    Cucumber in beer?

Interesting thread... I decided to brew a Pilsner with cucumber recently... The Pilsner recipe was fairly middle of the road although dry hopped with 50g/2oz riwaka hops cos I am a kiwi and I love riwaka hops in a pils! For the cucumbers I juiced 2 big telegraph ones that we get here in...

Never dump your beer!!! Patience IS a virtue!!! Time heals all things, even beer!

Not really a story about not dumping but more a corollary story about long term conditioning... Brewed an imperial stout and spice bombed it on purpose... Because I had planned not to seriously drink it for 12 months... Sure enough at 3 and 6 months it was awful... At 12 months I had people who...

some advice on a 2.5 vessel Herm's set up

BTW apologies as this is technically not a complete electric brewery - but I couldn't see where I could have posted in other forums as they don't really have any focus on HERMS and PID controllers from what I can see (apart from automation maybe).

some advice on a 2.5 vessel Herm's set up

Hey guys... I'm in the very initial stages of thinking about the next stage in my home brewery design and I need some advice. Firstly some back ground. For the last year or so I've been brewing all grain using a 46l square cooler as a mash tun and 50L kettle.(yes sorry metric brewer)...

    ABV measurement w fruit

I developed a simple calculator to work out the impact of fruit additions. If you calculate how much sugar you've added (either on the tin or generally you can get an estimate from an online source) then calculate the impact on gravity and then account for the additional gravity points in your...

    Infection strikes.... now what?

Forgive the newb questions here... I've been brewing for just under a year and on brew 35 I've finally had my first infection. I brewed a base porter beer and racked half into a 3 Gal carboy and topped up with a minimash of peat smoked / rauchmaltz beer which has turned out to be a stellar...

    Worst Homebrew Disaster

Bummer... I have my first batch fermenting now... think I'll opt for the backsweeten with lactose option for now... prefer not to be picking glass out of of my 14 month of twins if a bottle explodes in kitchen... and murphy's law being what it is...

    Worst Homebrew Disaster

^^^ Lol none of those so far... Anyways update: Less than 2L of beer gone and no permanent damage apart from the sediment reducer being busted. So cleaned up everything re-sanitised and its still happily fermenting away (temps crept up to 12-14 so will check in the morning to see how cold it...

    Worst Homebrew Disaster

Feeling your pain guys... just this morning I went to check on my first attempt at a lager. Its winter in NZ so I am fermenting in my plastic carboy inside a 200l food grade plastic container (which is wrapped in blankets and a duvet, and sitting on some foam pads to insulate it all) using the...

    Wheat "desert" beer

Hi All, Fairly noob brewer with about 20 brews under the belt over the past 8 months. I have a small scale home set up so predominantly brew 23L partial mashes although have some smaller 11.3L carboys I can do small scale all grain brews in. Anyhoo I am thinking about creating a big Pale...

    Partial Boil Questions

Thanks William & Union - appreciate the help. Style wise a Robust Porter (but a little smoky with the Rauchmalt). When i plug my basic ingredients into brew mate and assume 10% efficiency (to reflect steeping over mashing grains - but assuming a small amount of conversion from the Rauchmalt...

    Partial Boil Questions

LOL... OK some more background. whilst I am a noob (I have 6 kit'n'Kilo brews under the belt...) I have also done a lot of reading and I do know more or less how to bake a cake to borrow the analogy used... So recipe wise whilst I am not following a specific recipe I do understand the style I...

    Partial Boil Questions

Hey guys, I'm going to try making an extract based porter this weekend along with some steeped grains. Its not based on a specific recipe (so far my 6 brews have all been kit and kilo brews with some adjuncts or dry hopping to "tart" them up - and all have been drinkable) I'm still new and...

    Nelson sauvin hops schedule?

I am from NZ - I currently have a kit beer in the fermented that I boiled some DME and some Sauvin and Saaz hops to try to get more of an IPA. After the initial fermentation i dry hopped with some more... the smell when i took the lid off was AMAZING... lots of grapefruit but also some passion...

    Help on a Porter Recipe

Also thanks for the advice on the Light DME - I'm going to start to move away from kits and move into "purer" extract brewing so I will definitely keep that in mind for future brews

    Help on a Porter Recipe

Cheers for the help guys... I think I will try mashing the Rauchmalt to stop it contributing too much starch into the wort (and lets face it some additional fermentables ain't a bad thing), but might cut it down to 250gm. My brews are 23 Litres (i think about 6 US Gallons at a guess)...

    Help on a Porter Recipe

Hi Guys... 1st post! I'm planning my next brew which is going to be something of a porter style. I'm going to use a Bock kit, along with a tin of Dark Extract (1.7kg and 1.5Kg respectively). I also have half a kilo of dark spray malt to up the gravity if needed (shooting for about 1.055 -...
