New York Complete all grain brewing / kegging / kegerator setup (Syracuse, NY)

It's a sad day, but I'm getting out of brewing for the time being. Not enough time to brew as it is, and I have another baby on the way. $600 for all, would rather not split up. Here are the details: Kegging setup: 3 ball lock kegs, 1 5lb cyl, 1 20lb cyl. (5 is empty, 20 is almost full). Ball...

    Sevin dust on hops

Was having a problem with all my leaves being eaten, so I sprinkled some Sevin dust on my hops a couple weeks ago. Almost ready to pick (little brown stuff at the ends), but I can still see the Sevin dust on the leaves/etc. We really haven't had any rain since then, except this morning. Should I...

Second all grain batch, far better brew day

That's a good idea, I'll have to try that for next time. And I batch sparge. Will keep your ideas in mind. Thanks for the comments guys!

Second all grain batch, far better brew day

Haha, actually married, but I brewed while she was at work for the day. I'm very careful so as not to make a mess (makes for easier cleanup too). And she wouldn't mind me mashing indoors anyway, she used to be a waitress at a brewpub. I'll work on my efficiency, hopefully my next one goes better.

    Filling growlers?

Maybe I'll have to work on getting a fridge sooner than later then...

    Filling growlers?

Thanks for the info. Chilling the keg isn't really a possibility right now. I have a plate chiller, wondering if I can use that somehow. Would have to be jockey box style though, since keg is in basement.

Second all grain batch, far better brew day

So, my last AG brew day was kind of a disaster. Couldn't get the boil going, OG was way under, all sorts of issues. Today went far smoother. It's nice out (started lightly raining at end of boil last time, haha), so that helped. I may have had the air intake damper partially closed last time...

    Filling growlers?

I started kegging with my last batch. Unfortunately, I don't have a kegerator yet (gonna be a while before my wife lets me, haha). So, for now, I fill a growler to leave in the fridge. The first problem was with a sticky tap, due to going a week or two between using it. I solved that issue by...

First try with all grain, made a recipe. thoughts?

Interesting, I may try that. And good point. It does fall right into the style guide. It was a learning experience, as all first batches are, haha. As long as it's drinkable, life is ok.

    Very low OG

I didn't think to measure pre-boil gravity, will have to do that next time. It calls for an estimated pre-boil of 1.055. I mashed at 155 for 60 mins. Batch sparged. Took my liquid amount from beersmith. It called for boiling 7 gallons down to 6.5 (it says est. post-boil volume 6.5 galo, final...

First try with all grain, made a recipe. thoughts?

I took the reading after the beer had been cooled to pitching temp, so I don't think that was it.

    Very low OG

First all-grain batch. Details in this thread. Things seemed to go alright, until the boil. Not sure if it was because it was breezy, or because my kettle is too big and sits up about an extra 1-1.5" from the flame on my turkey fryer, or if that is underpowered, or something else (40qt aluminum...

First try with all grain, made a recipe. thoughts?

Ugh, crappy brew day. So, aside from my wort sitting in an ice bath for about 4 hours (basement flooding took precedence over beer making), my OG was way off target. My boil was pretty weak, and I ended up with 6 gallons post-boil. Estimated OG was 1.062, measured was 1.046. So, now what? I...

First try with all grain, made a recipe. thoughts?

Brewing it up today. Seems to be going well so far. Only problem has been my boil, turkey fryer is having a hard time getting the full volume to boil. It's boiling, but barely, haha. Windy and snow on the ground isn't helping matters, I'm sure. May make a foil insulation blankie for the pot for...

First try with all grain, made a recipe. thoughts?

You lucked out on the copper, though right now their site is showing 3/8" x 20' for $20.71, so still not too bad. And yeah, I've still got a week, so maybe I will just pony up the cash and not deal with the headaches. Congrats on your first AG batch, and thanks for the advice!
