How do I test my water?

Check out this thread on Ward water testing. It's a mail in service on the internet. I used it, was very satisfied, and had my analysis in less than a week. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f128/how-send-water-ward-labs-test-129581/

    Stainless March Pump Cleaning

I would be surprised if a PBW soak or two didn't do the trick.

    I just broke a hydrometer...

Yeah, in a pinch the case (plastic tube) will work, but they kind of leak. I tried it cause I broke my test jar when I broke the hydrometer... they both fell off the table together.

Let me run this by you guys.

I think you will be fine. The lid in those things is not insulated, so that is where most of your heat is lost. I used to put a few towels folded up on top of mine and it worked pretty good to keep that extra heat in. Another idea is to drill a small hole in the lid and fill it with expanding...

    Chance of infection

I've done that before too, with vodka, starsan, and tapwater. It's caused by the beer cooling down and causing a suction. The first time I used my fermentation refrigerator I hooked up a blowoff tube and put that in a gallon jug quarter full of starsan. I put the carboy in at 68 or so and...

    Sierra Nevada Clone(Slightly Altered)

Oh yeah, 150-152 is fine for a beer like this, and a 60 min mash with a 60 min boil are also just right. Don't worry, it should be a good PA. It's just that "clone" thing can be a bit misleading sometimes. Let us know how it comes out. :mug:

    Preparing For AG Brewing

I see Yooper posted while I was writing... Her advise is spot on. Sorry for the initial misunderstanding:(.

    Preparing For AG Brewing

No, no, no... Mash at the appropriate temp (150-155), but sparge at 170, (THE SPARGE WATER SHOULD BE 170). The higher sparge temp will stop conversion and thin out the wort making it a little easier to rinse out. Think of it like this, warm honey pours faster than cold honey. The software...

    Sierra Nevada Clone(Slightly Altered)

That Recipe is from "Clone Brews". I've brewed that one before and was disappointed. Can't say I was surprised cause I didn't think it looked right anyway... For this beer, or any similar Pale Ale, with so much 2-Row the step mash is quite unnecessary. As far as the changes, Amarillo is not...

    Preparing For AG Brewing

1.) Do I need to do a yeast starter on this? I would rather not have to but your thoughts? Absolutely. Especially with that high an O.G. Check out Jamil's thoughts on starters, http://www.mrmalty.com/pitching.php It's not that big a deal, but makes a big difference. 2.) What other yeast...

    Kent Golding Question

Last year I planted three rhizomes in planters in my back yard, one Cascade, one Centennial, and one Golding. The Centennial died. The Cascade took of like a weed and I actually got about 3 oz. of dried cones from it first year. The Golding grew at half that intensity and produced no cones at...

    Double batch sparge question?

Bobby knows his stuff... also has a lot of helpful videos on youtube.

    Double batch sparge question?

Just a thought... Why don't you just go ahead and fly sparge since you're going to the trouble to recirculate? After recirculating your mash, connect your HLT to the pump and let the MLT drain to the kettle. You can pump the entire contents of the HLT nice and slow over the grain bed. That...

    Source of common infections

You're right in that "most" infections occur before fermentation, because unfermented wort is perfect food for micro organisms. Fermented wort, beer, is less perfect but does contain unfermentable sugars that wild yeast, or bacteria can feast on. In other words, sanitation is paramount before...

    I just broke a hydrometer...

It went down the drain of my shop sink in the basement... I took the trap off looking for it but it was long gone. You guys have just about convinced me to break down and get a refractometer.

    Computing in the yeast starter

I heard that the starter gravity needed to match the wort gravity too, but after reading Jamil's thoughts, and others, it made better sense to go with low gravity. If you have the time read through the article I linked... it makes sense, promise. Not to say that your starter is ruined, just...

    secondary ?

At two weeks I think its safe to say she's done, sometimes they will bubble for a while after they are done as leftover CO2 comes out of solution, especially if it warms up. I'd feel fine racking that on over... its going to kick off again when it hits that blueberry sugar anyway. It will be...
