHBS. Sometimes I use dry yeast instead of activated, but what are some other ideas that actually save money?

    water measurement?

I get my brew water out of the fridge - it has a measurement setting on the door, so I set it for 4 cups (1 qt) and load up my pyrex quart measurement jar, dump it, and repeat. Only problem is that the pyrex jar shows I'm filling 1/4 to 1/2 cup too much. Which should I trust, the pyrex or...

    Summer brewing/short fermentation

I've read a couple places that its best to limit your time in the fermentor during the summer because of the challenge with keeping it under 75 degrees. 12-14 days was recommended. I did a double IPA 12 days ago, racked to carboy about 5 days ago, and have kept the house at 74 or below since...

    How to dry hop???

I'm making a double IPA that calls for dry hops after 1 week. Its been in the primary a week and I plan to rack to carboy, probably tonight and add the dry hops. Do I just put them in the hop bag, drop in the carboy, then rack the wort? Or sanitize the bag first somehow? They LHBS guy...

How do you clean a stove after boil over?

My wife says she has been scrubbing all day. Must be using the wrong chemical or something. What is the fastest method?

Got my first infection - why?

I did my first all grain and probably my 7th or 8th batch overall about 3 months ago - it was a cream ale. I kept it for several weeks in the ale pail, then 2 more in the better bottle carboy. It came out really clear, just tastes sour. The LHBS guy tasted it and confirmed it was infected. So...

Can I bottle carb at 60?

I know that isn't the ideal temp, but will it totally stop the carbing process? I've had my bottles on the floor of the pantry (where I always carb them) since before Christmas and opened one last night and there was still no head. Checked the temp on the floor and the air temp was 60...

    Flat oatmeal stout

I brewed a Sam Smith oatmeal clone, only I accidentally mixed the wheat/barley DME (that was supposed to be my priming sugar) into the boil. So I got an OG about 1 point higher than expected. I then used about 5 to 8oz (can't remember) of regular DME mixed in a cup of boiling water as my...

    Ready to go All-grain?

I'm wanting to go all-grain soon but would/will be doing it with a minimum of equipment - I don't have the budget to go out and buy any more beer equipment right now. That said, I have about a 5-6 gal boil kettle, I just made a 5 gal cheap and easy mash tun. I have a huge boil burner on my...

    85% partial mash efficiency???

So I just built the Rubbermaid cooler conversion MLT kit and brewed a partial mash of Fat Tire Amber Ale. 6 lbs grain, 1.6 gal water in the mash tun, of which 1 gallon drained off. Then I used about 2 more gallons to sparge. Eventually I ended up with 3.3 gal of pre-boil zwort, and a temp...

How to take a hot gravity reading?

I'm trying to take a gravity reading from the mash right out of the mash tun to check my mash efficiency using an efficiency calculator. Trouble is, after I mixed all the mashed wort together in a brewpot and pulled out 1/2 gal in a pitcher to drop my hydrometer into, the mash was over 150 F...

how soon must I use my grains before they degrade?

I read somewhere that you don't want to store specialty or base malts/grains after they have been run thru the grinder for more than a couple of days. Why is that, and how soon before brewing is too long to buy a mini-mash kit from the LHBS?

Sam Adams Imperial Double Bock clone?

I'm looking for a good Sam Adams Imperial Double Bock recipe in a mini-mash format. I've found one for Mr Beer sized kit but I need a 5 gal recipe. I also need good boil, hop, and fermentation directions and times/temps. Thanks

How to maintain low temps for Lagers/Bocks without Fridge?

I don't have or have room for a beer fridge, nor do I have a cellar, but what other options are there for brewing bocks and lagers? I'd really like to do a Sam Adams imperial double bock, but I've only ever done ales and stouts. My thought is to use one of those fermentor brew belts with a...

How to minimize trub in secondary/bottles?

Last night I racked an oatmeal stout into my carboy. I use a clear plastic racking cane with a little black detachable tip on the end that is supposed to keep the cane off the bottom trub in the fermenter. I also had trub floating at the top when I finished. what is the best way to get as...
