Will this technique work to prevent boilovers?

http://lifehacker.com/5406192/use-a-spoon-to-prevent-milk-from-boiling-over The relevant section is: The quick and dirty fix for the problem is to put a long-handled spoon into the pot as it is heating. The spoon breaks the surface tension and the skim of milk fat and protein forming and...

Swamp Cooler: How cold is too cold?

Hey all, so I've rigged up a swamp cooler for the first time to ferment out a roggenbier. My recipe calls for a 62 degrees fermentation temp. My basement right now holds pretty steady at 72. For the setup I've got a bucket filled with water that reaches up around halfway up my 6 gallon...

    Sub for Roasted Barley 300L

Hi folks, I'm brewing an irish red, and the recipe calls for 6oz of roasted barley 300L. My LHBS only has 500L, and they suggested using the 500L and taking 3/5 of what the recipe calls for (approx. 3.6oz). What are your thoughts/suggestions on the effect of this substitution on my beer?

    Drip... Drip... Drip... Leaky faucet!

The faucet on my keg tower drips very slowly. This is my first batch to be kegged and my whole setup is dry and tight as far as I can tell. I've been running a weak water/starsan "simulation" for the past 4 days just to make sure I don't get any surprises when I transfer my hefe to the keg later...

    Granite Ware Stock Pot

Has anybody used this to brew with? It's pretty affordable, and comes in 34 quart and 50 quart sizes (that's 8.5 and 12.5 gallons, respectively). It doesn't seem to be the usual type of stockpot, though, which is why I'm posting about it. Can anyone think of any reason this product wouldn't be a...

    Leaky Coupler?

Hello all, I've tried searching for this and it hasn't really come up, so I figured I'd ask. I'm experiencing a leak where the coupler (Sankey) meets my keg (a 1/6 barrel keg of Ommegang's Hennepin Saison). I will re-emphasize that I don't have a soda keg, but rather a commercial 1/6 barrel...

Beer drinkers in MD... East Coast!!

Hi all, I'm a midwesterner out in Baltimore for a bit, and I'm wondering if anyone has a good beer review website on East Coast breweries? I'm close to two major liquor stores that carry a lot of stuff, and I'd like to try some beer that I haven't had before. Any suggestions?

    Kegerator for Christmas... which one?

Howdy all, I'm looking for some kind of consensus vote as to which kegerator (note that I'm interested only in those that are already converted) is best out there. Price range: $500-700, would prefer a dual tap as well. If you can't recommend a specific model, could you at least suggest one or...

    Some Kegerator Issues

Hi all, I'm having two issues, hopefully you guys have some creative solutions, because I've been searching around here and the internet and can't find anything. 1) I'm experiencing a leak at the point where my regulator screws onto the CO2 tank, can you all think of a solution to that issue...

    A Good Deal? (Craigslist find)

Hi, long time reader, first post here... I've just gotten into extract brewing, literally have been going for a month and a half now, and i saw this ad on craigslist and hoped some people had some feedback as to whether this was a good deal or not. Here's the ad: Serious 5 gallon, all grain...
