    2nd batch Experiment during fermentation

Trying something new. I've got a Red Ale that is nearly done in fermentation. I call it Red inBed V2. Too hoppy (38 IBU) based on Red in Bed V1 So... I'm going to add this second batch to the fermenter today. 1gallon water total (it'll boil off some, yes) Grain bill 1 lb 2 row 2 oz smoked...

Blow-off tube vs. appropriately sized fermenter

Probably best not to do this... We have lab type equipment.. I forget most do not have this type of setup. Must be a closed clean system to do this cleanly. Never mind... Blow it off and throw it out. you'll only blow off about a beer or two.

    Spike with.... Anybody?

Sorry 1g is 1 gram. My scale is fine enough so that this works for me.. Just scale it up to the accuracy of your scale 30grams is roughly a shot glass add 1 gram of rum is roughly 5 drops The math is: (abv)A*(amount)A + (abv)B*(amount)B = (abv)mixture*(amount)mixture So an example might be a...

Blow-off tube vs. appropriately sized fermenter

After we had a blow up in the Fermentation laboratory (AKA Bathroom) we have used a blow off and aux containment vessel on everything. And with proper cleanliness just pour it back in when it is done. nearly zero loss. Good engineers minimize loss ;)

    Spike with.... Anybody?

I like the way you think :tank: Yup... I did a quick Kitchen Lab test and added 30g of HB Brown and then made 3 samples adding in 1g , 2g and 4g of spiced Oakheart Rum... 1g makes a 6% abv beer... very subtle 2g makes a 8% abv beer... about right 4g makes a 10.5% abv beer... maybe too much for...

Do you prefer brewing existing recipes or building your own?

We have been brewing for almost 2 years now and we tend to take a collection of recipes in a style and compare them to one another as a starting point... and then tweak it to be our own... Same with most cooking recipes too.. Its just the way I roll ;)

That is a win! It actaully makes buying beer easier if I can justify empty bottles at a discount with good"free" beer in them . Cheers!

    Vanguard AKA SoCalHomeBrew....?

Yea... Crazy right. I bought a 12'er of Sam Adams Winter Variety PAck for $12.99 (that was on sale at the Groc Store)... But that is 12 bottles with BEER IN THEM! One might complain that they would have to go through the effort of drinking the beer and then rinsing, and washing the bottle. Sam...

    Vanguard AKA SoCalHomeBrew....?

I have been to the store with the wine store attached. I only have one datat point for costs. We bought empty bottle and they were ~$18 for 12... After we thought about this we decided to buy bottles with beer in them for less. Of course, we have the burden of drinking the beer ;) Vangaurd sold...
