    S'mores Milk Stout

I don't get on here often but I just saw this and was curious if the Apex products worked for you. Looking at the recipe, I'd change a few things. I never use dark extract because if you ever go to all-grain and want to convert a good extract recipe it makes it very difficult. I'd use light...

    Grainfather!!

elgee, I hold the filter cap on with a stainless steel hose clamp. I've been told a stainless hitch pin works well also. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IZFR73U/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

    Dough Balls & Mashing

John Palmer has good advice about a lot of things, but not everything. I add my grain to my water, not vice versa. I've NEVER had dough balls. I have the hot water in the mash tun and add the grain slowly, stirring between additions. Mix thoroughly before adding more grain and don't add too much...

The Why and How of Entering Homebrew Competitions

I've found that to be true in smaller competitions that don't really have good judges. Enter the competitions with certified judges and you normally get more written comments. Try the National Homebrew Competition if you realistic feedback.

    What are you drinking now?

La Trappe Trappist Quadrupel. Man, that's good beer! The wife brought it home for me with a bunch of other good beers. I just put my Belgian in the keezer to cold crash, so I thought it appropriate to drink one.

    What are you drinking now?

Double IPA, a Pliney the Elder clone. Never had a real Pliney, but this is an awesome IPA. 8% ABV. Prost!

My Imperial Stout. I haven't figured out how to load pictures here, so that's not happening. It's 13.5% ABV, nice head and legs. Tastes awesome. Prost!

That happens sometimes, Pyg. I'm currently drinking a Pliney the Elder HB that tastes pretty awesome. I'm happy. :mug:

    What are you drinking now?

Water and coffee to start the morning. Had a few of my Doppelbocks last night when I was at the mother in law's house for Christmas Eve dinner. It's my first lager and turned out very nice. My second lager is a Baltic Porter I'm trying to save for a local competition in February. Merry Christmas...

    Left over hops

I've been doing this with hop bags for a long time, also. I also seal dry malt extract bags after I take part out for a yeast starter or original gravity boost. It makes sense to me. Cheers!

Not Your Fathers IPA: Brewing IPAs Reminiscent of Todays Greats

@ mOOps-great article, I totally agree with keg hop additions. I've left them in until the keg empties and have never had grassy or vegetal flavors, either. I'd love a great session IPA recipe. It seems like most of my best beers are higher alcohol for some reason. Thanks.

    Blichmann Top Tier Burner Review

I've had the Blichmann burner for quite a while now and I love it. It is much quieter and faster and easier to adjust and control than my old bayou burner. I kept the bayou burner to take to parties and camping, though, in case somebody decides to walk off with it when I'm not around. No big...

    What are you drinking now?

Drinking an Awesome Red Ale while kegging a strong cider.:D The red tastes similar to Troegs' Nugget Nectar, but I and most who try it think it's better. It's 7.1% ABV with 10.8 ounces of hops in it. 4 ounces are in the keg. It will be empty soon.:(

    Adventures at Beer Camp!

You're a lucky guy. I hope I can attend Beer Camp some day. Sierra Nevada is an inspiration to all homebrewers and I love their commitment to being green and brewing and delivering great great, fresh beer. Awesome write-up!

    I got some new balls.

I always weight the bag when I dry or keg hop. I've done both in the past without weight, and I believe I get a lot more from the hops, and quicker, when they are more submerged than floating on top. I use shot or drinking glasses for weight. They are easy to sanitize and will fit through the...

Craft The Perfect Draft Beer Gun Anyone?

I use a counter pressure bottle filler. I had problems with foaming until a friend and brewer told me to use at least a 10 foot liquid line. He uses a beer gun and cut his liquid line shorter than 10 feet at first and also had foaming problems. That is the answer for a beer gun or a counter...

    What are you drinking now?

The wife is grilling steaks and mushrooms now. I'm drinking the end of my keg of Blueberry Pail Ale. I bottled a little over a case and entered the Samuel Adam's Longshot competition with it.
