    Fermentation Questions

This converter is really accurate... took several hydro readings AND FG refractometer readings and they agree on FG number :) http://www.northernbrewer.com/refractometer-calculator/#

Does cider "krausen" like homebrew beer?

Thanks... I really like the owner, and he's new to this type of business by his own admission. But, when he called this evening and asked me to make this, (no charge for the 'kit' or corn sugar) for the 1 yr anniversary gathering which is Sunday the 28th, I figured no way it would be ready or...

Does cider "krausen" like homebrew beer?

forgot to add, I've been homebrewing for just about 2 years, actually made 40 batches from April 6th 2012 till April 7th of this year. So, well over 50 batches of just about every kind of beer. Never, ever made cider before.. pretty much mixed up a juice concentrate, 3liters of boiling water...

Does cider "krausen" like homebrew beer?

Long story short, the owner of the local homebrew supply store asked me to make this asap for a party in 11 days. It is supposed to ferment for a minimum of 6 days if I keep the temp close to 80*F. Even then, if I bottle it, it will be only be carbing up for 5 days, so I'm not expecting...

Pulling bottles from your neighbor's recycle bin - thrifty or across the line?

Well... I'm not going to read through 14 pages of posts, but I live in Katy :cross: Are you trying to tell me something? LOL Can't be me cause I NEVER throw out non-thread cap style bottles, I'm a bottle whore.... if I bring 4 or 5 quarts to a gathering (that's primarily what I bottle in)...

Do I need to clean/sanitize my new equipment?

Yes, Starsan or Iodophor... both have their good & bad points, but it really comes down to personal preference I clean and sanitize my stuff after each brew session, then wash & sanitize again as each item is needed during my next brew day. Thing to remember is that EVERYTHING that comes...

    St Arnolds Devine reserve

Not to sound like a party poo-poo head, but I got into the hype last year for DR12. Bought a couple of six packs and 2 bombers... for something like $50. Wasn't that good, swore I'd never do it again. So, today, I went to spec's and bought a six pack of No Label Don Jalapeno Ale and life is...

Bottle my kolsch @ the 40*F it's sitting at?

First kolsch, nowhere near my first ag brew :D I'm ready to bottle and it's been sitting for weeks in 2ndary at 40-41*F. Do I bottle as usual (my all ale batches ferment in the mid 60's to 70*F)? My usual protocol is to boil my cup of water/5oz priming sugar, cool down to beer temp, stir...

Got 13oz of Amarillo pellet hops, what to brew?

Found the Amarillo for $2 per oz and I snatched up 13 of the 14 on the shelf. The GumballHead in the linked recipe will let me get "rid of" about 5 oz of my Amarillo...I'm not big into storing hops I think I'll take BigRedHopHead's suggestion and cut down the cara by half and add a 1/2lb of...

Got 13oz of Amarillo pellet hops, what to brew?

Thanks for these suggestions folks :) I JUST bottled 5 gallons of Amarillo Pale Ale 4 days ago, as it's rapidly become one of my favorites over the last year. The recipe is straight off of Midwest supplies' website and is really good imho. I wonder if I can double up on the hops to make it...

Got 13oz of Amarillo pellet hops, what to brew?

I put 3 packs in the fridge, the other 10 in the freezer yesterday. Anyone have an all grain recipe that calls for a lot of Amarillo hops? Thanks in advance. jestmaty

I thought I would be ready to bottle this weekend until...

YAY! Great answer! Hydro, hydro, hydro readings are the "proper" way to ensure when fermentation is done.

On the necessity of boiling starters

Oh cr*p! I bought one from our local homebrew supply store here in Katy about 3-4 months ago.... is Johnny Law coming to get me? Does my concealed handgun permit (which required an FBI background check as well as having my fingerprints run through a national database) buy me a pass? :drunk...

    My very first brew!

Nah... The bubbling IS the CO2 being released into the atmosphere. It's one way...CO2 gets out, no bacteria or airborne nasties get back in. Now, if the krausen gets so high that it clogs the airlock, you'll have to remove it, clean and sanitize it, and reinstall. Good job so far!

First all grain- sparge question- HELP

Awesome! Now... your question is hard to answer, it kinda depends on how much you get out of your mash (your system is different from everyone else's) I'd expect that you might get just over 2 gallons of wort out of your mash. General school of thought is that each lb of grain absorbs .1...
