What book is on your nightstand? Readers!

Current reads: Reich, Saving Capitalism; Piketty, Capitalism in the Twenty-first Century; Hudson, Killing the Host. All interesting takes on latter day economics. Just finished: Hari, Chasing the Scream. Excellent history of the War on Drugs. I can also recommend Gabor, In the Realm of the...

    The [Horribly Unpopular] Soccer Thread

At least you don't have to endure the heart in mouth agony of set pieces with either Mignolet or Bogdan (LFC).

    grain storage containers

I also make wine from 23l pails of fresh juice. Rinsed and dried they do a great job and have a snap on lid with a rubber gasket. I consider them free.

    OBK (Ontario beer kegs) Brewpot

I have one of those pots and it is well made. One problem that I noticed is that mine developed a rust spot after I left oxyclean sit in it over night. Reckon that was an error on my part.

    My cider tastes like riesling!

Several years ago I made a batch of cider that also resembled nice Riesling, nothing fancy like an auselese, but a serviceable thirst quencher. My secret was using a blend of russet, orange pippin and Cortland apples. The russets added tannin, the pippins acid and the cortlands sweetness. I'm...

Just got a Festa Brew West Coast IPA kit today, has anyone tried it?

@ricshayne No you do not dry hop this beer. It is a finished wort that you add yeast to. Saying that, you don't live in Canada do you? The cheapest 12 oz bmc brew around here is about $2.00 a bottle. These beers compare to good European beers - the Czech Pilsner is a delight - and cost...

Just got a Festa Brew West Coast IPA kit today, has anyone tried it?

I am currently working my way through a batch, and am very impressed with the product. It helps to let it warm up a bit in the glass to fully develop its flavors. All in all a fine brew at a very reasonable price. BTW - my technique is 3 weeks ferment at 64F, bottling at low carb - about 2.9...

how to get gunk out of the bottom of a bottle

I regularly use flip tops, which are donated by my son-in-law after having sat in less than ideal conditions. I have found that a soak in oxyclean followed by a mild vinegar rinse and a session on the bottle sprayer at pressure takes care of all the issues, gunk and white spots.

Did I leave my Festa Brew too long in Primary?

There have been times when I have left my Festa brew in the primary for up to two months. No problems noticed. You should invest in a sealed bucket with airlock for more predictable results. Loose lids sink sips. Sorry.

    Canada Homebrew Supplies

Ontario Beer Kegs is well regarded. It is in Mitchell, Ontario in the middle of nowhere, but they do mail order. If I rightly recall, they have flat rate shipping across Canada. Expensive for me since I'm an hour away, but could be economical for you. Worth a look anyway. Prices are good, too.

does anyone have experience with festa brew

I agree the generic instructions are terrible. However, following the standard 3-4 weeks in fermenter plus 3 weeks to bottle condition works well. I would watch the sugar addition; I use dextrose, because some of these brews produce fountains. Use an online calculator to determine the...

    I Hate Wineries

No, no, no, no. You're doing it all wrong. For the true winery experience, you have to book a flight to Frankfurt and from there to the Wine Route in southern Germany. This trail has wineries about every 100 yards with their attendant vineyards. Do this in October when the neue wine is being...

    Grain Storage - Food-Safe Buckets

I store my grains in a 5 gallon plastic pail which I recycle from wine making. I get fresh juice for my wines and after transferring to my fermenter, rinse the pail thoroughly, recover and store until needed. Each pail holds half a bag of malt. No problems at all yet as the lids have a proper...

Is there a beer you buy just for the bottles?

Hacker Pschorr in Ontario, Canada are only available in 500ml swing tops. And they are available in both the LCBO and the Beer Store.

    Festa brew

I live in Ontario and it is much cheaper here. The IPA used to cost $35. Now with a price hike it's going to be $42 or so. Still cheaper than in the Maritimes. However, it is now going to be available year round. Because of the cold weather, I cannot cook outside and just had to buy a...
