Places to drink craft beer in Hartford, CT Needed

wherever he goes, have him look for Ten Penny (or Dirty Penny) on draft. Products of Old Burnside Brewing in east hartford, they are some of my favorite local products and are available in quite a few 'regular' restaurants and bars.

    Applying labels-best way?

That's two for elmers glue sticks. I use them all the time now. I guess milk would work just fine, but glue sticks seem like the least messy, driest option.

    Mew's Tavern

The Mews is definitely my local favorite. Was just there last weekend (whale tail ale and the warsteiner). Always an excellent beer selection which they keep changing so there are always new beers to try. Great food (The Rancho Relaxo pizza is A1). The wait time can get quite long for dinner...

Which brand comes in good bottles.

I've used all sorts of (brown) bottles and I think my favorites have become guinness. no labels come off easier, just a slice with the razer knife. pulling the widget with needle nose (or a hemostat/clamp) is not a problem at all. Good heavy glass with a distinctive shape The only...

    Newbie questions.

If it's a 'no boil' kit then you should be fine, though I've not used one myself. I'd suspect you have hopped extract so there's little need for a full boil.

How to Serve Home Brew Beer?

Someone once said ( I might have read it here originally) "You wouldn't drink wine out of the bottle would you?" Seems to make sense to me . Of course that doesn't stop me from drinking out from a bottle often enough. but on topic, I always bottle condition and find a good secondary...

    Mini-Fridge Fermentation Chiller Project

Very nice. I have an almost identical setup for my fermentation fridge. Pretty much same thing, free fridge, not quite big enough. Unlike your model, the insulated plywood box is actually the door itself. I built it so the hinge pins for the original door could be used and added a couple...

Vodka in the airlock for beer?

I usually just use (sanitized) water in my airlocks, but I found that my modified mini fridge turned fermenter tends to freeze the water in the airlock (the airlock sits right in front of the coils) when fermenting at lager temps (or lagering). so now I use cheap liquor (usually vodka).

Tips on cooling down my basement?

Without AC all you can really do is open the windows at night and close them 1st thing in the morning. moving the air with fans could also be helpful, but again, you'd need to keep the area closed up during the day or the heat will cause you to lose any cooling gained at night (when the outside...

    Providence Pint Recommendations?

Track 84 is literally a stones throw from the airport (turn the corner at the Wendy's). and yes they have a great beer selection. I'd suggest a stop in for lunch, and picking up a sandwich at 'sandwich junction' next door (excellent sandwiches). You can carry it into '84' and get a pint (or 2)...

Beersmith: How to tell it to steep grains?

Yep, that's correct. 'Extract' assumes steeping of grains. Easily verified if you add a grain (or other ingredient) which requires mashing, the ingredient will be marked with an exclamation point (!) and note that it must be mashed. Change the recipe type to partial (or all grain) and the...

    My SWMBO's blonde moments

Not SWMBO, but she related this story about a road trip with her sister... SWMBO: Another Mile marker down, i think we're almost half way there now. Sister: Cool! How far is it between those mile markers anyway?

    Beer Madness

Just happened upon this (apparently annual) 'beer madness' poll in the Washington post web site. Seems rather silly to me (or at least uninformed) comparing (in some cases) completely dissimilar beers to each other. Mildly amusing though, and an occasional "Haven't tried that one yet...

Am I the only one annoyed by beer store clerks...

I am semi fortunate in this respect. My local beer store (which has a generous selection) also happens to have a well versed, intelligent beer 'steward' who knows every new arrival, what everything is, and knows how to handle a bottle conditioned beer. Of course, the employee in question is...

    Why is reefer called 420?

Might be referring to Dweezel..I'm pretty sure he was a toker at one time. Though traveling around playing his dad's music He probably gave it up just so he could concentrate.

beer still fermenting after 2 weeks

I've had this happen to me twice now. Fermented for far longer than I had expected, with the airlock bubbling every 20 - 30 seconds for 3 weeks. In the end both came out just fine, though both had a slightly more 'fruity' flavor than my beer normally produces. In my case the yeast...
