My yeast is dead! WLP500 starter not taking off.

Had one last year which did the same thing. I semi-freaked as I unwisely went ahead with the brew day and then had to make an emergency run down to get another yeast. I had to let the wort sit for 24 hours until that one took off to pitch. I was sure I was screwed (by me), but it began...

So what score in a contest would you consider disappointing?

As a final note to this discussion, my score sheets arrived yesterday. They were remarkably consistent. One judge was a national BJCP, the other non-BJCP/experienced. The former scored it 34, the latter 32. Aroma 9/10; Appearance 3/3; Flavor 13/12; Mouthfeel 4/2; Overall 5/5. Both commented...

Notice in the bio, paragraph five, a typo 'days' instead of states I think if it is fixable online. Don't wanna lose those anal voters :). And good luck, you would definitely be an asset.

So what score in a contest would you consider disappointing?

This has been an entertaining and informative thread and I appreciate all the honest opinions. Really didn't expect such an outpouring, but have enjoyed the discussions of serious, but civil opinions. Looking forward to the score sheets and just may have to play devil's advocate and enter it...

So what score in a contest would you consider disappointing?

You are correct. That judge was non certified, but 'experienced' (drinking beer I'd guess). The other score sheets were by a certified judge, the brewmaster of the brewery, and the last I can't recall at the moment. In any case all the sheets were scored in the mid to upper 40's. Guess I should...

So what score in a contest would you consider disappointing?

Well I certainly didn't indicate I enter contest after contest and get 40+. I have entered exactly three beers in my lifetime and received the below, and now a 33. I hope you didn't take it that I was upset with the 33. I was hoping for a 35-37, but the score I got seems ok. I just wanted to know...

So what score in a contest would you consider disappointing?

Thanks to all. Yooper, I think my score was too high in the contest I got a 42 in. I am sure if you were judging it would have deservedly been scored lower. It didn't even win its class, which tells you how high they were scoring that day. I haven't received the score sheets yet. I just got...

What gear are you getting with your tax return?

Since I retired I'll be lucky to come out with enough to buy an ounce of hops :(

So what score in a contest would you consider disappointing?

Just wondering. I usually enter only beers which I think are really good and have sent in only three in over 10 years, but sent in one I really was a little iffy on this time. My previous low was a 42 and this Scottish Strong Ale (9E) garnered a 33. Since I obviously don't do a lot of them I...

    Coming attractions

OK thanks, I looked there but the pickings were pretty slim. Surely there are some coming up in the next month ot two? Guess I'll weed through Google and the long list of competitions almost all of which are long since over.

Don't we have a list of upcoming home brew competitions and entry info around here somewhere? Thought so, can't find it. TIA.

Scotch whiskey as an addition instead of bourbon?

I did in fact do the above. Now it may not have the name of some single malts, but the Double Black is the smokiest Scotch I have tried. I soaked the chips (four ounces chips, seven ounces whisky) for two weeks (in the freezer for 12 hours, out for 12) and added it to a pretty middle of the road...

.05 Blood Alcohol Limit for Driving?

I think the issue is largely political. When someone registers .008 they are not a danger to themselves or anyone else. The guy driving down the wrong side of an interstate who hits a. family of 6 returning from vacation is not .008. People in an accident at the lower level are people who had a...

Amount of priming sugar to add to prime at room temp

I am about to prime a keg of old ale and then store in my basement for a couple of months (2-4) before hooking up to gas ans serving. At the moment I have a small kegerator and have not the space to store under refrigeration. It should maintain a temp of about 62-65F over that time. I learned I...

    natural carbing in keg?

I have an old ale that I want to naturally carb in the keg. Most of my kegs do not seal unless I add pressure to them. How does one naturally carbonate if the keg is not completely sealed? Do you add a little pressure and then bleed it off after a day or so? Or?
