New Brewer -- What if I don't actually Lager my Lager?

How I lager: Do the boil, add hops, etc. as normal. Chill, rack it to my carboy, and put the carboy in a big plastic tub in the garage and fill the tub with cold water so my carboy is basically in a water bath. Next, I drop in a horse/livestock water trough heating element (like...

    Birch Syrup

Hi: A friend in Canada sent me a bottle of birch syrup (think: Maple syrup, only from birch trees.) I've done some playing around with maple syrup in beers before (made a porter that had maple syrup added at flame-out, and a maple wheat that wasn't quite what I hoped for) but never birch...

    Where are you at INDIANA

If there are any folks in/around Muncie who'd be willing to freeze and save spent grains then donate them, let me know. All ya gotta do is put the grains in a large ziplock type bag and throw 'em in the freezer. We're working on setting up a little idea where we'd use those spent grains...

    Two Tone Helles

Maybe it is the yeast... But this line where the colors split is about half way up a 6.5 gal carboy... I didn't use THAT much yeast. I van see the trub settled at the very bottom, and this ain't that.

    Two Tone Helles

Hi, gang. Me again. Brewed a batch of German Helles from a Brewers Best kit. Followed directions, and pitched yeast on Saturday (week ago.) Has been at a steady 72 degrees, dark corner of my den, since. Today, I notice that it appears to have separated into two layers. Darker on top...

    Where are you at INDIANA

Ahem.... And mine, too. :drunk: I'll have to get down there one of these days, taste a few, see what's what.

    summer shandy

Well, I tasted a bottle of this yesterday evening. First impression is that it isn't nearly as sweet as I was hoping for... There's a real lemon taste, but it's more tart than the sweetness I get from Leine's Summer Shandy. It has been in bottles for just about 18 days, and perhaps I just...

    Ring around the carboy

Seems that Oxyclean is the consensus. I'll give it a go. Thanks, everyone.

    Ring around the carboy

So, brewed a batch a couple weeks ago, and after four weeks in the carboy, my FG numbers stabilized and I bottled. There's a ring around the inside of the carboy where the beer was, and it's pretty dry and crusted. I soaked in water for a few hours (with a fair dose of liquid dish soap)...

    Blow off bucket

A question on Blow off bucket/bottles: Should the carboy and BOB be on the same level (i.e., both sitting on the floor?) or should they be at different levels (one elevated on, say, an overturned milk crate or plastic bucket?) Gracias.

    summer shandy

Well, I kinda made it up, taking the advice and input I found on various forums. The wheat base is a plain, run of the mill wheat beer. Nothing terribly special. I bottled it last Thursday, and a "sample" (by which I mean about a bottle or so, as I ran out of clean empties before I ran...

    summer shandy

Well, it's fermenting well, if the airlock is any indicator. It has been in primary since Saturday around noon, so almost 96 hours. Let you know in four weeks the final verdict. ;)

    summer shandy

Here's what I'm doing (right now, actually.... the boil is half way through): 6.6 # Wheat LME 1 # Pale 0.5 # Carapils 0.5# White Wheat 1 oz Tettnang hops (60 min) Zest of 1 lemon (at flame-out) Safale WB-06 I'm going to let that ferment for 2 weeks, maybe 3, then add 4 0.23 ounce...

    Where are you at INDIANA

For sure. I've got some Pale Ale that is bottled now, be ready in a couple weeks. Thinking a shandy clone next, as my wife loves the stuff. I work in Indy (for now), so would be happy to stop at GF on my way home. Would need a detailed list of what you want, and we'd have to agree on how...

    Where are you at INDIANA

Oh, and let's find a weekend, meet up and brew some beer. I've got space in my garage/drive, but you'll have to bring your own equipment.

    Where are you at INDIANA

I was pretty underwhelmed when I went there. The Brewer's Best kits are convenient, but the selection was.... limited. I guess that's a product of the market: Maybe most folks here don't want to try brewing a complex brew, and he stocks what sells (which, if that's the case, I can't blame him...

    Why Not Squeeze?

Did I mention I'm married? Squeezing my sack is all the excitement I get anymore. So, OK, this tannin thing. I get that it's a problem if steeping temps get too high, and no I can't squeeze hard enough to create those sorts of temps (g_d d_mn toothpick forearms) and so on. How would I know...

    Why Not Squeeze?

So, I do the BIAB technique, using commercial kits (related: If anyone in/around central Indiana wants to teach me all-grain brewing, I'd be more than happy to learn) and every one of them says that after steeping the grains in the mesh bag for XX minutes I should remove the bag, let it drip...

    Missing my OG numbers

Yes, sir, per the label on the hydrometer.

    Missing my OG numbers

Thanks, all, for the replies. I'll make sure to mix well before sampling, and I'll also to remember to RDWHAHB. :o
